The back pain that recurred days ago, which I wrote about, has disappeared just as it came on. The expelling of the three doshas, namely phlegm, bile, and wind, whenever I lay down to sleep, has stopped. The results of the blood sample that I gave a week back during my regular medical checkup turned out to be fabulous. I am deeply grateful to Agathiyar for the health and wealth he continues to shower on me.
I choose to write what is relayed to me by Agathiyar through Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal, or when he comes through the Nadi readings, and in recent times through his devotees, and at times when he dictates what he has to say to either Mahindren or me. And so, many times did he lament about the sad state of his devotees who had lost sight of why they came to the path, or had no idea where it would take them. Some stop short of reading about the Siddhas, while others continue to debate on them endlessly. To those who had merely worshiped him for years, some as many as thirty-plus years, he told them that they had wasted those precious years, not keeping fit nor having upgraded themselves to the next stages and phases.
Agathiyar, coming as the guru, brings the Light within and without, dispels the darkness by driving away ignorance, had me take notes on the ideal Siddha journey, giving a simple account and run-up to the moment of merging with Light, that which we came for and have been trying endlessly to attain throughout the crores of births we have taken thus far.
Many a saint has often mentioned the human birth as the highest amongst all births. Adi Sankara says,
“Only through God’s grace may we obtain the three rarest gifts: Human birth; the longing for liberation; and discipleship to an illumined teacher.”
Swami Chidvilasananda in INNER TREASURES, a Siddha Yoga Publication, 1995, mirrors Sankara’s thoughts.
“This is where you have the opportunity to learn the greatest lessons and ascend to the highest awareness. Even celestial beings want to take birth in this place. It is the work of the Saints to awaken people from Samsara, the world of the wandering, from this Chakra, this wheel, the cycle of birth and death.’’
It is said that God told Ramalinga Adigal to build the Satya Gnana Sabai as a place of learning for the celestial beings.
Swami Chidvilasananda's guru, Swami Muktananda, quotes Saint Sundardas in WHERE ARE YOU GOING. - A GUIDE TO THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY, published by Syda Foundation, 1989,
“The great Saint Sundardas wrote, “You have attained this human body through God’s grace. You cannot attain it repeatedly. This human body is a priceless jewel. Do not throw it away.”
Shantideva, a Buddhist master from the monastic University of Nalanda, India, also describes human birth as a rare gift. He says,
“These human leisure, opportunities, and faculties are very rare to obtain and easily lost.”
Siddha Avvai says,
“Rare indeed is to take a human birth, rarer than that is to be born with a perfect human form, sight, hearing and speech."
Indeed, human birth is a wonder, just like all of creation. It makes us wonder who was behind all this magnificence.
Shantideva says,
“Only as a human can you be devoted to God, the creator." He reminds us not to waste a rare opportunity to devote oneself to God.
Avvai, who pointed out that human birth was rare, adds,
"Amongst them, it is rare to see one who does austerities and charity. When one does austerities and charity, the gates to Godhead are opened.”
A Google search tells us that the current estimated world population is approximately 8.3 billion people. So if, according to these saints, human birth, which totals some 8.3 billion, is rare, just imagine what all the rest of creation would amount to. Is it a wonder then that Hindu texts mention that there are 8,400,000 species of life forms beginning with the aquatics, and culminating in the human being?
“All species are manifested in the early stages of cosmic creation, when the living entities (souls) are impregnated within material nature. These indestructible and eternal souls gradually evolve through the different species or types of material bodies, beginning with microbes and amoebas, rising through the fish, plants, insects, reptiles, birds and animals to the human and superhuman (Demigods) species. So the evolution process is really an evolution of consciousness.” [“ATMA – Reincarnation: The Soul's Secret Journey" – The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, The International Society For Krishna Consciousness.]
We learn from the net that,
"In Hindu scriptures, the phrase "84 lakh creations" (or 8.4 million life forms) refers to the 84 Lakh Yonis. This core concept dictates that a soul (Atman) goes through a cycle of 8.4 million different types of births and species (Samsara) before finally obtaining a precious human body. The precise numerical breakdown is most famously detailed in the Padma Purana (Srishti Khanda, 36.7-8)."
- Jalaj or Aquatics (water-based life) 900,000 (9 Lakh)
- Sthavar or Immovable life (plants, trees) 2,000,000 (20 Lakh)
- Krimi or Insects, reptiles, and microbes 1,100,000 (11 Lakh)
- Pakshi or Birds 1,000,000 (10 Lakh)
- Pashu or Terrestrial quadruped animals 3,000,000 (30 Lakh)
- Manavya or Humanoid/Human species 400,000 (4 Lakh)
“Having taken all these life forms to achieve his present state, that is, being born as grass, worms, trees, various animals, stones, rocks and pebbles, various creatures, Asuras and having exhausted myself in doing so, I found the truth to exist under your feet, and thus I entered your home, my Lord.”
We learn further that
“The different categories of material bodies (species) exist because there are millions of categories of material desires. These different life forms are nothing more than machines designed by the material energy to fulfill different material desires. Our entanglement in the material sphere is the result of an unending chain of actions and reactions developed in this and previous human lives. This is known in Sanskrit as Karma, a law of nature analogous to the modern scientific principle of action and reaction. In one human life, we can create sufficient Karma to keep ourselves entangled in the cycle of birth and death for thousands of lives. As human beings, we also have the rare opportunity to become spiritually enlightened with transcendental knowledge and the chance to break the endless cycle of reincarnation. It can take many lives, or you can do it in one lifetime.” [“ATMA – Reincarnation: The Soul's Secret Journey" – The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, The International Society For Krishna Consciousness.]
Swami Chidvilasananda writes that
"The Indian scriptures teach that earth is the place where you come to work out all your Karma, the consequences of your actions, both good and bad."
We learn from "ATMA, The Ultimate Antimaterial Particle" – The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. The International Society For Krishna Consciousness, that
“Only the human species, however is subject to the subtle but exact law, for only in the human form does one have advanced intelligence and freedom of choice. In lower-than-human life forms, much grosser forms of mind and body cover the soul; therefore, the living beings within such bodies are totally under the control of nature. Because beasts, microbes, insects, and plants do nothing more than automatically serve their instincts, they are not held responsible for their activities. They do not incur karmic reactions.”
And so it is that we are told that we are here to learn, experience, and evolve further. And so, being born as humans, we have that extra edge to serve all other creation in the best of our capacities, which brings us to Agathiyar's 5 Tenets for mankind.
- He says that man has to first and foremost understand his purpose in taking birth.
- With his purpose known, then, he should come to thank the divine creator or energy that brought forth his birth (through consultation with the lunar forefathers and their angelic hierarchies that co-exist with us down here). Living a purposeful, meaningful, and fruitful life, coupled with a sense of gratefulness, will then bring forth the showering of his blessings. These blessings and the efforts in carrying out his dictates result in the soul gaining strength, or Soul Power or Atma Balam. He asked that we show appreciation to the divine that gave us an opportunity to take this birth again to come to terms with it and sort out our lives.
- He asks that we then thank all the caretakers, both seen and unseen, in the present and the past.
4. There arises then an obligation on our part to "dutifully aid and help, the ongoing evolution of all co-existing human beings."
5. The final task is to extend this aid and help, towards "the ongoing evolution of all co-existing beings and entities, existing upon the lower levels of the evolutionary ladder, dutifully supporting the manifested matrix or prapanjam." [Summarized from Vashisht Vaid's post on his blog https://holysageagathiyar.com/])
In all these,
“The soul, known in Sanskrit as Atma, being far more subtle than matter, endures the death experience without being harmed or injured. Nor is it subject to the laws of birth, growth, and deterioration. One personal form of God is the super soul dwelling within the hearts of all living beings; witnessing every thought and action and awarding the living beings the result of their Karma, arranging for them to accept an appropriate physical body lifetime after lifetime.” ["ATMA, The Ultimate Antimaterial Particle" – The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. The International Society For Krishna Consciousness]
And so we are brought to Agathiyar's explanation of the Body (Udal), Breath (Uyir), and Soul (Atma) to us. Agathiyar had Mahindren sit with a pen and paper and take notes explaining the Udal, Uyir, and Atma.
The translation to the best of my ability follows.
The breath primarily drives our body. Thus, it is Uyir. Uyir is that which moves an otherwise motionless limb. Pranavayu is the reason for the embryo to conceive. This Pranavayu travels in the cells or Anukkal, within both the male and female; upon merging, and when all configuration is in place and conducive to take a primary material form, the Uyir Sakthi is given.
Udal, that is a combination of the Nun Uyir in certain proportions, present in the five materials, takes on the form of a zygote or Pindam in the womb. The Pancha Butham, namely water, earth, sky, air, and fire, are derived from both the parents' bodies to form the zygote in the following proportions. Earth 1/3, Water 4/3, Fire 5/6, Air 8/2 and Sky 1/8.
1/3 - One portion of earth from the female and three portions from the male.
4/3 - Four portions of water from the female and three from the male.
5/6 - Five portions of fire from the female and six from the male.
8/2 - Eight portions of air from the female and two from the male, and finally
1/8 - One portion of Ether from the female and eight from the male go towards making a healthy constitution.
These proportions are determined by Lord Brahma. When the proportions differ, there appear defects in the baby.
The Atma keeps both the Udal and Uyir under its control in a secretive, subtle manner. This subtlety stays from 1 to 5 Varagai with the child before it's veiled. I cannot tell you the reason for it to be veiled now. Nevertheless, the Atma will return unto him depending on his actions. When the Atma in you pulls you to a path and if you realize it, it appears as an Athirvu or vibration and disappears. If you practice extending this vibration in you, you shall merge in this vibration that is the Atma and arrive at Erai/ Agathiyan.
The Atma does not carry our karma, but the Atma shall help rectify our karma. When the karma is rectified, the Atma's seeking shall be hastened to the extent that man's daily seeking shall be exhausted. His entire seeking shall shift towards efforts on reaching me (Agathiyan).
This is today's lesson for you. I shall reveal further another day.
We are a composite of the Pindam or Udal or body, Vaasi or Uyir, or breath, and the Soul or Atma. The Pindam is made of Tattwas. So are the Uyir and Atma. The Pindam, made of the elements derived from the Pancha Maha Bhutam in a specific proportion, takes a form that begins to reside in the womb. The 5 elements are taken from each parent's body to shape the body of the fetus. If the proportions are compromised, complications appear in the fetus. Since this proportion is regulated by Lord Brahma, we know him as the creator of lives. It is interesting to recall the belief that in the initial months of a child taking birth, the child would speak to Lord Brahma, who is said to run through the chapters of our life here on this earth. Hence the reason for the child to cry or laugh. We suppose that good things said would bring joy and laughter, and bad things that are to take place bring crying and sadness.
The Pranavayu is the primary cause of the conception of a zygote into an embryo, fetus, and a child. The Pranavayu that flows in with the elements from both the parents moves to take a shape that has the potential to become life. Life is hence given to the embryo. Air is breathed into the Pindam. The breath that is Uyir takes the body as its vehicle to move and execute its actions. It primarily drives our body, moving the limbs that are otherwise motionless.
A new life begins. We learn the same from Genesis 2.7 that "Then God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."
Initiating and engineering this marvel of creation, and monitoring and supervising it, is the Soul or Atma. It designs the Body to a particular specification, size, shape, gender, and model according to its purpose in coming here. The Atma keeps both the Udal and Uyir under its grip. But the Atma soon loses its grip and hold on us between 1 and 5 Varahai, a time period used in the ancient days that I have yet to find an equivalent term or reference to present times. Agathiyar said he could not reveal the reason for the Atma to be veiled. Not everything is to be told, I understood, especially to me, as he often would jokingly say that I shall put it in my blog then. Some things are meant to remain a secret, just like his origin, though many have given many versions of his story. As for us, he told us that it was not important. What was important was the teachings and practices that he has given us to scale this mountain that is life, reach its peak, and plant our flag of achievement.
Once karma has cleared, the search to know the Atma intensifies. His search for his selfish gain loses its intensity. His seeking would be solely on knowing the Atma (Agathiyar) and reaching him.
If I had shared my external journey and the internal changes that came as a result of the internal journey, journeying through the Chakras, with others and my readers till now, Agathiyar has now tasked me to share my search and what I have come to know about the Atma (Atma Gnanam).
And so Agathiyar brings us to climb the mountain and attain the state of Light in his words, having me note them down. In bringing us his Guru Purnima message, Agathiyar paves the path for us to explore and return to him. He has simplified the journey in terms that we could grasp and travel along. In asking us, "Who is Agathiyan?" he says that we are him. He does not sit as a master or Lord presiding over his subjects, dictating and ruling. Now I understand why he asked me if that was what I desired when he came around asking each of us gathered at AVM what we wanted. I knew at that moment that this was not the ultimate. As I had nothing to ask, but as he stood waiting, I thought taking further births and coming back to serve him would be the thing to ask. Thinking we should ask for Gnanam, he told me that it was not gifted but shall be known when we travel the Chakras.
As I put together all that he told me, I got the full picture. We have to put in the initial effort required of Yoga, which would open the Muladra Chakra and activate the sleeping Kundalini to begin her journey to Svadishtana. He would take up from there, releasing the energy to move to the higher Chakras in a jiffy, cleansing and energizing them as the crown Chakra Sahasrara opens to receive the greater energies, bringing forth the dance of Siva Shakti in the crown and the subsequent flowering of the 1000-petaled lotus.
Continuing to read his memo, if we are this close as the nail and the thumb, he asked us then, why is it that we do not realize nor feel him? He has the answer for that too. It is because we have not attained the state of preparedness or readiness to realize him. We are so cooked up in these worldly affairs, either basking in the sun, boiling in the pan, or cooking over the fire, either happy or suffering or in pain. We are preoccupied with our desires or wants, or caught or tangled in the web that we have created for ourselves. Once battered and brawled over, torn and shredded, we step outside to find some time to recover. He says that once our soul attains this preparedness, we shall realize him as we turn a new leaf. The soul comes to show us the way out of this mess that we created, for he was with us all this while as a witness and the Watcher. Or rather, we are IT. The soul either brings us to a guru in the physical form or turns guru and leads us on. It charts and paves the path henceforth.
What is this path like that we need to take or travel on, which prepares us? It is the path of the Siddhas. Of course, Agathiyar would only show the path he had traveled to attain his present state. He told me in the Nadi, in giving me practices and tips, that he was only sharing what they had done, seen, and realized in these practices. It all begins with knowing the Siddhas and traveling to their places and abodes, witnessing the miracles, entering the states of bliss, and not forgetting to bring back these feelings and work on them further, nurturing these experiences, and keeping the flame alive and burning by nurturing it in our homes and our hearts.
Then Agathiyar says that the Siddha shall come down. If we had gone looking for them earlier, now they come down from their abode into our homes and hearts and lives. The soul becomes enlightened about its potential and its state and takes the dive. When we follow their directives or those of the soul, they shall walk with us, holding our hands. Just as Tavayogi told me, "Only now the true journey begins, my son," as we left for the caves and the jungles to explore the Siddhas, now another journey begins: that of exploring within us. This travel shall not be that of an external journey but of an internal journey. Yoga is the key to this travel within.
From Sariyai arriving at Kriyai, now they teach us Yogam. The journey within begins initially necessitating our efforts, but soon the awakened energies will take the reins and lead us on. All we need to do is watch, as Agathiyar told me. We shall stand witness to many unexplained mysteries and happenings. We shall encounter and see many things. It would be puzzling to us. It would be new to us too. Continuing this internal journey, we shall arrive at each Chakra and eventually see the cosmic dance of Thillai in Sahasrara, says Agathiyar. A 1000-petaled flower will keep on opening up continuously, as in the ripple in the waters. Arutjothi will come to reside here. The divine energy and its effulgence enter within. Just as the Kundalini, upon awakening and making its way up, traverses each Chakra purifying them, this effulgence travels down a similar and known path and brings on the shine and luminosity in these Chakras. Jothi Darisanam takes place where one sees the Light or Effulgence. The body takes on the same. Vibrations begin to emit within and around us and are felt by those tuned to receive and feel them around us. They shall in turn follow us, wanting a taste of it too. We attain the state of a Jeeva Mukta, one who has attained Mukti while living in the flesh. Henceforth we are no different from Agathiyan, and Agathiyan is no different from us. Agathiyar proclaims, "You are me, and I am you."
We have arrived at the final truth.
- In acknowledging that the right thing to ask was to come to their fold, or ThiruKootam, to attain the state of a Siddha, he then reveals the ultimate accomplishment in this travel - to become him, or rather.
- When he says that we all are Agathiyan, he is implying, as Buddha did, that we are all Buddhas. It is just that we are not aware of our present state.
- In revealing to me that we had known each other for ages and that I had slowly gained and accumulated Gnanam over these births, he says that he had stood by in this journey of self-discovery, having me learn from the experiences gained during this time.
- In proclaiming himself as Esan residing in us, he is the very JeevAtma.
- In asserting himself as the indwelling Lord, he is the ParamAtma.
- In asking me to let go of him, the merger happens. He brings me from Dvaita to Advaita.
- In asking me to shed my identity, that I am Shanmugam Avadaiyappa, he has me dissolve into the Param.
