The Agathiyar 12,000 (verse 331) mentions that the hills of Kallar is where Agathiyar and Supramaniar had meditated.
As such the Sri Agathiyar Gnana Peedham was set up at the present site under the directive of Agathiyar. Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal who had completed his pilgrimage of temples, caves and Siddha Samadhis and had done extensive austerities or tavam at these places, finally intended to go into samadhi. He was then instructed by Agathiyar to seek out a place known as Agathiyar Vanam to set up his ashram. Tavayogi with the approval of the local village head set up a simple structure with thatched roofs at the present site. Tavayogi was then instructed by Agathiyar to install a 6 Aathaara Peedham made of granite. Following this, development was brought to the surrounding area in the form of resettlement of the native Indians in their new homes, which provided an opportunity for Tavayogi to carry out his free feeding programs and other charities.
Meanwhile Agathiyar instructed Tavayogi to travel to Malaysia to bring awareness about the Siddhas. The Kallar Ashram grew in size and added on many facilities to accommodate the ever increasing droves of devotees from India, Malaysia and other countries making their way to pay homage to Agathiyar and the Siddhas at this tiny ashram perched on top of a small hillock .
Madam Sarojini who was introduced to Chitramuthu Adigal, Tavayogi's guru, by Tavayogi came to be a prominent speaker after receiving Chitramuthu Adigal's blessings and guidance. Both Tavayogi and Mataji teamed up and spoke in many forums or pattimandrams throughout India. Sarojini who frequented the Ashram regularly to help out, later was ordained a monk, Mataji Sarojini Ammaiyaar, and moved into the Ashram permanently.
Devotees contributed towards the installation of Agathiyar and Thava Murugan in fiber. Mataji was instructed by Agathiyar to bring back the miniature granite statue of Agathiyar she had had commissioned and placed at a Nadi centre earlier to Kallar Ashram. A Sadhu mysteriously appears at the ashram to deliver a magnificent Rudraksham to be installed and worshiped as a Shivalingam.
Tavayogi meanwhile carried out the Annual Jayanthi and Guru Puja celebrations without fail. The pinnacle of the 2 day festivities was the lighting of the Sarva Dosa Nivaarana Maha Yagam. What started with the lighting of 5 fire pits expanded to 108 pits on the instruction of Agathiyar. A trust was then formed to oversee and manage the Ashram.
When the present ashram outgrew in size and facilities, there was an urgent need to move out of the present premises for one that was more conducive. Along comes a good Samaritan who purchased a 2 acre piece of land for building a new ashram.
The Sri Agathiyar Gnana Peedham Trust is currently seeking donations from the public, towards building its new temple complex for Agathiyar and the 18 Siddhas, on this piece of land adjacent to the entrance to the Satchidananda Jothi Nikethan International School (SJN) on the Methupalaiyam - Ooty route, some 2 kilometers from the present Kallar Ashram.
The Sri Agathiyar Gnana Peedham Trust under the patronage of Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal had engaged Architects and Engineers to come up with conceptual and working drawings respectively. Preliminary works including earthwork, leveling and setting out has begun on the new site. This temple complex will have a meditation hall that would accommodate 100 person at an estimated cost of Rs 32 lakhs; a dining hall cum kitchen that would accommodate 300 people per sitting at an estimated costs of Rs 23.5 lakhs; and cottage accommodations for devotees and pilgrims at an estimated cost of Rs 30 lakhs besides having other facilities.
