THE MIRACLE OF WORSHIP

Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal came the first time to Malaysia in 2004. None of us knew him then. He followed a Nadi reader and found his way to a couple of temples to talk about the Siddhas before returning to Kallar after a brief stay. When he was back in 2005 to officiate the Agathiyar Gnana Peedham in Batu Caves, I called the office of the Peedham and asked to see him. We met there for the very first time. A wonderful guru disciple relationship blossomed.

He was back in 2007 to officiate the three day First Conference of Siddha Philosophy. He came again in 2008 and 2010.

Each time he took the stage he would say the same thing, repeating the basics of Siddha path. When he spoke at the annual guru puja held at his ashram he would repeat the same speech. Although I only attended the puja in 2016, I knew of the contents of his speech as I would receive a copy of it to edit and post it on my channel on YouTube.

One day while he was alone I asked him why he kept repeating the same thing. I was hungry for more new information. His talks were boring to me.

He turned to me and asked "Are you following what I say?" I knew he did not direct that question to me but those who purportedly were on the path and came around again and again, cooking up more and more questions for him to answer, but never took his advise seriously or put into practice what he taught. He knew I respected and followed every command of his and Agathiyar. Rather then question the guru for hours, I would prefer to listen and carry out his commands. That is how Agathiyar kept giving more commands since he saw that we carried out every single task he gave us. Through doing his work we came to learn many things. The guru then carries us to greater heights.

He continued that he could only move on if we followed the basics. Hence the reason for him to keep on churning the same old stuff year after year.

We could claim that he is our guru, but he has to take us as a disciple first. Tavayogi told me they would watch and monitor us 12 years before accepting us as a disciple. They will see if we follow their teachings and put them into practice; only then will they go on to reveal more. It is only when we follow the teachings or directives and work towards the goals, that we will see results. Seeing these results of our efforts, the guru comes out with another directive or practice for us to follow. This is how the disciple is given an assignment, tested on it and raised to the next level of practice.

Agathiyar asked me to come to the Siddha path, worship the Siddhas and other deities, light a lamp in the home, light more lamps in the temples, sit and worship with the family, recite the names of the Siddhas, offer flowers and food, pray for the well being of all, feed the hungry, donate towards good cause, help others, uphold noble thoughts and virtues, never harm another, and be compassionate to animals. Agathiyar and Tavayogi brought us to places of worship and on pilgrimages, asking to perform prayers in these places and carrying out remedies to remove karma that veils and blurs our vision. All these were the entry level of Sariyai. All these acts were meant to open the heart. It takes years of pursuing on the path of Sariyai before the heart softens and relents to further directives from them.

When the heart opens, we will see things that at one time in the past, although was right before our eyes, but we were blind to it. When the veil or curtain is drawn aside, we see the sufferings of others and begin to feel their pain. We will want to end their pain and sufferings. We go out to assist them individually or seek association with others to reach out to them. These involves a concerted effort and a relentless soul to keep pursuing on this path. By taking upon ourselves to end the misery of just one soul, we can make a change in another's life. The divine then lends a hand to accomplish our acts of charity. Pursuing the path of Sariyai, we live in the world of Shiva, doing service to all of his creation.

"Shivagnana Siddhiyar Supakkam" speaks about this. The first stage Sariyai (Taatamaargam) is that of living in the world of Shiva, serving him as a servant would. But sadly with our arrogant attitude, thinking that nature and Shiva is indebted to us, forgetting that we only survive because of both, with the veil of ignorance covering us, we fail to see the truth, living life as we desire giving in to our enormous appetite for wealth and pleasures.

The stage is now set for us to progress to the next rung of the ladder. Agathiyar brings us to sit in our homes to conduct and perform rituals and prayers by ourselves, later giving us the courage to perform them in public places. He brings us to Kriyai. If in pursuing the path of Sariyai, we served in Shiva's abode, in Kriyai, we invite by invoking Shiva to move into our homes and begin to serve him now. Kriyai (Sarputramaargam) is adopting the role of the son, inviting the deities into the home, offering flowers, offering incense, articles for ritual ablution of the idol, food offerings, worshiping, praising and eulogizing God with love, and performing rituals and and keeping alive the sacrificial fire. By performing worship of Shiva daily, thus the devotees abides close to Shiva both in thought and deed.

Once the heart opens, the divine begins to work on us. For this purpose he sends a guru to guide and mold us. But we have to take him and his work seriously, follow his talks, teachings, techniques and practices. He came as Tavayogi, Acharya Gurudasan, Master Uva and Master Arunan to teach us Yogasana and Pranayama. These made our body fit and an ideal vessel for better things to come our way.

"Shivagnana Siddhiyar Supakkam" clearly establishes this path. Yogam (Sagamaargam) is observing Ashtanga Yogam, taking control of the senses, regulating the breath, realizing the essence of the six adhara kundalini chakras and worshiping their presiding deities, ascending to Brahma Randhra and inducing the lotus bud to blossom, stimulating the sun mandala there and taking on the resulting ambrosia spread all through the body, worshiping and meditating on the effulgent Shiva, these devotees get the form of Shiva.

The final path, Gnanam (Sanmaargam), - taking in the wisdom from all the holy scriptures, the devotee merges with Shiva.

P. Thirugnanasambandhan in his "The Concept of Bhakti" published by the University of Madras, 1971, clearly leads us into these stages.
"The soul inspired by the highest goal of communion with God passes gradually from one stage of spiritual enlightenment to another. Starting from the first rung of the ladder, as the servant of God, the soul practices Carya, consisting in external duties such as cleaning and lighting God's temples, adorning the images of God with garlands, praising God and attending to the needs of devotees. For these deeds the soul is rewarded with Saloka or dwelling in the region of God."
"From being a servant, the soul in the Kriya stage becomes a son of God, and renders more intimate service than before, such as invoking God's presence, serving him with love and praise and other acts of service like Sivapuja, besides attending to the burning of incense, collecting flowers etc. the reward for service of this type is Samipya or dwelling near God."
"In the next stage of Yoga, the Sakha Marga the soul becomes the friend of God and thus is nearer God. Withdrawing its senses from the material objects, it concentrates on the contemplation of Siva. This is rewarded by Sarupya, which is to have the same form as Siva but not the essence."
"The soul has to progress further in the Jnana Marga to reach the final goal of Sayujya from where there is no return. Sayujya is a state of union of God and soul, a mysterious union of either, so that God and soul exist with their respective attributes, the former as the source of bliss and the latter as the recipient of the same."
And when does all these take place? Siddha Sugabramar in his "Gnana Suthiram" reveals when this happens.

When the Parama Guru arrives,
The path of Sariyai shall arise,
Slowly when the path of Sariyai is trod,
Kriyai path shall arise shortly,
Upon walking the path of Kriyai,
Son, the Yogam path will clearly arise,
Walking the path of Yogam,
The Jnanam path shall appear.

Tavayogi quotes Thirumular on when these happen to take place.

Both Thirumular and Tavayogi put it beautifully. Pursuing the practice of both Sariyai and Kriyai, and when the Divine showers his grace, he brings the devotee to the state of Yogam (Union). With the Gnana that is experienced as a result, together with the grace of the Guru, the Sittam becomes Shivam then. For all these to happen one needs to be a devotee or bhakta first. Tavayogi had mentioned to us that our efforts was two stages, then the divine comes to take us to the higher stages.

Tavayogi has established these four stages outwardly as structures that serve these purposes. His old ashram in the Kallar Hills very clearly depicts this although in his new ashram grounds it is not too obvious. Upon arriving at the old ashram one is greeted by the dining hall and its adjacent kitchen, where food is cooked and served to visitors to the ashram. Coming to Tavayogi's ashram, and having satisfied our thirst and hunger, we are taken to worship the Siddhas. In this hall the sacrificial fire is lit and rituals conducted. The visitor gets his first exposure to Siddha puja. Yoga lessons are carried out in another sector of the ashram at Kallar. Moving within further into the ashram we come to a place of quietude and serenity where is housed a granite structure, the Aaru Aadhara Peedham that depicts externally the the six adhara kundalini chakras, that is within. On its summit is lit a lamp.

Although we are not to seek the fruits of our efforts, we are rewarded without us asking. Shivavaakiyar reveals the rewards while treading the path.

Upon entering Sariyai, Salokyam shall one receive,
Through Kriyai, Saameepam shall he reach,
In Yoga, Saarupam shall be attained,
Jnanam, these four, Saayutchyam shall one attain.

Ramalinga Adigal sings of the fruit of his initial labour in moving towards Erai and the subsequent move by Erai to come down and within to lift him up to the state of an Adigal.

அடியனாக்கிப் பிள்ளையாக்கி நெயனாக்கியே
அடிகளாக்கிக் கொண்டாய் என்னை அவலம் நீக்கியே

From a servant who visits Erai's abode daily; to his child who now resides with the father; then as a companion who is always at his side; and finally an apostle of his; this was the transformation that takes place.

The eight fold path or stages of Patanjali's Astanga Yogam very closely follows the four Marga or path and stages of Sariyai, Kriyai, Yogam and Gnanam. P. Karthikayan clearly defines the stages that Patanjali speaks about and how each stage prepares one to move one to higher states.

Iyamam and Niyamam socially prepares a person to mingle with society and a new way of life. Aasanam and Pranayaamam physically prepares a person to make this body a temple for Erai to reside in. Prathyaagaaram and Thaaranai mentally prepares a person bringing him to enter new horizons, frontiers, realms and dimensions of perception. Dyaanam and Samaadhi spiritually prepares a person to be a receptacle to receive energy or Sakti, grace or Aasi, divinity or Arul, and finally the much awaited wisdom or Gnanam.

Meanwhile the soul registers all these subtle but obvious changes taking place within the body. The soul takes on the vision of Erai, dropping its personal and individual desires brought along with it. Compassion builds in us melting the heart. The spark from the Holy spirit that we carry in us gains luminescence. The eyes sparkle. The fire that was once a small flame in us burns to consume us. A strong aura builds around us. The breath that we took in small amounts expands to immense proportions. Prana flows abundantly. The spirit grows to an extent that it ruptures and reaches new heights of heightened bliss that results in loud laughter and tears of joy. The body trembles and perspires. Every cell vibrates with energy, joy and bliss. The body radiates an aura that is sensed by others. These bliss is passed on to those who are receptive enough. One begins to communicate with nature in very subtle ways. He feels inseparable from nature.

When bliss consumes him, it is time for him to go within to contain the energy and convert its outward expression into strengthening the spirit further. The spark now becomes the subject of contemplation. It grows in intensity further. It takes the nature of its source. He becomes divine. He becomes the divine.

When wisdom from the consciousness enters, more doors are opened up. Wisdom and knowledge rushes in. Everything is felt and known. Creation and its governance is known. From a stage where we are shown and taught, we rise to the stage where all is known and felt.

This is where we connect with the spirit. We begin to become a watcher. We can bring forth the soul and identify the body as separate. If joy and happiness arises due to rewards in the material world, bliss arises from connecting momentarily, initially, with the spirit of the source. Tavayogi tells us the trick is to prolong these moments. Bliss touches the soul. The soul records these satisfying moments. Sitting in bliss for longer hours, the awareness of the body and worldly troubles drop on its own. This detachment strengthens the desire to remain a watcher. A liking for these develops to a desire for more. There is no activity on our part. When activity seizes no fresh karma is created. The fire of tapas burn and extinguish the existing karma that came along and those that we created midway. Time goes by without any realization of it moving. One sits in a state that defeats death. The spirit in him grows and grows taking on the image of the source. He becomes one with the source. All the saints were testimony to this.

The spirit becomes the witness. The soul documents the experience. The physical body acts out the experience. The body that is a pack of meat is only a vehicle for one to gain experience, both pleasurable and sorrowful. If left unfulfilled these desires that register in the soul, will initiate another birth to work it out. With bliss that derived from interacting with the divine through thoughts and deeds these experiences too are registered in the soul, but is carried along after death and justifies a divine birth. The bliss settles in the spirit expanding it to the size and nature of its source. In due time we see the spark of the Divine has grown to replicate the source. The spark of spirit that attains radiance helps the soul realize its Erai nature, the Buddha nature.

An infant, toddler and a child does not incur a high cost to maintain. Its spirit knows only Bliss. It has not been accustomed to the pleasures of the senses yet. Yet it is happy by nature. It knows no pain, fear or grief. In simple terms, a child exhibits divinity in its core.

Then sadly all these changes one day. It is said that once one attains puberty his past karma that was dormant till then is activated leading him and moving him to perform accordingly. When one grows up and desires in him grows he becomes a liability. The external or superficial look of the body is given prominence and he begins to spend time and money to upkeep it. He devours food more that is needed, hence bringing more harm than good. In his rush to accumulate treasures he submits to stress and brings harm to his body.

The body naturally needs no or zero maintenance or low or minimal maintenance. But with a greater and bigger appetite the need to satisfy its satires grow and costs to maintain it grows corresponding and multiplies. It becomes a slave to our desires. When it can no longer me pushed to satisfy the worldly desires, we turn to external means and ways to keep the engine going and working. A high maintenance cost is incurred. In indulging in ways that harm the physical body, the deterioration is hastened. The spirit is neglected. The spark either remains dim or it diminishes bringing an end to life.

Srinatha Raghavan who posted on fb, a wonderful conversation that he had with an astrologer he met, shared the difference between fate and destiny that was explained by the retired scientist from the prestigious TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research).
I asked, "Then isn't our Future predetermined?" To which He replied, "A part of it is fixed, what we call Fate and a part of it is in your hands, what we call Destiny."

"What's the difference?" I asked.

"Fate is like Laws and Destiny akin to Rules, the former is fixed and predetermined and rarely can be broken, but the later can be broken through effort and if not broken, then at least bent as per situation" He said.

"What do I need to do, to know the difference?" I inquired.

He smiled and said, "Know yourself well and everything else will be known as well!"
I could relate this to another metaphor. Fate is when you work out your past desires that the soul or your SIM carries. Destiny is when you allow the spark of spirit to grow and consume you hence changing your fate and thus bringing a new destiny for you.

Sixteen years of apprenticeship to Agathiyar has shown me how he has, as the astrologer says, "Bent the rules as per situation." Agathiyar has brought me joy and bliss. I am surprised to see much change in me. I am surprised to see my thinking and perspective has changed. Agathiyar opened my eyes and heart. He opened a whole new world out there. He brought many good souls together to unite and carry out his agenda. He made us drop our individual pride and wants and brought us to think about others who were less fortunate then us.

Many doors opened. Many hearts opened. Resources started to flood in. People started to flood. Our task and responsibilities increased. But it gave us joy and peace to work on his mission. He took care of our individual needs while we attended to the needs of others. He kept encouraging and motivating us.

Today both Agathiyar and Lord Muruga have brought us to an understanding of the importance of the physical body to carry out his mission. To bring the consciousness within this tiny frame the body needs to be fit, hence the need to tone the body and make this fortress strong, fit to contain the energy that begins to build up in it.

From a name we gave our home so that others could easily identify and locate it in Whatsapp and Google Maps, Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia was given a new identity recently by Lord Muruga in a Nadi reading. It is now Agathiyar Tapovanam, an acknowledgement from the Divine for our work.

Just as there is a moral mentioned at the end of each of Aesop's fables, I attach below encouraging words from readers of this blog and the AVM members, that keeps me going.
Thank you so much for another entry! I was taken a back when u wrote abt reducing your writing frequency... I'm still at toddler stage in Siddha Margam but your writing brings nourishment , immerse joy & enlightenment in me. Please continue writing for us!

MA

The earth, sea and river is considered feminine. As to why, Nature is referred to as Mother, Keeley McDonald writes, "Its what feeds us, protects us and nurtures us. This is traditionally seen as a feminine trait."

All men and creatures are brought into this world by way of their mother. Even before a child has the first glance of this world it has lived in a space and world within its mother's womb. Here in this space of solitude a miracle takes place. A life forms. A form takes shape. A body is prepared to come out into the world and live its role. Where then does our journey into this world actually start?

We know when life ends. We know the signs of impending death. But when does life start? Is it when the child breaks out with the first cry as it gasps for air? But then there is already movement in the womb of the mother prior to that miraculous moment known as birth. Traveling even further back there is this sperm that makes a journey competing with others to enter an egg. Moving even further, life starts in the sac or testicles of a male and egg in the female.

Sara Stein brings us to the beginning in her book "The Body Book", Workman Publishing, NY, 1992. She writes,
A body contains tens of trillions of cells, all descended from the one cell that results from the union of an egg and a sperm. The one cell divides, the two it divided into divide again, and the four divide; and so, division by division, the whole human is built. And so we came to be. And so too, she says of our parents and grandparents.
What is this intelligence that oversees our formation and growth, even before we are aware of ourselves? Then when did you become aware of the self in you?

Does life then start with the entry of the soul and spirit into a physical body? Or does these two entities engineer the formation and growth of the physical body?

A spark from the Holy spirit takes a soul that is prepared to live a life full of desires and wishes, creates and engineers a physical body in the womb and upon taking birth, sustains it till the souls desires die out. If death comes before the soul's desires are exhausted, the spirit takes another soul and the process of rebirth starts again, exhausting the remaining desires. This cycle goes on and on till all desires are exhausted.

We live out our past Karma. When desires are exhausted, action too drops. Likes and dislikes are gone. With good virtues and noble and divine thoughts, one moves in the direction and purpose of living for others. His actions would then be for the good of others and humanity. Karma seizes to attach itself to his new found actions. He is reborn. He lives indefinitely in the physical world. As long as the divine and he wills he stays on to do God's work.

Just as all life is sustained by Mother Earth and her flowing waters, the lady of the house too looks to the needs of her family and keeps the family intact. What then is the role of women who bring new lives into the world, to cherish and love them, in spiritualism?

In the book on Kavyakantha Vasistha Ganapati Muni entitled "Nayana, A Biography of Kavyakantha Vasistha Ganapati Muni (from the original Telugu texts by Gunturu Lakshmikantam), Dr G Krishna mentions that Ganapati Muni had described his wife as a Tapa Sakhi, meaning comrade in Tapas just as Arundhati was the Tapa Sakhi of Vasistha and so were the wives of many of the Rishis.

“They never considered their wives as hindrances to Tapas.”

Ganapati Muni advised that women should not be barred from any spiritual or religious chores when it was prevalent at that time that women were not considered fit to worship Agni, study the Vedas and recite Vedic Mantra and were denied the benefits of Upayana. Ganapati Muni himself used to initiate women into Mantra Japa. Many were the women who were initiated into Gayathri Vidhya, which was considered exclusive to men.

Visalakshi, wife of Ganapati Muni took to the worship of Agni whenever Ganapati Muni was out of station.
“Visalakshi paid equal attention to house-keeping and Mantra Upasana. Ganapati did not share the belief that a woman was the source of sin and Maya. The study of scriptures had convinced him that the ancient rishis had practiced austerity and attained self-realization without giving up family life and responsibilities. Women were not treated as objects of pleasure by our ancient rishis. They were as qualified as men to discharge spiritual responsibilities. The ancient rishis by their exemplary behavior became spiritual preceptors to their wives and helped to establish a well ordered society.”
Looking towards Ramakrishna's life, we are shown that husband and wife can live together as spiritual companions.
By his marriage Sri Ramakrishna admitted the great value of marriage in man's spiritual evolution, and by adhering to his monastic vows he demonstrated the imperative necessity of self-control, purity, and continence, in the realization of God. By this unique spiritual relationship with his wife he proved that husband and wife can live together as spiritual companions. Thus his life is a synthesis of the ways of life of the householder and the monk.

Shri Ramkrishna turned his mind to the fulfillment of imparting religious and spiritual teachings to her. About the experience of this period Sarada Devi used to say afterwards: “ I felt as if a vessel full of divine bliss was permanently installed in my heart...I can not adequately describe the heavenly joy which filled my heart...!”

Just like Ganapathi Muni and Ramakrishna, Lahari Mahasaya too was a householder. It is said of him in "The Teaching Style of Lahiri Mahasaya" by Swami Kebalananda that,
Lahiri Mahasaya was no bookish interpreter of the scriptures. Effortlessly he dipped into the ‘divine library.’ Foam of words and spray of thoughts gushed from the fountain of his omniscience. He had the wondrous clavis which unlocked the profound philosophical science embedded ages ago in the Vedas. If asked to explain the different planes of consciousness mentioned in the ancient texts, he would smilingly assent.
“I will undergo those states, and presently tell you what I perceive.” He was thus diametrically unlike the teachers who commit scripture to memory and then give forth unrealized abstractions.
Instead he would ask of his disciples to answer while he guided them subtly.
“Please expound the holy stanzas as the meaning occurs to you.” The taciturn guru often gave this instruction to a near-by disciple. “I will guide your thoughts, that the right interpretation be uttered.” In this way many of Lahiri Mahasaya’s perceptions came to be recorded, with voluminous commentaries by various students.
Lahiri Mahasaya’s wife Ma Kashi Moni shares the moment when she realized her husband as a realized soul.
It was years before I came to realize the divine stature of my husband. One night, in this very room, I had a vivid dream. Glorious angels floated in unimaginable grace above me. So realistic was the sight that I awoke at once; the room was strangely enveloped in dazzling light. My husband, in lotus posture, was levitated in the center of the room, surrounded by angels who were worshiping him with the supplicating dignity of palm-folded hands.
Astonished beyond measure, I was convinced that I was still dreaming.
Woman,” Lahiri Mahasaya said, “you are not dreaming. Forsake your sleep forever and forever.” As he slowly descended to the floor, I prostrated myself at his feet.
“Master,” I cried, “again and again I bow before you! Will you pardon me for having considered you as my husband? I die with shame to realize that I have remained asleep in ignorance by the side of one who is divinely awakened. From this night, you are no longer my husband, but my guru. Will you accept my insignificant self as your disciple?”
The master touched me gently. “Sacred soul, arise. You are accepted.”
He motioned toward the angels. “Please bow in turn to each of these holy saints.
When I had finished my humble genuflections, the angelic voices sounded together, like a chorus from an ancient scripture.
Consort of the Divine One, thou art blessed. We salute thee.” They bowed at my feet and lo! their refulgent forms vanished. The room darkened.
My guru asked me to receive initiation into Kriya Yoga.
“Of course,” I responded. “I am sorry not to have had its blessing earlier in my life.”
The time was not ripe.” Lahiri Mahasaya smiled consolingly. “Much of your karma I have silently helped you to work out. Now you are willing and ready.
He touched my forehead. Masses of whirling light appeared; the radiance gradually formed itself into the opal-blue spiritual eye, ringed in gold and centered with a white pentagonal star.
Penetrate your consciousness through the star into the kingdom of the Infinite.” My guru’s voice had a new note, soft like distant music.
Vision after vision broke as oceanic surf on the shores of my soul. The panoramic spheres finally melted in a sea of bliss. I lost myself in ever-surging blessedness. When I returned hours later to awareness of this world, the master gave me the technique of Kriya Yoga.
From that night on, Lahiri Mahasaya never slept in my room again. Nor, thereafter, did he ever sleep. He remained in the front room downstairs, in the company of his disciples both by day and by night.
I will confess a sin which I committed against my guru-husband. Some months after my initiation, I began to feel forlorn and neglected. One morning Lahiri Mahasaya entered this little room to fetch an article; I quickly followed him. Overcome by violent delusion, I addressed him scathingly.
“You spend all your time with the disciples. What about your responsibilities for your wife and children? I regret that you do not interest yourself in providing more money for the family.”
The master glanced at me for a moment, then lo! he was gone. Awed and frightened, I heard a voice resounding from every part of the room:
It is all nothing, don’t you see? How could a nothing like me produce riches for you?”
“Guruji,” I cried, “I implore pardon a million times! My sinful eyes can see you no more; please appear in your sacred form.”
I am here.” This reply came from above me.
I looked up and saw the master materialize in the air, his head touching the ceiling. His eyes were like blinding flames. Beside myself with fear, I lay sobbing at his feet after he had quietly descended to the floor.
Woman,” he said, “seek divine wealth, not the paltry tinsel of earth. After acquiring inward treasure, you will find that outward supply is always forthcoming.” He added, “One of my spiritual sons will make provision for you.
My guru’s words naturally came true; a disciple did leave a considerable sum for our family.

When members of the AVM family seeked the blessings of "Aiya" before embarking on a pilgrimage of temples in India, performing remedies for some, before making our way to Kallar Ashram to participate in the Guru Puja of 2016, they were told to look out for Agathiyar who would be present at the places we go to. During that journey we could not ignore that there was always a lady who either blessed us, gave us prasad, kept us company, or accompanied us in prayer.

At Sri Rangam an old lady looked towards the sky and raised her hands bringing down the blessings from heaven to earth and on us the moment we took notice of her and offered our pranams. She accepted a token of contribution collected from everyone from the AVM family back home, that Bala Chandran carried with him, as directed by "Aiya". We were asked to be alert and identify and know that it would be Agathiyar who accepted our token.

At Thiruvanaikaval temple as I hurried looking for my favourite spot that of Lord Dhaksanamurthy, a lady came up to me from nowhere, placed prasad in my hands and moved on without a word.

At Palani while Bala Chandran, Sahalini and Malarvathy climbed the stairs of Palani on their knees, a lady clad in a green saree carrying a young male child who had just shaved his head, accompanied us all the way up to the temple. It surprised us that she stopped each time we stopped too and continued the climb when these three children were ready to resume the climb. There was no reason for her to follow us for it would only delay her climb up the stairs, but yet she did.

Still at Palani, as we walked into Bhogar's sannadhi, we see a lady clad in green among the rest of us gathered to pay our respects to the Siddha and receive the Vibhuti Prasad from the priest. She caught our attention because she was chanting Bhuvaneshwari's song aloud. After the arati by the priest she left the room with the rest of us. Since Bala Chandran wanted to recite the Siddhas' names, we came back to the corridor before Bhogar's sannadhi again and took our seat. And she came in with us! She took her seat beside Bala Chandran. As it was closing time a couple of priest kept signalling us from the entrance/exit door, asking us to hurry up and wind up the recitation. Bala pleaded for a few more moments through hand gesture as he began to double the tempo of his chant. As we all tried our best to keep up with the amazing speed at which Bala ran through the recitation, the lady in green kept telling him not to stop but continue the chant. As we came to the end of the recitation of the names of Siddhas, she got up immediately and walked briskly into Bhogar's samadhi room. We followed her. She applied the kumkum on our foreheads and rushed out of the room as she had earlier. Amazing!

At Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple, an elderly lady again in green, blessed our congregation from AVM.

As we stood on the river banks of Kaveri waiting for the priest to come by and take us to the Nattadresswarar Temple in the middle of Kaveri, just as our congregation stepped into the coracle, the village folk gathered to tag along. Among them was a lady in green who followed us to and fro.

On returning home, the AVM family approached "Aiya" again to ask if he had accepted our worship and if he was pleased with us, Aiya confirmed that the monetary token was received by Agathiyar himself. Then he threw in a surprise on the gender of Agathiyar!

A MEMORABLE JOURNEY WITHIN - THE YEARS 2002 TO 2018

When Agathiyar asked me to commission his image in the shape and form of his granite statue at Agasthiyampalli, he was only a piece of metal. You would wonder if these were the idols that made their way to the temples and homes, seeing its artisans sit on the piece of rock or bronze metal in my case and carve it eventually to turn into a beautiful image of the divine; knocking, hitting and chiseling to bring form and detail and define its intricate features.

The granite statue of Agathiyar in Agasthiyampalli
So it was written in the Nadi that Agathiyar be made in Swamimalai. Varadaraj and his brothers at their shed at Bronze Creative got to bringing form to a bronze piece. After an in-house prayer that was customary upon completion, Varadaraj performed a puja at the Adhi Kumbeswar Temple in Kumbakonam as directed by Agathiyar. He was then flown to Malaysia.

On arrival at our shores in 2010, Agathiyar had asked us to chant his name 100,000 times and give him a bath with nine items. My family and friends could only manage 45,000 that day. But Agathiyar accepted it. He was only a metal till then. But he had asked us to give him uru (the spark) and uyir (life). The spark had to come from us. Life had to be given by us too he directed. With continuous chanting of his name over the years and libation or abhisegam to his statue and performing the ritual of lighting the fire pit or homam, the spark became a majestic flame. The metal idol became alive. In 2013, he opened his eyes as he had done at Agasthiyampalli and Papanasam.

The divine has come down to reside in our homes and our hearts. These days the energy is too great for the home and body to contain. Hence Lord Muruga in a Jeeva Nadi reading has asked us to bring it within our control through meditation, harnessing and redirecting the energy within. As the divine presence and its energy is too large to accommodate in a private and individual's home, the need to move has also arise. We do not know how it will take place or where we shall move to as for now. It could be another home but more spacious or develop into a typical temple or be a meditation hall or a traditional ashram or a commune. The Siddhas shall decide for us.

The very first time I was told to build a temple was during my very first Nadi reading. Agathiyar asked me to help in building temples and build one for him. I was pretty excited then. Going around asking temple committees if they could accommodate a shrine for Agathiyar only proofed a failure. Then the fire died down only to be rekindled by my very first guru Supramania Swami. He mooted the idea and I jumped the wagon. But we were stopped even before we could start building the temple for Lord Murugan, although we had purchased a plot of land for the purpose in Thiruvannamalai. I thought the subject of building a temple was closed as we had taken the initiative then. But it was not to be so.

Fourteen years later in 2016, we had an opportunity to help Tavayogi build his ashram cum temple at Kallar. Recently Lord Muruga asked of me to build one for him in a Nadi reading. I hesitated and dragged my feet in submitting to his wishes for various reasons: Not another temple? Aren’t the existing temples enough? As it is, we are saddened looking at the sad state and condition of some of the existing temples; we see the infighting and fight for control over the management of these places of worship and for want of power, I did not want to go through the runt and problems in managing one. If I was directed to do something alone, I would readily go for it, as I had done all these while; but here was a collective venture where I needed the help of people and involvement of many parties. Above it all, we needed finance to make it happen.

Seeing me not responding positively to his request, Lord Muruga sends his disciple Agathiyar to convince me into submitting. Agathiyar was always gentle with his words and towards us, in the many Nadi readings we have had with him. If Lord Muruga was commanding in nature, not surprising as he was an audacious warrior as described by P.Karthigayan in his “History of Medical and Spiritual Sciences of Siddhas of Tamil Nadu”, Notion Press 2016, Agathiyar being the grand old man, was humble in his approach and manner. And who did he choose to come into but an old man. He was the father of a devotee. He told his son quietly that his body was aching as if he was going into a trance moments before Agathiyar came into him and delivered his messages, seated on a chair right opposite his shrine at the 80 year old temple of his in Pulau Carey, throughout the seating.

He motioned me to come up close to him and in a whisper asked if my home was fine? I panicked for a moment thinking what could possibly have happened to my home in our absence. Then I remembered Lord Muruga’s request and figured that he was asking me about the temple. I asked him if he meant that I had to move out and he nodded and told me my home was no more suitable. As I shaked my head from left to right at being cornered into giving an answer to their long pending request, he asked if I would not do it with a disappointed look.

I saw the same look in the eyes of Tavayogi when try as much as he did to get me to see Agathiyar blink in his granite statue at Agasthiyampalli, I failed to see it. Visually disappointed, he motioned me to enter the inner sanctum on the pretext of taking my photo. As I was about to sit down on the floor, Tavayogi threw me his shawl, asking me to lay it on the stained floor before sitting down. That is when I turned to look at Agathiyar and his left eye was open! He gave a large grin and watched me leave his temple, hushed and hurried away by Tavayogi.

Now when Agathiyar asked me if I would not carry out his requests personally, not in the Nadi as previously, but face to face, my heart sank low. I felt guilty. But still I kept my silence not wanting to give a commitment. After a moment of silence, he looked me in the eye again and told me, “Fine, I shall do it for you.” What could I say but to thank him and move away. I announce to the others that Agathiyar was there with us and called on them to approach him and get his blessings. When my wife sat in front of him, he told her “It will be done.” She was baffled as she did not understand his statement. When she told me what Agathiyar had said, I answered her that he meant the new premises for him and Lord Muruga will materialize. As I stood in a distance watching the devotees get his blessings, Agathiyar turned to me and gave me a look that I comprehended as he had something to say. I was right. This time he gave me the reasons why my present home was no more conducive. As the home could not accommodate the growing AVM family that gathered during his celebrations, due to space constrains, I had to move. I never questioned him but he chose to explain the reasons to me. He assured me again as he had assured my wife earlier. I thanked him again and moved away. Throughout the whole jaw dropping event he sat in his chair as would an old man and spoke softly and gently. This was the first time we had an encounter in person with Agathiyar.

The first time I had sciatica, Agathiyar told me it was due to my intense yogic practices and asked me to stop them immediately. Since then I have had triggered the sciatic nerve four times between 2011 and now. If the reason for my sciatica a month ago was that I sneezed and pulled the nerve, Lord Muruga tells me that it was his doing and that he wanted me to wind down and sit still.

I see it has a blessing in disguise. I had distanced myself from many events preferring to keep to myself, sitting in the company of Agathiyar. But then being a householder, you are obligated to attend family events and social gatherings. It would be different if I adorned the garb of a sanyasin. Nobody would bother me. The back pain was now a reason for me to drop attending these events.

To contain the energy that had resulted due to engaging in activities of the nature of Sariyai, Kriyai and Yoga over the years, the divine has brought us to settle down into the state of Mouna Gnana. When thought settles action seizures. When action stops the effects of the planets become redundant. When the planets seize to affect you there is no death hence no more reason to be born again. Then you have achieved what you came for.

When I began this journey on the Siddha path, without any idea of where to start and whom to look to for guidance, like a rudderless ship I did sail from shore to shore, association and societies carrying Agathiyar's name, hoping to anchor somewhere where there might be a glimmer of hope or light that showed or illuminated the way.

But I could not connect with them. And so it was that I picked up Thavathiru Rengaraja Desigar’s prayer as mine and asked for a guru to take me along on this journey. The prayer went as follows.
This was my Taraga Mantra. The prayer was eventually answered. Tavayogi came into my life. He took me to Agathiyar’s abodes. He would point out to me that the Siddhas were ushering us, following us, and showering us with flower petals.

Travelling with Tavayogi to the Holy spots, I noticed that he too had a mantra that he constantly repeated at these places. It was Ramalinga Adigal's wish to see the day when he would enter the state of silence.
Tavayogi would cry each time he sang this verse. I could see his yearning to merge with Erai.

Having seen many places of interest and witnessing numerous miracles through Tavayogi, I prayed that it was enough as I was convinced. I asked that Agathiyar stop directing me to other gurus and more pilgrimage spots. I wanted him to come to me now. It was not arrogance in any manner but a sincere wish that whatever he wanted to give me or show me in these journeys, be given in my home within the four walls. Again my prayer was answered. Agathiyar came in the form of a statue.

I wanted to spend some private and personal time with him as Nakkirar had wished for in his Vinayagar Thiruagaval. I took up Nakkirar's prayer as mine.

He created the space and the much needed silence for me to contemplate in the comfort of my home where the guru and disciple could sit in silence and merge in similar thoughts; focusing on the feet of Shiva, the one becoming the other and understanding that all is a dream and that it is all his play through the grace of Lord Ganapathy.

When Agathiyar introduced me to Tavayogi, Tavayogi showed me Agathiyar and stepped aside for us to hold on to Agathiyar and grow. When Jnana Jhothiamma stepped into the Kallar Ashram her guardian angels Karupana Samy and Mother Goddess handed her over to Agathiyar, stepping back just as they had promised to her earlier.

Agathiyar who groomed us right from the beginning: bringing us to have faith and belief on him; inculcating high virtues and values in us; asking us to look beyond our needs and extending help to the unfortunate; teaching us the intricacies of the Siddha puja and its associated rituals; bringing us to the forefront and to public attention by asking us to conduct and perform these rituals at temples and public places, after grooming us perfectly has finally handed us to his Guru Lord Muruga, the God of Wisdom or Gnana Pandithan. Agathiyar has carefully guided our souls and today we embark onto the next stage of revelation and spiritual advancement. We look forward to their continuous guidance.

Meanwhile, we at Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia (AVM) will tone down our rituals for the divine energy is so enormous now that both the body and home cannot contain it. Henceforth we will continue with our routine rituals of libation and homam only on Pornami and Amavasai days. The rests of the Thursdays shall see us sit quietly, contemplating on the divine and imbibe his energy. AVM has officially moved up the rung on the spiritual ladder becoming Agathiyar Tapovanam Malaysia, an honor given by Lord Muruga. We pray that the divine shall lead us into a meditative state and that of Mouna Gnanam eventually.

COMING TO THE SIDDHAS

The history of the Siddhas has been shrouded in mystery. There are many accounts of their lives and accomplishment written by numerous authors. Their stories are told in the ancient Nadi leaves, that has come out in print. These stories carry their life achievements and accomplishments but very little is known about their personal lives, families, and the society at that period of time. They were gurus or masters in the true sense for they revealed the mystery of life and creation to their students, who carried on the tradition. Although some of these stories sound ridiculous and beyond logic and our comprehension, we prefer not to dwell into it but pick up their messages for humanity.

So are the Siddhas our ancestors? It definitely looks like it.

Imagine you are speaking to someone from the past. Imagine he is guiding you in the present. Who are they who come to your aid the very moment you call them? It is happening, right now and here in the present. The Siddhas are making known of their presence in many unique ways. They come in the form of the nadi, or oracles. They come through people we know. They come as total strangers. All for the sole purpose of delivering messages and most importantly to deliver us from the mortal state into becoming immortals.

A true master would not keep their disciples as subordinates to serve them forever but to raise them too to the stature of theirs. This is what the Siddhas do. They shall raise us to their stature, provided we heed their words. They will await and rejoice as we join them in the state of light. Every man following the path of the Siddhas can be assured to become a Siddha too. Ramalinga Adigal had achieve the state of a Siddha equal to the Adhi Siddha Shiva. He attained the state of Erai too. Erai stepped aside and gave him the staff of authority to carry out his five divine tasks that of creation, sustaining, destroying, veiling and showering of grace.

The Siddhas had an upper hand in nature. Nature submitted to them. They are known to manipulate and change the acts of nature and fate not for individual gains but for the betterment of, be it an individual or people at large. Here is a lesson for us too. The moment we do an act not for ourselves but for the good of another nature comes to our aid. In these acts no karma is attached too.

Supramania Swami a year before he went into samadhi, gave me the fruits and merits of his 40 years of austerities or tapas saying that you can't even take that with you and hence the need and reason to leave it behind.

Tavayogi gave his authority to Mataji before his samadhi. Speaking to me a couple of days earlier to his samadhi, he told me Mataji will take care of the running of his ashram. He had initiated her into reading the Jeeva Nadi, once read by him, now in her possession prior to his demise. Today Mataji runs the Ashram with Tavayogi present in the subtle form, still guiding her.

Mataji will host the 16th Guru Puja celebrations at Kallar Ashram beginning on 26 December 2018.

Unlike us who are fully captivated by the material world, the soul that is trained in yoga will continue its tavam even after it has left the physical body. These highly evolved souls will continue leading its disciples even after death of their physical body. If there is a very strong reason, they make themselves apparent to their disciples.

While the souls of ordinary people, who are lured to the pleasures of the world continue to reach out to these pleasures even after death, the trained soul of a yogi who has shunned the material gains continues to be in a state of peace and samadhi or one with the source forever. While the soul of one who was immersed in the pleasures of the world comes back to take another physical body to work out its remaining desires, the soul of these yogis continue guiding their disciples after their samadhi and eventually merges with the spirit (of erai) after a certain period in time. Though some chose to come back for the sake of humanity, most of these saints remain in their realm but extend help and guidance to their followers in many subtle ways.

Once we have gained and earned the respect of a guru be assured that you are within their grasp henceforth. They shall continue to guide you and shall care for your needs. They shall stand guard over you from all forms of danger. They shall forewarn you of dangers. They stand guard over you, becoming a beacon of light in this vast ocean of live, steering you across the open sea of pleasures and resistance.

When we die, we are met by our family members, relatives, friends and those who we had come into contact in our lives. They usher us into that realm. For those who eventually make it to the kingdom of Erai, the whole lineage of gurus shall await to usher us in and place us in a seat in their divine kingdom.

When Ramalinga Adigal finally made it to Erai's kingdom, winding his way through 1. a jhoti malai or luminous mountain, 2. a veethi or street, 3. medai or platform, 4. kudam or room, and arriving at 5. a yezh nilai maadam or seven tier hall, he stops to explain the states of each nilai or level. Carrying on further he comes to 6. a tambam or staff or post. Climbing it, he explains what he saw thence: sakthigal in thousands, 7. a manimudi, then 8. kodu mudi or a peak and 9. a 1008 koyil. Heading now for the entrance or kopura vayil he saw kodi sathargal, sathigal or sathargal and sathigal in crores, ten million, questioning him as to who he was who had made it this far.

At another entrance stood 5 who showed him to a mani vayil, another entrance where he saw a couple. They showed him to another door, where stood Mother Goddess in all her majesty. Receiving her arul or grace and amudham or divine nectar, he is shown Lord Nadaraja's sannadhi. Adigal does not elaborate futher on what he saw or gained here but only could utter that "Only God will know what I received therein in the Lord's presence." He hints in another song of this though: that the Mayil or peacock became a kuyil or cuckoo; seeing Vallal (Erai), having left behind Jati or caste, and samayam or traditions, he then saw Arul Jhoti; and leaving behind all the lies he saw Aiyar (his Lord).

Source: http://www.thiruarutpa.org/thirumurai/v/T344/tm/aanipponnampalak_kaatsi Listen to this wonderful composition at this site.

It is said that Bhagawan Ramana came across a similar entrance in the Holy hill of Arunachala. Upon entering it he was surprised to see it was hollow. Journeying inside he saw sights that were closely depicted in Rajnikant's movie "Baba" where a mystery man leads him into a portal and traversing green meadows and snow clad mountains he finally appears at Baba's camp.

The spark that came from the source, the spirit of Erai, took on a soul and a body, where all it's life's experience are recorded and retained in the soul, merges with the source eventually after many births of perfecting and purifying. That moment of union back to the source is sama + adhi, samadhi, one with the source.

Immaterial how the yogis drop their physical bodies, the soul merges in samadhi. The yogi can succumb to an illness, an attack, or any other means of death, the soul that has evolved to a high spiritual state, through a period of continued tapas and further purification, shall enter the kingdom of Erai.

For a man who has much desires he comes back to take on another physical body to exhaust his desires. The soul that carries much desires for worldly things chooses its next birth where it can come again and fulfill its desires. A soul that had loved to rule over others would come again to rule. A soul that served others comes again to serve. The soul that yearns for the kingdom of Erai, comes again to continue its journey towards Erai, that was suspended midway due to various reasons.

Hence it is of utmost importance that we are careful with our wishes and desires for what we desire now shall determine our future births. When man has exhausted all his material desires and turns towards his creator that new desire now will take a new form, relevant to his new found desire.

A man who had succumbed to an illness, fought for 5 years, finally giving up decided to let go. Agathiyar had recommended several remedies and most importantly ask that he not give up. But yet after all the remedies were done on behalf of him by a close relative of his he could not be saved. People around the relative who went all the way to help his disabled relative, chided him of what is the point of him spending so much time and money to consult the Nadi and seek out remedies. In the end he died too like others. There is never a Nadi reading for a death man. But Agathiyar called in his close relative and asked him what was he to do when even after he had done all the remedies given so that his bedridden relative could live, the crying soul decided it was enough. He had given up the battle even after the numerous reminders not to surrender to death.

When Tavayogi seeked medical attention when his fever did not stop, the doctors discovered he had a health problem. He underwent several procedures and recovered sufficiently to return to his ashram. Agathiyar says he heard our prayer and sat with the other Siddhas to perform a yagam so that Tavayogi could live.

After some time Tavayogi succumbed to the same symptoms and was warded again in ICU. This time around he wanted to go, for it had been far too long that he had postponed his desire of going into samadhi, all for the sake of ours. When he was re-admitted he called me to say that in event he did not return to his ashram, Mataji shall take care of the ashram. Tavayogi was treated, discharged and brought back to the ashram. He passed away peacefully within a couple of hours after arriving at the Kallar Ashram grounds.

When I succumbed to sciatica Lord Muruga after healing me, told me the importance of taking care of the body to attain higher states. Let us not invite death he told. Both Lord Muruga and Agathiyar sent the message loud and clear that one should strive to survive, given all the medical facilities made available in modern times, be it alopathy or siddha. If he is willing to fight, and not give up, he would come through fine. The Siddhas want us to fight in the face of illness and not succumb to it. Only then can remedies work for our betterment. The surgeon or doctor only administers and treats or operates on us. Remember it is the divine that heals from within.

My mother fought her illness when she was warded some years back. The doctors told us she was a strong lady. We did pray too. She survived. Similarly many who were given hours or days, survived because of the medical attention given and their spirit to fight off the illness. We need not fight the battle alone. Take the hands of Erai and face the facts of life with renewed strength. Join the support groups where you will find strength and motivation to combat your illness. Never give up in all circumstances for there is yet a silver lining and hope. Walk in on a Nadi reading by Agathiyar, and you would be amazed at the amount of motivation he gives us. Erai is just a stone throw away. Erai and his apostles, and our guardian angels, are waiting to guide and help. All we need is to ask, not to remove the problem but to give us inner strength to shoulder it, to give us a solution to overcome it.

Our ancestors have a wonderful system in place. In times of need who do we turn too? We have Lord Ganapathy placed in every temple and street. Lord Ganapathy who resides in the very first chakra of the Sukma Degam, also resides alongside roads and at the entrance of the temples our ancestors built. He is known to ward off danger and to remove obstacles. We approach him at the start of any new venture.

Agathiyar does not interfere in the workings of natural law unless there is absolute need for it. Although he would just remain the watcher, he will give hope even till the last breath leaves the mortal body. So it is only fair that we fight till the end. The irony is that we tend to fight for all the other reasons, fighting to upkeep our properties and post, fighting for certain causes, fighting to defend our opinions but give up when the body begins to ail.

Although everything is in its place, if we desire for something and pray for it, the divine accommodates our wishes too. But then remember that he will have to move the chess pieces carefully for all action produces a domino effect. But nothing comes without a price. We still have to face the repercussions. So we should wish carefully. A better option would be to leave everything in the hands of the divine rather then push our personal desires to the edge, to the extent of harming others. The moment we drop our desires, Erai moves in and moves us. Then it is purely his desire and wish and you can be assured of success.

  • Well explained about light & sounds and how both works in us.
To tell you the truth, I was not least into writing. I was an artist back then. I am equally amazed too. I go back and read each post again and again too. I then praise and thank Agathiyar for such great writings. Its all his writings. He moves the pen.

Thank you very much for being with me.

How can I not love Agathiyar? He addressed me the very first time through a Nadi reading. He asked that I come to the worship of Siddhas. That is how my journey started on the path of the Siddhas. He took me by my hand bringing me to associations and societies that carried his name. He introduced me to Supramania Swami and Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal. Tavayogi in turn introduced me to Agathiyar, his abodes and temples. Agathiyar came into my home as a small statue. He has now come into our lives. He resides in our homes and our hearts. He cares, guides and keeps harm away. Even before we arrive at a place he is there to usher us. He keeps watch over us. He heals us. He motivates us. He assures us.

When I was having pain as a result of sciatica he calmed me saying that he knew I could not withstand pain, hence he has cushioned the intensity of the pain. When my wife and I were doubtful as to whether to pursue a surgery for her, he described the entire process to us exactly as how the doctors had described and gave us assurance that he would be with her throughout the operation. When we were unsure if we should heed the doctors advise to remove her gall bladder, he told us it was fine to do so. When my daughter came down with the dengue fever he came with Thirumular to hike up her platelet level. When my other daughter was feeling down and low in spirit after breaking her tibia and fibula bones in her leg, he assured her he was with her, saw through the whole ordeal, mending and healing it naturally.

So was it with the rests of the AVM family. Agathiyar has worked his way into their hearts and homes too. When Bala Chandran rode his bike into the rear of a lorry that stopped suddenly, Agathiyar was there to catch him. When he slipped on his climb up to Pothigai peak, Agathiyar was there again to hold on to him. When the doctors drew the curtain close and rapidly attended to Master Uva's mother at the intensive care unit, Agathiyar came as a gust of wind and revived her.

Agathiyar was always present to save the day. He was our super hero.

All he asked of us was to worship him. But why does he ask to be worshiped? Why does the divine need to be adored, praised and worshiped?

All the saints have praised the Lord. They have sung pathigams, hymns and songs in praise of Erai. Generations later we still sing their songs of praise too.

When we praise Erai, we are raised to new heights of well being. Positive thoughts flow in and are built and reinforced. Positive energy is created around us. Positive vibrations surround us. They form a force field shielding us from the negative factors. The soul in us grows to engulf us in bliss. The bliss and happiness expands to envelope all those around us passing and showering the expanse of energy to others. The good values in us brushes on to another, and is shed and passed on to the rest of mankind. A change takes place in those we come into contact with too. A domino effect takes place. The magic is passed on to others. The soul gains Atma Balam or spiritual strength, virtues and merits in giving to others, and in sharing. The soul grows manifold. Now fully enriched through the adventure it has had here, the soul upon death lingers around to bring others to an equally enriching state before perishing. The accompanying spirit then returns to its source.

It is important that we live life to the fullest and in a positive way. If we were to always grumble and find fault in all things, never having a good thing to say about another, being selfish and uncaring except caring for ones own needs, not heeding the plight of others, the soul begins to shrink, the light falters and eventually dies off. No amount of attention and care could revive the soul to it's original state of brightness.

Living a positive life, the flame that flickers in us is made to grow larger hence consuming all the negative traits in us. The soul is strengthen through devotion. We become that which we praise, worship and adore. Worship Agathiyar and we become him, carrying his traits. Worship Muruga and we become him. Worship the devil and you become one. It all boils down to choices that we make. The choices that we make in our lives determines and brings the corresponding change in us, our thoughts, actions and our surroundings.

Worship in a way brings us to focus on good thoughts and indulge in good deeds. The bliss that is derived in worship sinks deep into the soul and into the level of the cells of the physical body too. This revitalizes and heals the body. Subtle changes take place within and without. Every cell is made divine. Every thought that flows is divine. Man is raised then to the next state that of ma manithan, a divine man and even a Mahan or God man. From there the divine brings him to even further and higher states of being. As divinity settles in him the soul reflects the corresponding change in the various states and grows as well. One is blessed to achieve these states in one birth; otherwise he comes back to continue from where he left off. Association with the good forces hastens this progress. Association with negative talk and thoughts pulls us deeper into the pit of darkness. The most compassionate Agathiyar has let down a rope for us to hold on and raise ourselves up, saving us from falling further into the whirlpool of confusion and suffering due to ignorance and bad association.

Devoted to him, slowly he brings us to take notice, to see and ponder on the fate of fellow beings. From self centeredness he brings us to open our eyes to the plight of others. The thought sets in whether it is sufficient that he takes care of us and our needs alone. What about the friends and all those we know? Should not he take care of them too. What about the rest of humanity? Watching the newsreels and documentaries we are brought to the stark reality that takes place out there in other regions and countries. War, famine, poverty, natural calamities has driven people away from their homes to seek shelter in refugee camps and makeshift tents with infants, children and the elderly, slowly dying out of hunger, illness, malnutrition and lack of medical attention. Who is to pray for them? Our hearts condemn these atrocities on fellow beings and opens up to the casualties of these terror. Today we at AVM pray for all of humanity, that the good Lord should shelter and care for them too. Agathiyar brought us to perform the homam. Along the way he reveals the reason for asking us to do it. Our prayers would help evade natural calamities from taking place, lessening its severity and intensity. On a personal level it removes ones karma promising a better future.

Agathiyar brought us to do charity, giving unconditionally to those who are deprived of the basics. Hence Amudha Surabhi (AS), and Thondu Seivom (TS) came to be and merged to become Persatuan Teman Setia (PTS). We provide food, groceries, clothing, and fees towards education to the less fortunate.

It was good to see Gunalan taking up this noble service in his area sending some stuffs for the kids in Klang Utama. If everyone can take care of a soul in his neighbourhood, we can cover a large area. It can be as simple as what I do. Giving rice packets to the drain sweepers and garbage collectors. They do not earn much but do a lot of work. Anyway we need them and their services. Imagine if they do not take the trash away or clear the drains. That's a great way of showing our gratitude. These are people who come by our house daily. We do not even need to go hunt for the poor. Let us widen our scope of giving to everyone who deserves rather than limit it to the homeless and at shelters. Besides the scheduled delivery of these stuffs to the unfortunate, giving through these charitable arms, we should cultivate the thought to spontaneously give when someone in need comes by. This is dayavu, karunai, or compassion that comes from the heart. The eyes see, the heart melts and the hand reaches into our pockets to give.

From praying for personal gain Agathiyar slowly opened our eyes to pray for the welfare of all. As he says the rituals we conduct goes beyond personal gains and envelopes and reaches the prapanjam, bringing benefit to all of creation, healing it too. The smart alec will question how this is all possible. We chose not to question but follow our gurus dictates. He sees the past, present and future. We know for sure that all that he tells us to do will have a positive result and effect and end for the good of his creation. Just as we do not directly see the process whereby water from the sea returns as rain showers, we believe the tiny little things we do goes a long way in bringing changes in very subtle ways.

Recently Lord Muruga has expressed the need to take extreme care of the body and stay alive to attain Gnana. The body is needed to achieve all the glorious and exalted states that is promised by the Siddhas.

The Siddhas gave equal importance to the body, soul and spirit. There was a need to keep the body healthy and strong for the divine to reside in it. A spark from the divine took a soul and entered the fetus. The soul determined the direction, form and gender the physical body would take, so as to attain the experience that it needed to gain in that particular birth. The soul absorbs all possible experiences and leaves the body when the body attains old age, or perishes due to illness, due to accidental death, or death in other forms.

For a Siddha, he brings about a change in his body through various means hence keeping death away. The soul of a Siddha lives in his body for ages as he brings the spirit to dwell within and in each cell in his physical body. The physical body that houses the soul also houses the spirit. The soul takes on the image and nature of the spirit. The spark from the spirit that came to reside within, takes the form of the deity worshiped.

For a common man when the physical body reaches its expiry date the soul prepares to leave. The body drops dead. The soul spends some time in another plane before making its way back to the kingdom of the spirit.

When the spark from the spirit is ready for another adventure it takes on a soul which prepares an appropriate body for it to undergo all the experience it as targeted for itself, once again.
