Agathiyar himself had given mankind the 5 tenets to follow during the Tamil Sangam of the past. The first and foremost is to understand his or her purpose in taking birth. How do we come to know our purpose? The Nadi comes to a layman, seeker, or aspirant to reveal his purpose. The Guru comes to the disciple to reveal his purpose. The Sadhaka, in going within, learns his true purpose in taking birth. Those who, by some means, leave their body momentarily come to know their purpose too.
Agathiyar, through a calling, read out my Nadi. Supramania Swami, my first guru, told me about it just sitting with eyes closed. Then lately I came to know my purpose reading the "Soul Contract Reading". Further to these, the astrological predictions too have given a glimpse of what is in store.
These are the means by which man comes to know the causes for rebirth and realize the purpose and mission in coming again. To a layman, he is told he took birth because of his past karma or to fulfill unfulfilled past desires or settle some scores. To a seeker, aspirant, Sadhaka, or disciple, he is told that he has come to continue from where he had left off in a previous birth to know himself. A Gnani comes to herd us all into the pen.
If I started documenting my maiden travel to India in 2003, that led me to create several websites where I shared them, which later led to the start of this blog; I realized that Dr Krishnan's prediction, based on my horoscope in the nineties, that I shall write had come true.
Agathiyar has said so many things in my Nadi readings and later coming through devotees, about the developments taking place in me. When Agathiyar came in the form of the bronze statue in 2010, he told me that my soul shall reside in the statue and he shall pace the floor of my home. When he sent strangers over to my home and began to listen and heal some while he cracked the tough nuts among them, he pacified and gave my wife and me assurance, saying that he was only using me and my home to see them and help them and that in no way shall he or they intrude nor interfere in our lives. Then Lord Muruga wanted to play his game or lila too. He asked that I give way to him. When I stepped aside, the heavens practically came down and literally toppled many. It was pretty clear that the divine was using me and my venue to carry out certain things. Though they were beyond our comprehension in the beginning, it became apparent that they were untying the knots and opening up the hearts of selected individuals whom they summoned to my home. Now I am beginning to believe that the Siddhas never let go of those who had come under their scrutiny in past births. He said the same of me, telling me that we had known each other for crores of years. If I thought that I was the one documenting my life, the Siddhas were doing the same, keeping track of me. Agathiyar once told us in recent times that just as we spoke about them, they too speak about us. But all that sounded alien, and neither could I understand what was said then. So I never shared them nor played it up. Only when I experienced them could I relate to what he said in the Nadi and through his devotees and Tavayogi in passing. Then Agathiyar told me enough of writing about the other masters and his praise, and to write about the internal transformation that took place in me in 2022. It was only after Agathiyar asked that I share it with readers of this blog that I had the guts to write on these experiences here and share the Nadi readings on my YouTube channel. Even then, I had a psychologist walk up to me and put forward his hypothesis that I was hallucinating about the many conversations I had with Agathiyar. I told him to walk the path I did and find out for himself rather than use us as test subjects. It is true that things shall be revealed as we walk the path, just as we come across many things in taking a walk. And so many things were revealed as I journeyed on the path.
The revelations in my horoscope reading by Dr.Krishnan in 1996 did not quite materialize, as I came to find out from him that I carried curses from my past lives that stood in the way of receiving blessings and the rewards of my efforts, which was later endorsed by Agathiyar in my very first Nadi reading in 2002.
Agathiyar analysed my thumbprint that I forwarded to the Nadi reader and gave a prediction. Agathiyar described me, revealing what I did in the past. He gave me insight into what I would do with my life and beyond.
When I met my first guru in physical form, Supramania Swami, the following year, by just closing his eyes and connecting with the Prapanjam and its Akashic records, he gave me insight as to what was to take place in the future during the five majestic and magical hours I spent with him at his village home in Tiruvannamalai. The revelations from Supramania Swami without looking into the stars, charts, my hands, or questioning me. It tallied with what Agathiyar had told me in the Nadi.
Further revelations, as many as sixty-plus, came by in the Nadi progressively.
Agathiyar and Lord Murugan came through devotees in the absence of the Nadi readers who returned to India in the wake of the pandemic.
A chance reading of the revelation of Moses painted an exact picture of me and my purpose as a Spiritual Catalyst that Agathiyar came to endorse later. It was then I knew why he used me for his purpose. When Haary Roshaahn Yograj offered to give me a reading from the "Soul Contract Reading" on 4.2.2024, I found it truly fascinating. Though I had read up on and indulged in astrology and numerology in my early days of seeking to know, this was simply superb. Later, when I shared with Haary Agathiyar's sermon at the Tamil Sangam of the past, where Agathiyar gave mankind those 5 tenets to follow to him, after reading the first, which is knowing the purpose, till the 5th purpose, Haary messaged me, "Wow, uncle, number 5 is the same as what I explained: 'Once u worked thru it all, you begin to manifest your soul purpose by helping and giving back to humanity." How appropriate that Haary came along bringing this up, as he too believes it will be truly helpful to lost souls.
When there was joyous chaos amidst the astrologers, each going online to give predictions, and channels competing among themselves to pull viewers in by providing insights and predictions and revelations when the planet Jupiter, or Guru, transited recently, being a Kumbam Rasi, I learned why I was the way I was and why people behaved the way they did toward me, watching some of these videos.
Finally, I learned the same from other means of predictions that were in English. I came across them online that match all that took place and are to take place as foretold to me previously. A brief summary at https://youtu.be/82sRSQgHvMY and many other similar videos puts it all into perspective.
Aquarius — you were never just lucky; you were protected. Every storm you survived was proof of divine intervention. This is why God protects Aquarius — because your purpose is sacred, your truth revolutionary, and your light too powerful to be extinguished.
I am reminded of how the Chinese deities came to save my life as a child who was purging nonstop. My parents, who had lost two of my siblings under similar circumstances, reached out to the Chinese temple run in a home next door, just as in present times I had my family home turn into Agathiyar's home, Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia (AVM). All the Gods asked was that I be given in adoption to them, which my parents did, and I was saved. Since then, I have had the Gods looking over my shoulder. Agathiyar, too, who told me that we have known each other for crores of years, has come back for me again. He remembered me. He came to execute the following.
Calling me to read the Nadi, he called me to worship the Siddhas.
Later, with much help, guidance, and blessings from Tavayogi, they then bridged both worlds.
The Asana and Pranayama techniques that Tavayogi taught me in 2007, which Agathiyar says were a treasure, served to bridge my breath with that of the Cosmos and Universe, or Prapanjam, with assistance from Agathiyar and Ramalinga Adigal.
The merits of the forty years of Supramania Swami's Tavam, or austerities, gifted to me by him, skyrocketed my journey and climb just as the number six on the dice that most anticipate in any board game, or the ladder in the game of snake and ladder.
The gift of Yoga practice I received from Agathiyar that was taught to me by Tavayogi, and which I put into practice diligently and religiously, led to the opening of my Muladhara, almost instantly in 2007.
Agathiyar came in 2022 to break the bund that held back the energy, which had begun to stagnate and pond at Svadishtana,
Bringing Kundalini to travel the rest of the Chakras in two days and reach the Sahasrasa, the 1000-petaled lotus started to open and bloom, bringing immense bliss within.
Soon this bliss was felt in all that came within reach through my senses, and in reaching out and connecting with everything around me, and vice versa.
Agathiyar, in charting the journey and stating the phases and the stages to arrive at the state of Light as the Siddhas are in, had me take notes and share them with devotees attending the Guru Purnima Puja of 2024. I could see that he was relaying the journey I had taken to others.
In asking us, "Who is Agathiyan?" Agathiyar begins to explain the journey to discovering him and arrive at his state. He answers the question, saying, "You are. I am. True. We all are Agathiyan. The Jothi, or flame in us, is Agathiyan. He resides as the fire, flame, heat, and warmth in us. He is Esan. He is the Esan who resides within."
Then he asks us, "Why is it that we do not realize nor feel him?"
He answers that too. "It is because we have not attained the state of preparedness or readiness to realize him. Once our soul attains this state, we shall begin to realize him."
Then he continues with another question, "How can we attain this state of preparedness?" He answers that too.
"First, we have to travel this path. We need to travel to the places and abodes of the Siddhas, witness their miracles, enter the states of bliss, and bring back these feelings and work on them, nurturing them. The Siddha shall come down. When we follow their directives, they shall walk with us, holding our hands. This travel then shall not be that of an external but of an internal journey. Yoga is the key to this travel within. From Sariyai arriving at Kriyai, now they shall teach Yogam. The journey within shall begin. You shall witness happenings. You shall see many things. It would be puzzling to you. It would be new to you too. Continuing this internal journey, you shall arrive at each Chakra and eventually see the cosmic dance of Thillai in Sahasrara. A 1000-petaled flower will keep on opening up continuously. Arutjothi will come to reside here. Then its effulgence enters within, and just as the Kundalini, upon awakening, traverses each Chakra, purifying them, this effulgence brings on the shine and luminosity in them. Jothi Darisanam takes place when one sees the light or effulgence. The body takes on the same. Vibrations begin to emit within and around us and are felt by those tuned to receive and feel them around you. They shall follow you. You become a Jeeva Mukta, having attained Mukti while living in the flesh. Henceforth you are no different from Agathiyan, and Agathiyan is no different from you. You are me, and I am you."
And it all started after I came to worship him. He then brought me to Tavayogi. If he had Tavayogi teach me the rituals that served to get the attention of the Siddhas towards us, he had Tavayogi teach me to control Prana, the key to opening the door to the Muladhara and awakening the Kundalini to this journey of traveling the Chakras and arriving at Light or Jothi Darisanam. He then becomes a Jeevan Mukta.
In coming to walk on the path to Light, one cannot avoid stepping into the phase of Yoga, taking up some kind of techniques to progress further. Here is where danger lies. Danger stalks in this phase for the unaware and misguided. I too had to bear the cost of extreme and excruciating pain in my lower torso as a result of the internal movement of air (Prana) and its associated energies, which awakened Mother Kundalini. But I had Agathiyar with me. If Sariyai and Kriyai are instructional and can be followed even by children, without the need to understand what is done, and are rather harmless, Yoga is a matter of understanding the inner workings of this universe and Prapanjam that is both out and within. How do we explain this to simple folks and children?
Further revelation came via the video.
In this divine message, we reveal 15 reasons why God protects Aquarius — the chosen Water Bearer of truth. You are not ordinary; you are a vessel of higher wisdom sent to awaken humanity. Every betrayal, every isolation, every delay was Heaven’s way of preparing you. You weren’t being punished; you were being positioned. God hides you, shields you, and refines you — because your mission requires both rebellion and revelation.
It is said that Agathiyar arose from the Kumbam, an earthen or copper pot filled with water. In rituals, the Kumbam, a representation of a body, is tied decoratively with colored string to represent the nerves; a coconut is placed atop it that represents the head; mango leaves and silk cloth adorn the neck of the vessel; and scented water that represents the water/blood in us is placed inside the vessel, completing the Purnakumbam. Once completed, it represents the Bimbum, or a vessel or body bringing the deity that is invoked to come within, reside, witness, and bless the puja. Once sanctified through the ritual and prayer, the contents of the Purnakumbam are emptied on the statue of the deity, as in libation or Abhisegam, consecrating and energizing the idol, transmitting the energies and powers.
Both Tavayogi and Agathiyar had me go through this phase too, with Tavayogi asking me to carry out the fire ceremony or Homam and Agathiyar asking me to carry out libation or Abhishekam to his statue that he had me commission and made.
After having me actively engage in rituals and charity, Agathiyar then had me dissolve Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia (AVM) in 2019. He had others go their way while he had me go into inactivity, silence, and solitude, with the only company being my family, purportedly in preparation for a bigger mission, as we come to know from the video: "Their silence is preparation."
This video unveils the hidden meaning behind your spiritual protection — why your storms turned into awakenings and your pain into prophecy. Aquarius, your silence was never emptiness; it was sacred preparation. You are about to step into divine exposure, where everything meant to harm you now serves your ascension.
Although Agathiyar said he would not expose me, Tavayogi pushed me to speak at the opening of a new Peedham in Banting back then in 2007. Agathiyar himself, during a home puja some years back, asked me to address the devotees. Tavayogi, during his last and final visit to Malaysia in 2016, said people know me before knowing him and coming to him. Then Agathiyar had me take notes and share with those gathered during the Guru Purnima Puja of 2024. He then had Mahin prepare and ask me questions before the small group of devotees gathered during Chithirai Pornami Puja. All this was fine with him, as I was behind the limelight, blogging and vlogging from my home and addressing close devotees in homes. But when a popular gamer who found me online asked to start a podcast beginning with a session on Jeganatha Swamigal, Agathiyar did not want me to come before the camera. He pointed out that what I might say would lead to controversies. He knows me pretty well, for there are many weaknesses that need to be addressed. And so I had highlighted some in a recent post at https://agathiyarvanam.blogspot.com/2026/09/the-radical-sage-his-miracles.html
I have seen how easy it is to have people follow us. Any man or woman can start a following pretty easily. Murali, a colleague from my former office, had done his rounds at Bhogars Samadhi. He sat himself on the floor and idly began tapping the tiles. Later he saw others do the same, thinking it was a ritual and tradition. Tavayogi shared an instance when his sandals gave way. He kept them aside and brought his palms together, thanking them for serving him all those years. Taking a few steps up the stairs to the hilltop Palani temple, he looks back, and what does he see? Others who were climbing the hill were doing the same. The deity Karupanasamy, coming through a medium who channels him, reveals his origin. He is the son of Lord Rama, Kusa. As he was summoned to fight the Asuras down south, he took on the garb and form of how he is depicted today. But having beaten the Asuras in battle, he went back to his original state as a son of Rama. What we did was to capture the image he portrayed and took on to battle the Asuras, and have been worshipping him in this form since then. I believe this is the reason Agathiyar does not want us to dwell on the origins of things, including his story or Avatar. I fear dwelling further into the origins of beliefs, customs, and traditions. Ramalinga Adigal too came too soon for his time. As people could not accept his thoughts and ways, he left, saying he would be back. So too, I guess I have come back after the Namboothiri priests failed to accept the changes I supposedly brought about back then in a past birth. My actions earned their wrath and curses, I was told.
We follow the video further.
"They are the water bearer chosen to carry truth the world isn't ready to hear. Every betrayal was God's way of removing those who couldn't hold their light. Aquarius, you are hidden, not forgotten. Protected, not punished. Because when you rise, destinies shift. God pulled you away from noise so you could hear something no one else could. The voice of destiny calling your name. You were never built to fit into the patterns of ordinary souls. From birth, you carried the vibration of disruption, a sacred rebellion coded into your DNA. Aquarius, you are the storm that breaks stale traditions, the lightning that exposes false kings. God protects Aquarius because they are the water bearer of truth, the vessel through which divine revelation flows. When others drink from deception, Aquarius arrives to pour the clean water of clarity. They are the ones who say what others are afraid to admit. When your mission is to expose illusions, illusion will always call you the enemy. But here's the secret. Heaven kept from the world. Your rebellion isn't sin. It's sanctified. Every time you refuse to bow to systems that feed on fear, you are performing divine work. He made you untamed, so no one could cage the message you came here to deliver. You were never meant to be liked. You were meant to be heard. And sometimes the two cannot coexist. Every silence was set up. Every delay was designed. Because the truth you carry is not meant to be whispered. It's meant to be declared.
And so did Ramalinga Adigal declare the truth openly. This video that was uploaded some 11 months ago, comes as a booster shot in a timely manner.
And when the moment comes for you to pour out that truth, nothing and no one will be able to stop it. For now, heaven holds its breath as you remember what you were sent here to do. Because the ones who carry truth always face the storm before the calm. But Aquarius, your storm is ending. Something ancient begins to stir beneath the chaos. You've passed the first test.
Now, after posting some 4373 posts on this blog and some 879 videos on YouTube to date, since it has access to everything written, posted, and uploaded, I asked Google AI to tell me about Shanmugam Avadaiyappa, and this is what came up.
Shanmugam Avadaiyappa is a prominent Malaysian spiritual seeker, author, and digital creator dedicated to documenting and spreading the teachings of the Siddha tradition, specifically focusing on the revered sage Agathiyar (Agastya). Based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he previously worked with the Malaysian Ministry of Defence before transitioning into his lifelong commitment to spiritual work. He is best known globally among spiritual seekers as the founder of the long-running blogs Siddha Heartbeat and Siddha Heartbeat 2.0, where he logs his personal experiences, Nadi readings, and teachings on the Siddha path.
## Spiritual Journey and Gurus
Shanmugam’s spiritual awakening followed a unique trajectory. After years of traditional temple worship, he experienced a vivid dream where Lord Shiva instructed him to pause his practices. Following a 14-year hiatus, he felt a profound calling to explore the ancient paths of the Siddhas (enlightened masters). His path was shaped under the direct guidance of two major spiritual gurus: Supramania Swami and Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal (of the Agathiyar Vanam Kallar Ashram in India). Through them and detailed Nadi (ancient palm leaf astrology) readings, he established a home-based devotion practice focused on ritual fire ceremonies (Yagam), charity, yoga, and meditation.
[https://agathiyarvanam.blogspot.com](https://agathiyarvanam.blogspot.com/2025/09/i-am-blessed.html). In this reflective post titled "I AM BLESSED" from the blog Siddha Heartbeat (Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia), the author, Shanmugam Avadaiyappa, shares a message of deep gratitude looking back at his professional and spiritual life.
Key Highlights from the Post:
• A Fulfilling Retirement: He expresses gratitude for a wonderful 36-year career serving the government and shares his joy in spending his retirement years as a pensioner surrounded by his grandchildren.
• The Spiritual Calling: At the age of 43, his life path shifted when the sage Agathiyar called him through a Nadi reading, laying out his spiritual journey.
• Gratitude for His Gurus: He considers himself profoundly blessed to have been guided by two notable gurus:
• Supramania Swami of Tiruvannamalai, his very first guru, inheriting the spiritual merits of the master's 40 years of Tavam (austerities).
• Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal of Kallar Ashram, who traveled to Malaysia and gifted him the "treasures" of specialized Asana and Pranayama techniques.
The post captures a beautiful state of contentment, where the author feels complete satisfaction with his earthly milestones and the profound divine grace guiding his soul.
## Digital Presence and Media
To make the esoteric knowledge of the Siddhas accessible to a modern, global audience, Shanmugam maintains a heavy digital footprint:
* YouTube Channel: His official [Shanmugam Avadaiyappa YouTube Channel](https://www.youtube.com/c/ShanmugamAvadaiyappa) has gathered over 14,000 subscribers and features hundreds of videos discussing spiritual transformation, Agathiyar rituals, and interviews with seekers. This channel focuses on documenting and showcasing the spiritual journey on the Siddha Path. It shares content related to Agathiyar, Siddha philosophy, community prayers, puja rituals, and satsangs.
* Podcasts: He hosts Podomatic, sharing audio insights on Agathiyar Jayanthi and Guru Pujas.
## Core Philosophy
Shanmugam teaches that obtaining the grace of the Siddhas does not require complex, out-of-reach tasks. He emphasizes that simple, heartfelt domestic worship, acts of selfless compassion, and absolute surrender to a Guru are enough to clear heavy past karma and experience higher spiritual bliss (Sat Chitananda).
I was a film buff, having started in my school days. I listened to songs too. My daughter has taken up this passion too. She keeps herself informed about the local cinema and other movies through a group she is moving with.
These days, it has all changed for me. Not that I do not watch or listen, but the degree to which the movies and songs impact me is bewildering and puzzling.
These days, I can't bring myself to watch some movies for I end up crying and while I'm listening to songs and eating food, I have tears of joy and bliss roll down my cheeks.
If I were hearing them back then, now I have begun to feel the vibration for instance that of the string instruments. Just as tasting and eating reaches the inner core of my body and system, sight and hearing are now truly and literally touching my insides. Watching the following video just did that.
When I mysteriously received the Vasudeva mantra from Agathiyar, when I had no inkling about Siddhas back then in 2001, coming through Paramaguru Gopal Pillai, who was in his Samadhi, bringing me the message and mantra through my nephew, I looked up the significance of this mantra that was to change my life. It was given to clear the knots and blocks and to have me come to read the Nadi and meet my Guru Agathiyar a year later. Agathiyar, on his part, told me I shall meet my guru in physical form. And so it was that I "chanced" upon Supramania Swami on the pretext of charting my daughter's horoscope in 2003. Then Agathiyar brought Tavayogi to our shores in 2005. Agathiyar gave me a treasure in the form of Yoga Asanas and Pranayama techniques through Tavayogi that did wonders within. Diligently following it, I saw immense results that Agathiyar came to confirm of its happenings in the numerous Nadi readings I had during those years beginning in 2007. This further actuated my existing condition, where I could tune to the higher frequencies, especially in the following places.
I heard the walls of Agathiyar's sanctum at Agasthiyampalli resonate with the Pranavam AUM as I chanted the mantra.
I felt the walls of Dhakshanamurthy's shrine at the top of the flight of small steps at the Big temple in Tanjore resonate as I sat in the tight space before him, chanting the Pranavam AUM.
I felt these intense vibrations that overcame me, fell me, leaving me crying in ecstasy at the Dhakshanamurthy shrine in the corridors of the Madurai Meenakshi temple and again at his sannadhi at the Ekambareswarar temple.
The woods, forest, and jungles, too, must have resonated to a different tune for the 69-year-old Tavayogi, for it drove him to take big steps and walk ahead as if he was possessed, never turning back to see if I was keeping up.
The beat of drums, musical notes, and Kavadi Chindhu songs can bring those who are susceptible to the drum beats and vibrations to dance spontaneously, while in others, its vibrations could open up heaven and bring deities down to vocalize and bless those gathered. Underlying all these are vibrations.
If I teared up for no reason as I stepped into temples and holy spots in the past, I could engage with nature by just looking out of my window or stepping outdoors in recent times. The smell, sight, and touch of things were just too intense. Space resonated. The whole of nature resonated in wonder and beauty and sang a different song and a tune, only for my ears, just as certain miracles and sights were only for my eyes too. With the breeze blowing gently as in a Bansuri flute, the rustle of the leaves as in tapping a Kanjira, the flowing waters trying to keep up with the tala, or rhythmic cycle. Even when it rained, it sounded musical, with the thunderclaps in the distance adding drum beats to the melody of the rain.
Both Agathiyar and Ramalinga Adigal had helped me connect to the Prapanjam.
With many changes taking place, I can attest to what Henry Wei wrote in his book "The Guiding Light of Lao Tzu, Synergy Books International, that their scale of values changes radically; their attitude towards life changes too; their health improves; they have a sharper and deeper understanding and a clear spiritual vision.
If Agathiyar had spoken about the Kundalini as early as 2007, that it had awakened in a manner that they had expected and wished for, unfortunately (or as is always the case), the Kundalini energy that arose after the opening of the Muladhara stagnated at Svadishtana. It was only in 2022 that Agathiyar broke the bund and let her make her way through the rest of the chakras, reaching Sahasrara. Telling me that she would do her work and that I need not worry or interfere or carry out any further practice, he spoke about her in the latest reading last Sivarathri. He was pleased to see her arrive safely home eventually.
Although there was recurring and, at times, fresh pain and discomfort, which might be cause for fear in others, as I was given a clean slate of health by the doctors during a recent checkup, I understood that it was Kundalini doing her work.
Swami Muktananda sheds some light in his book "Kundalini - The Secret of Life," published by Siddha Yoga Publication, 1994. He writes that when the chakras of the sense organs are purified, the physical senses become sharpened and refined.
"On her journey to the Sahasrara, Kundalini passes through all the sense organs, purifying them and investing them with new powers. As Kundalini rises to the ocular center, she purifies the eyes. As the Kundalini purifies the sense of touch, one begins to feel thrilled of love through every pore and hair of the body. One becomes immersed in the joy of touch. When kundalini reaches the center of smell it purifies that, and one comes into direct contact with the essence of smell. When the Shakti moves to the auditory center, she purifies this too. When a shower of nectar is released and begins to fall dropping onto the root of the tongue, the taste buds become extremely refined. Even the simplest food is relished."
Swami Muktananda writes further,
"The basis of all disease and pain is the impurities that block the flow of Prana in the Nadis. These blockages are caused by imbalances and disorders in the three bodily humors - wind, bile, and phlegm. She (Kundalini) penetrates all 720 million Nadis, consumes all the old decaying fluids, then releases vital energy into them all. The Nadis become filled with Prana. It is only after the body has been purified that the Shakti can work with full force."
G. Valmikanathan, in his book "Makers of Indian Literature - Ramalingam", published by Sahitya Akademi (e-book at http://www.vallalar.org), in tracing Ramalinga Adigal’s journey on the Pathway to God, divides it into three portions: Journey on the Purgative way, Journey on the Illuminative way, and Journey on the Unitive way. I guess I am at the threshold of the third.
1. The purgative way is that part of the long path which one treads towards the Godhead and in which one purges oneself of all desires and attachments, of all imperfections, of all acts of commission and omission of shortcomings in renunciation, of shortcomings in the total love of God in the passion for the apprehension of the Godhead.
This saw me take responsibility for my past actions both in this birth and the previous one by carrying out remedies, doing Puja, and charity after Agathiyar looked into my past and revealed it in the Nadi.
2. The illuminative way is that part of the path, which comes after the purgative way, and in which one gains illumination, knowledge, and gnosis.
This was when Tavayogi, and after his demise, Agathiyar continued to shower learnings in real time by giving me experiences that he figured were vital for my soul's advancement.
After sailing through the previous two with Agathiyar and Ramalinga Adigal holding my hands, I am left free to soar the skies and sail the ocean. He has projected what was in store for me by giving me my latest Nadi reading last Sivarathri.
3. The unitive way is that part of the pathway in which the pilgrim marches on with buoyant and joyous steps, filled with hope and freed from doubt or misconception. The journey is characterized by a sense of urgency. The pilgrim, in this part of his journey, begins to walk fast, then breaks into a loping trot, finally, gallops on with increasing tempo towards the beckoning smile and the outstretched arms, and is soon locked in an eternal embrace with the beloved, the eternal being, the Godhead, the ground of all being. The journey on the unitive way is composed of several factors of experience. Recollection and quiet, contemplation, ecstasy and rapture, dark night of the soul, and unitive life.
Valmikanathan compares the experiences gained or endured in each of these stages,
Of these three sections of the pathway, the first is painful and dolorous; the second a strange mixture of sorrow and joy, the joy increasing in intensity as ignorance is slowly replaced by illumination; and the last section of sheer delight, of mounting bliss.
Indeed, as G. Valmikanathan wrote, the feeling is that of buoyancy and joy and delight and sheer bliss.
So I turned to all the literature I read and shared on this blog again, when I could feel the gentle vibration of the desk I was working on and the couch I am sitting on. I sense the floor of my home vibrating too as I pen these words. It is not as in earth-shattering moments or as in earthquakes, as we are told, but a gentle and subtle energy is felt. I guess this is what Mataji Sarojini Ammaiyar felt the day she and Tavayogi arrived to grace our home and watch us conduct the homam on a Thursday in 2016. She asked me the following day if I had felt the ground move or shake, as we carried out another puja and Homam in my nephew's home. No one felt it. Then Agathiyar, coming in the Nadi for a devotee on Saturday, revealed that it was true that only Mataji felt it and that the Siddhas arrived to sit in on our Puja.
Whenever Agathiyar comes within me, I can sense a surge of energy that is calm and soothing. But when he came at the shrine of Karupansamy through me in a relative's home the last time around, I felt a vibration within and moving outwards rapidly, making waveforms that extended beyond. I thought it was my body, shaking violently. But my daughters told me nothing of that sort happened. I was just standing there and later asked for a seat. Just like in terms of electricity for domestic, industrial, and other uses, I guess that they have connected me to another phase in the journey, that of connecting with the subtle vibrations around me. Recalling that Agathiyar asked me to share the bodily changes and internal transformation that at times jolted me, as in receiving electrical shocks, and at other times never captured my attention, I delved further into the experiences of the previous saints to get a better understanding of what was taking place. I understood that this Atma, or soul, is basically vibration. The intensity of this vibration varies from person to person. Man or Manithan, in working towards dropping his "I" moves to become Punithan, a state that Ramalinga Adigal mentions he attained, and that which Agathiyar recently told me I have reached, too. Man then progressively makes his way up to higher states of being. In doing so, his Atma's state of vibration intensifies. This was mentioned by Agathiyar in charting the journey from man to becoming a Jeevan Mukta. It is said that the whole village could sense the arrival of Gautama Buddha. Such was the intensity of his Atma. When a devotee asked Agathiyar what his true form was, he questioned her back, asking what she felt during puja and while doing charity. She told him it was a feeling of vibration or an Athirvu of an Unarvu. Agathiyar acknowledged himself as the very vibration that they felt in chanting his name, the vibration that everything around was emitting.
In the documentary series "Inner Worlds, Outer Worlds - Part 1 - Akasha," we are told that
"The ancient Vedic teachers taught Nada Brahma, the universe is vibration. The word Nada means sound or vibration. The vibratory field is at the root of all true spiritual experiences and scientific investigations. It is the same field of energy that saints, Buddhas, yogis, mystics, priests, shamans, and seers have observed by looking within themselves. It has been called Akasha, the Primordial Om, .. and a thousand other names throughout history...... In the ancient traditions of the East, it has been understood for thousands of years that all is vibration....You never see anything in its totality because it is made up of layer upon layer of vibration and it is constantly changing, exchanging information with Akasha.... everything is connected to the one vibratory source. ..."
A man seeking spiritual elevation and emancipation would first have to begin to work on dissolving his past karma and build positive merits and virtues to free himself from the grip of the gross and slowly bring his vibration to a state of purity, subtleness, and fineness. Annie Besant, in her talks on "The Laws of the Higher Life", Theosophical Publishing House, 1903, says,
The brain has to be changed, refined, improved, its connecting links fashioned and manufactured for the purposes of the expression of the higher consciousness... Here we see a consciousness that shapes bodies according to its needs, gradually refining them and bringing them under the control of the higher. Now making the mind steady, holding quiet the powers of the mind, the mind ceases to vibrate, and it becomes still - able to answer the vibrations coming from above".
These are "those who are in the front of evolution and of a subtler nature..." she adds.
As if to reenact the words of Rabindranath Tagore on this mystic union, "The Paramatman, the supreme soul, has himself chosen this soul of ours as his bride and the marriage has been completed", and just as Ramalinga Adigal composed a beautiful song about how his Lord had told him to prepare for this bridal marriage or mystic union an hour before the event took place, which I have included in the following video, Agathiyar had me call family and friends together and came personally through a devotee to carry out my 60th wedding on Guru Purnima of 2024.
G Vanmikanathan writes, "(Ramalinga ) Swaamikal gives expression to his amazement at the manner in which God entered his mind and took abode therein. Maanikkavaachakar too is oftentimes lost in wonderment at his good fortune in the Lord vouchsafing him a grace denied to others."
Henri Wei sums up beautifully, "In all these, man is understood as being capable of attaining union with the mysterious cosmic influence or cosmic spirit or divine being."
We are told that it is not a privilege for a select few that all are entitled to it. But each has to work out his or her Karma and take up the way, the method, and work on changing his fate by rewriting his destiny.
While many definitions are given about who a Siddha is and how to identify them, in current times anyone who trips and falls dead is laid in Samadhi and claimed as a Siddha. A good orator on the Siddhas is seen as a Siddha. A researcher in this field is seen as one too. Anyone reading about Siddhas can claim to be on the path. Mere reading about them gives a false impression that they are knowledgeable and know them and are one too. On the contrary one needs to put in the effort in walking the four phases, namely Sariyai, Kriyai, Yogam, and Gnanam. One does not turn overnight into a Siddha. As Agathiyar said of Gnanam, Siddhahood or joining their Thiru Kootam is not gifted, nor can one have automatic admission into their fold. It has to be earned by working one's way up, traveling through the Chakras. Similarly, the respect and state of a Siddha has to be earned. They have to admit us into their Thiru Kootam. One can never attain the state without their grace. Discipline, patience, perseverance, and finally surrender are the key words to attaining the state, besides their grace.
Tavayogi and Mataji beautifully sum up who is a true Siddha. Just like the Islamic call for prayer, both Tavayogi and Mataji have been calling many to the path of the Siddhas by holding the annual Guru Puja for Agathiyar that coincides with his Jayanthi and traveling to places to preach. In his absence, Mataji Sarojini Ammaiyar is following the tradition. She is currently in Malaysia. She can be reached at +6017 548 523 or +919842550987.
I am blessed to have come to the Siddhas and their worship. I am blessed to be guided by my gurus in physical form. I shall be blessed further if they take me in too. According to the last Nadi reading, Agathiyar has hinted at a high probability, while my first Guru, Supramania Swami, told me he saw me among the other Siddhas and Rishis on Annamalai Hill in Thiruvannamalai. I await the day I join Tavayogi, who Agathiyar says was doing his work in their realm, and Supramania Swami, whom Yogi Ramsuratkumar kept beside him, with eagerness.
Agathiyar had earlier defined the path to Light clearly by having me take notes a day before Guru Purnima of 2024.
What is considered taboo in Indian society, Agathiyar broke. When children coming of age are kept away, pronounced as not clean, and the oil lamp is not lit in the home, Agathiyar receives a teen who was menstruating and heals her by touch. He tells us that that was a natural thing that takes place and asks us why we shun and fear.
When oil lamps are not lit, the altar is covered, and even television screens are covered in the homes of the deceased, Agathiyar came to pronounce to all gathered, as the last rites for my 96-year-old mother were conducted, that Lord Siva had come amongst us.
He came when she was breathing her last in the hospital, hurrying us to bring her back home, for she had another birth awaiting her.
Lord Muruga comes into the home of a lady who has just delivered her child and lights the oil lamp when it is considered a period of taboo.
Agathiyar came to save a devotee lying in a coma in the hospital wards, telling him in the Nadi that he was giving him his breath.
He came as a gust of wind and saved the life of a devotee's mother as the doctors gathered around her hospital bed, trying to save her.
Lord Muruga came as the mantra that was chanted by the caretaker of the temple in the corridors of the hospital, after an atheist father who took it as a chore to sweep the temple grounds while his son prayed in the temple was pronouced death and was awaiting to be moved to the mortuary.
He came with Tirumoolar to help raise the platelet levels when my daughter was admitted for Dengue Fever.
When Lord Krishna asked seekers to learn from Agathiyar on fasting, Agathiyar was seen to cook, eat, and feed others. Returning to Lord Krishna he reveals to them that Agathiyar eats for all of creation, feeding all the elements within their bodies. In revealing the history of his temple at Agasthiyampalli to Siddha physician Dr.V.N. Jayapalan, Agathiyar tells the story of his coming as a stranger during a great famine and feeding King Kuberan and his subjects from a make shift shed on the fringes of the empire, quenching their thirst and hunger and healing their ailments too.
Agathiyar, in coming to us, tells us that he works miracles through food. He assured my other daughter, who told him that she could not take charge and control what her children were served by others once they were out of her sight, that he would change the meat to something else.
Agathiyar recently told a devotee of some thirty years to consume animal protein for her body needed it. Some years back, Bogar asked a devotee to take fish protein, citing that her body needed it after just feeling and watching her pulse. True enough, a senior colleague on assignment in Sabah was admitted to the wards. Being a vegetarian, the doctors asked that at least he take fish, for he needed the protein to recover.
Lord Muruga, in asking me for a temple in the Nadi, answered a question that crept into my mind: "Why do you need so many temples?" He told me that I shall do it differently.
The end was already made known to us by Tavayogi at the beginning of this journey; it was just that we could not comprehend it back then. Today we fully understand it after having those experiences. He had autographed my copy of his book, mentioning 31.5.2007, which, when translated, would mean, "God resides in your heart; that is the starting point of the journey, and the end too."
If it is said that Lord Muruga took flight on his peacock to gain Gnanam, battling Surapadman and turning into the mendicant Supramaniar, his sibling, Lord Ganesa, sat at his father's feet and gained it instantly. It resonates with the koan "First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is."
During the Tang Dynasty, the Chinese Ch’an master Qingyuan Weixin famously wrote:
“Before I had studied Ch’an for thirty years, I saw mountains as mountains, and rivers as rivers. When I arrived at a more intimate knowledge, I came to the point where I saw that mountains are not mountains, and rivers are not rivers. But now that I have got its very substance, I am at rest. For it’s just that I see mountains once again as mountains, and rivers once again as rivers.” (Source: https://tricycle.org/magazine/first-there-mountain-then-there-no-mountain/)
First we saw the mountain and began to climb it. Once atop its peak, where did the mountain go? We looked outside for the divine, seeing him as separate from us in the beginning, and after traveling the hills and dales, seeking and searching for him, we realized that he was all along with us, in us, and we in him.
The last Nadi reading days after Sivarathri was an eye-opener. Agathiyar, who charted my destiny, concluded it too, bringing it to a close. I wonder if there is another phase awaiting.
Looking back now, what an unimaginable and unbelievable journey it has been for me. I was going about my life, going to work, and caring for my family, when Agathiyar entered my life through a Nadi reading. In the Nadi reading, Agathiyar spoke about Karma, something that was as old as creation itself but that was altogether new to me back then. I used to wonder in later years what was the very first mistake I made, or good, for that matter, or the very first desire I carried or the desire of another that brought on this endless chain of births; for Agathiyar, recently, in coming through a devotee, tells me that we have known each other crores of years. I forgot, but he remembers. So he came back again to redeem me.
Asking me to come to the worship of the Siddhas was new to one who, once upon a time, was a temple-going person who prayed to all the deities at home too, until what I thought was injustice meted out on devotees by these gods had me question if god was indeed compassionate, kind, and loving. Lord Shiva coming in a dream had me shelve those questions for later. That day came after 14 years, when my nephew knocked on my door, bringing me a message. I found out later that it was from Agathiyar, who had Gopal Pillai pass it to me. Gopal Pillai, who had passed on, was his Paramaguru. I was given the Vasudeva Mantra that cleared the knots and blocks and paved the way for me to meet my guru Agathiyar and two wonderful gurus in physical form later. Calling to read the Nadi, Agathiyar explained it all and changed my life for good, or rather, brought me on track to follow what was destined for me by the Siddhas, rather than have fate dictate my life.
All it took was to listen to them and follow their dictates. In surrendering to them, they held my hand and led me places and had me carry out numerous tasks that worked miracles in shaping me and my thoughts, my perspective, and my opinions, besides seeing them actually perform mind-boggling miracles that I saw, heard, touched, felt, and came to know.
The above video sums up the journey, beginning with the revelation in the Gnana Kaandam that initially was the road map and blueprint that I had to pursue and ends with the fruits of the journey, bringing a good ending to my story.
As of now, the first phase of this journey has come to an end. I wonder if I need to step into the next or leave things as they are. I shall await Agathiyar's decision.
Continuing from the previous posts, now that we understand that this birth is a precious gift and to be born a human is a great and very rare gift, we must now turn our attention towards making this birth into a meaningful one. Agathiyar, in addressing the Tamil Sangam of the past, where he gave mankind the 5 Tenets, through his memo to us, in recent times, has made known the purpose. We have to remember and ponder over the blessedness that we humans have gained, for only the human has the chance to become free from the cycle of birth and death, and no other organism or living form. As Shantideva mentioned, we should not fail to make use of this human birth or human form to find ways to break this cycle of birth and death and to achieve liberation. We have to appreciate this special gift of birth and take steps to attain liberation in this very birth, for we might not get another chance to be born as a human for years to come. We could descend into the lower species, where it would then not be possible to worship God and attain God-realization and enlightenment.
In the book YOGI RAMSURATKUMAR - THE MYSTERY OF BECOMING GOD by Olga Ammann, published by Yogi Ramsuratkumar Bhavan, Mauritius, 2008, the author states,
“The meaning and the aim of existence must be the search for the divine. One that enables the individual to take the supreme decision of his or her life: to leave all behind and go in search of God.”
Does leaving all behind and going in search of God bring us to him then?
Swami Muktananda explains in KUNDALINI - THE SECRET OF LIFE, Siddha Yoga Publication, 1994,
“If he tries to discover a path by himself, he will simply go around in circles, walking for a long time but never reaching his goal. The Guru has found everything you are seeking; that which you want has become the Guru’s wealth. The difference between you and the Guru is that you are the seed and the Guru is the full-grown tree; you are the beginning, and he is the end.”
In Hans-Ulrich Rieker’s translation and commentary of the HATHA YOGA PRADIPIKA OF SVATMARAMA, The Aquarian Press, 1992, B. K. S. Iyengar writes,
“.. .the real goal of a yogi is to become a Siddha. A Siddha, a person in possession of Siddhis, has developed powers that can readily be called supernatural. There are eight Siddhis, the highest of which is nirvana, the great liberation. The Siddhis are signposts on his way to the final goal, liberation.”
So the Siddhis are only the numerous acknowledgements that we get along the way to have us know that we are on the right track, but these should not be our prime goal, for we shall get stuck in it, fall victim to the attention, praise, honor, etc. that comes with it, but walk past these to reach the final Siddhi that of Liberation. If these are considered Siddhis that arise partly as a result of our efforts and partly through divine grace, Ramalinga Adigal says otherwise: all these are Mukthis that number 300 means and ways; Siddhi is the experience of merging.
So the Siddhas are known to break away from the norm. I guess this is the reason Lord Muruga, in asking me to build him a temple too, besides Agathiyar wanting one too, told me that I shall do it differently. Bharathi too broke away from tradition and earned the wrath of his community. Agathiyar tells me that I had erand the wrath of the Namboothri priests in my last birth as I broe awy from tradition. Following Lord Murugan's call to be different, I proposed to two heads of mission to simplify the rituals in their ashrams, but both feared that they would earn the wrtah of their gurus and others.
In QUIET MIND, FEARLESS HEART - THE TAOIST PATH THROUGH STRESS & SPIRITUALITY, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Hoboken, New Jersey, 2005, Brian Luke Seaward quotes Teilhard De Chardin,
“We are not humans having a spiritual experience. Instead, we are spirits having a human experience. …..earthly existence is enshrouded in many veils of illusion. It is a brave soul on a noble adventure who attempts to lift these veils. .... If you recognize that you are indeed a spirit on a human path, then every situation that you encounter will be a learning experience. This is how consciousness evolves. The drive that inspires the human journey is a desire to have this view of life - a clearer understanding of life’s mystery and role or purpose in it.”
During the days of my search, many painted a gruesome picture of the Siddhas having broken up couples and families, where Siddhas will roast us in the burning fire, etc. These took me by surprise, for I was always of the notion earlier that Gods, and now Siddhas, would only do good, as they are known to be compassionate, kind, and loving. If in the 80s I was confronted by similar happenings in the lives of devotees who seemed to be victimized by the deities, and after heeding the call from Lord Siva coming in a dream asking me to shelve my questions to a later date, I found out about Karma and its doings from the Siddhas coming in my Nadi reading some 14 years later. I began to accept their fate. Then, walking into the path of the Siddhas, I was in disbelief again. I set out to prove these critics wrong. Today I stand as an example to them. My family is intact, safe, and well because of the grace and love of the Siddhas. When a couple of devotees were ridiculed by their family for carrying out the ritual worship of the Siddhas in their home, telling them that they shall bring down the wrath of the Gods, I told the devotees to bring whoever has bad mouth these practices to my home and have them see for themselves how we live.
The Siddhas do not have us give up our family and responsibilities and adorn the saffron robe and walk out, though some might have taken it up after getting a calling. But then we always have a choice and the free will to choose. What the Siddhas eventually bring about is having us walk away from holding on to our old perspective of things, and interpretation of happenings and events. What the Siddhas eventually bring about is having us walk away from the attention, respect, posts, authority, power, etc. that comes along either with the desires we fed, or walk away from what we are gifted with as a result of our good deeds and merits in a past birth, or walk away from the numerous tasks given when the lesson ends. What the Siddhas eventually bring about is have us walk away from our old self of holding on to ideas, belongings, and attachments without the need to leave the home and family, and without the need to take on a new name and a new attire. This is true renunciation, or letting go, or staying detached and unattached, or Turavaram. It is all to put our agitated minds at rest and our weeping hearts at peace, bringing an inner calm. This is true Spiritual Birth as in the koan, "First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is", and so it is with this prapanjam.
For it’s just that I see mountains once again as mountains, and rivers once again as rivers.” (Source: https://tricycle.org/magazine/first-there-mountain-then-there-no-mountain/),
Shantideva writes on yearning for liberation.
“The soul yearns to be free, and through our becoming aware of this we undergo what the mystics call awakening, where we then begin to center our life on a high spiritual ideal. A new aspiration is born in the soul, which frees the need of a larger draught of air, a more expansive horizon, and which desires direct contact with the indefinite existence. In order to attain the highest illumination we all have to pass through a spiritual birth."
The back pain that recurred days ago, which I wrote about, has disappeared just as it came on. The expelling of the three doshas, namely phlegm, bile, and wind, whenever I lay down to sleep, has stopped. The results of the blood sample that I gave a week back during my regular medical checkup turned out to be fabulous. I am deeply grateful to Agathiyar for the health and wealth he continues to shower on me.
I choose to write what is relayed to me by Agathiyar through Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal, or when he comes through the Nadi readings, and in recent times through his devotees, and at times when he dictates what he has to say to either Mahindren or me. And so, many times did he lament about the sad state of his devotees who had lost sight of why they came to the path, or had no idea where it would take them. Some stop short of reading about the Siddhas, while others continue to debate on them endlessly. To those who had merely worshiped him for years, some as many as thirty-plus years, he told them that they had wasted those precious years, not keeping fit nor having upgraded themselves to the next stages and phases.
Agathiyar, coming as the guru, brings the Light within and without, dispels the darkness by driving away ignorance, had me take notes on the ideal Siddha journey, giving a simple account and run-up to the moment of merging with Light, that which we came for and have been trying endlessly to attain throughout the crores of births we have taken thus far.
Many a saint has often mentioned the human birth as the highest amongst all births. Adi Sankara says,
“Only through God’s grace may we obtain the three rarest gifts: Human birth; the longing for liberation; and discipleship to an illumined teacher.”
Swami Chidvilasananda in INNER TREASURES, a Siddha Yoga Publication, 1995, mirrors Sankara’s thoughts.
“This is where you have the opportunity to learn the greatest lessons and ascend to the highest awareness. Even celestial beings want to take birth in this place. It is the work of the Saints to awaken people from Samsara, the world of the wandering, from this Chakra, this wheel, the cycle of birth and death.’’
It is said that God told Ramalinga Adigal to build the Satya Gnana Sabai as a place of learning for the celestial beings.
Swami Chidvilasananda's guru, Swami Muktananda, quotes Saint Sundardas in WHERE ARE YOU GOING. - A GUIDE TO THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY, published by Syda Foundation, 1989,
“The great Saint Sundardas wrote, “You have attained this human body through God’s grace. You cannot attain it repeatedly. This human body is a priceless jewel. Do not throw it away.”
Shantideva, a Buddhist master from the monastic University of Nalanda, India, also describes human birth as a rare gift. He says,
“These human leisure, opportunities, and faculties are very rare to obtain and easily lost.”
Siddha Avvai says,
“Rare indeed is to take a human birth, rarer than that is to be born with a perfect human form, sight, hearing and speech."
Indeed, human birth is a wonder, just like all of creation. It makes us wonder who was behind all this magnificence.
Shantideva says,
“Only as a human can you be devoted to God, the creator." He reminds us not to waste a rare opportunity to devote oneself to God.
Avvai, who pointed out that human birth was rare, adds,
"Amongst them, it is rare to see one who does austerities and charity. When one does austerities and charity, the gates to Godhead are opened.”
A Google search tells us that the current estimated world population is approximately 8.3 billion people. So if, according to these saints, human birth, which totals some 8.3 billion, is rare, just imagine what all the rest of creation would amount to. Is it a wonder then that Hindu texts mention that there are 8,400,000 species of life forms beginning with the aquatics, and culminating in the human being?
“All species are manifested in the early stages of cosmic creation, when the living entities (souls) are impregnated within material nature. These indestructible and eternal souls gradually evolve through the different species or types of material bodies, beginning with microbes and amoebas, rising through the fish, plants, insects, reptiles, birds and animals to the human and superhuman (Demigods) species. So the evolution process is really an evolution of consciousness.” [“ATMA – Reincarnation: The Soul's Secret Journey" – The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, The International Society For Krishna Consciousness.]
We learn from the net that,
"In Hindu scriptures, the phrase "84 lakh creations" (or 8.4 million life forms) refers to the 84 Lakh Yonis. This core concept dictates that a soul (Atman) goes through a cycle of 8.4 million different types of births and species (Samsara) before finally obtaining a precious human body. The precise numerical breakdown is most famously detailed in the Padma Purana (Srishti Khanda, 36.7-8)."
Jalaj or Aquatics (water-based life) 900,000 (9 Lakh)
Sthavar or Immovable life (plants, trees) 2,000,000 (20 Lakh)
Krimi or Insects, reptiles, and microbes 1,100,000 (11 Lakh)
Pakshi or Birds 1,000,000 (10 Lakh)
Pashu or Terrestrial quadruped animals 3,000,000 (30 Lakh)
Manavya or Humanoid/Human species 400,000 (4 Lakh)
Hence, the total earthly life forms make up 8,400,000 (84 Lakh).
Manikkavasagar amply expounds in his THIRUVACHAKAM-SHIVAPURAANAM that
“Having taken all these life forms to achieve his present state, that is, being born as grass, worms, trees, various animals, stones, rocks and pebbles, various creatures, Asuras and having exhausted myself in doing so, I found the truth to exist under your feet, and thus I entered your home, my Lord.”
We learn further that
“The different categories of material bodies (species) exist because there are millions of categories of material desires. These different life forms are nothing more than machines designed by the material energy to fulfill different material desires. Our entanglement in the material sphere is the result of an unending chain of actions and reactions developed in this and previous human lives. This is known in Sanskrit as Karma, a law of nature analogous to the modern scientific principle of action and reaction. In one human life, we can create sufficient Karma to keep ourselves entangled in the cycle of birth and death for thousands of lives. As human beings, we also have the rare opportunity to become spiritually enlightened with transcendental knowledge and the chance to break the endless cycle of reincarnation. It can take many lives, or you can do it in one lifetime.” [“ATMA – Reincarnation: The Soul's Secret Journey" – The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, The International Society For Krishna Consciousness.]
Swami Chidvilasananda writes that
"The Indian scriptures teach that earth is the place where you come to work out all your Karma, the consequences of your actions, both good and bad."
We learn from "ATMA, The Ultimate Antimaterial Particle" – The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. The International Society For Krishna Consciousness, that
“Only the human species, however is subject to the subtle but exact law, for only in the human form does one have advanced intelligence and freedom of choice. In lower-than-human life forms, much grosser forms of mind and body cover the soul; therefore, the living beings within such bodies are totally under the control of nature. Because beasts, microbes, insects, and plants do nothing more than automatically serve their instincts, they are not held responsible for their activities. They do not incur karmic reactions.”
And so it is that we are told that we are here to learn, experience, and evolve further. And so, being born as humans, we have that extra edge to serve all other creation in the best of our capacities, which brings us to Agathiyar's 5 Tenets for mankind.
He says that man has to first and foremost understand his purpose in taking birth.
With his purpose known, then, he should come to thank the divine creator or energy that brought forth his birth (through consultation with the lunar forefathers and their angelic hierarchies that co-exist with us down here). Living a purposeful, meaningful, and fruitful life, coupled with a sense of gratefulness, will then bring forth the showering of his blessings. These blessings and the efforts in carrying out his dictates result in the soul gaining strength, or Soul Power or Atma Balam. He asked that we show appreciation to the divine that gave us an opportunity to take this birth again to come to terms with it and sort out our lives.
He asks that we then thank all the caretakers, both seen and unseen, in the present and the past.
Then,
4. There arises then an obligation on our part to "dutifully aid and help, the ongoing evolution of all co-existing human beings."
5. The final task is to extend this aid and help, towards "the ongoing evolution of all co-existing beings and entities, existing upon the lower levels of the evolutionary ladder, dutifully supporting the manifested matrix or prapanjam." [Summarized from Vashisht Vaid's post on his blog https://holysageagathiyar.com/])
In all these,
“The soul, known in Sanskrit as Atma, being far more subtle than matter, endures the death experience without being harmed or injured. Nor is it subject to the laws of birth, growth, and deterioration. One personal form of God is the super soul dwelling within the hearts of all living beings; witnessing every thought and action and awarding the living beings the result of their Karma, arranging for them to accept an appropriate physical body lifetime after lifetime.” ["ATMA, The Ultimate Antimaterial Particle" – The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. The International Society For Krishna Consciousness]
And so we are brought to Agathiyar's explanation of the Body (Udal), Breath (Uyir), and Soul (Atma) to us. Agathiyar had Mahindren sit with a pen and paper and take notes explaining the Udal, Uyir, and Atma.

The translation to the best of my ability follows.
The breath primarily drives our body. Thus, it is Uyir. Uyir is that which moves an otherwise motionless limb. Pranavayu is the reason for the embryo to conceive. This Pranavayu travels in the cells or Anukkal, within both the male and female; upon merging, and when all configuration is in place and conducive to take a primary material form, the Uyir Sakthi is given.
Udal, that is a combination of the Nun Uyir in certain proportions, present in the five materials, takes on the form of a zygote or Pindam in the womb. The Pancha Butham, namely water, earth, sky, air, and fire, are derived from both the parents' bodies to form the zygote in the following proportions. Earth 1/3, Water 4/3, Fire 5/6, Air 8/2 and Sky 1/8.
1/3 - One portion of earth from the female and three portions from the male.
4/3 - Four portions of water from the female and three from the male.
5/6 - Five portions of fire from the female and six from the male.
8/2 - Eight portions of air from the female and two from the male, and finally
1/8 - One portion of Ether from the female and eight from the male go towards making a healthy constitution.
These proportions are determined by Lord Brahma. When the proportions differ, there appear defects in the baby.
The Atma keeps both the Udal and Uyir under its control in a secretive, subtle manner. This subtlety stays from 1 to 5 Varagai with the child before it's veiled. I cannot tell you the reason for it to be veiled now. Nevertheless, the Atma will return unto him depending on his actions. When the Atma in you pulls you to a path and if you realize it, it appears as an Athirvu or vibration and disappears. If you practice extending this vibration in you, you shall merge in this vibration that is the Atma and arrive at Erai/ Agathiyan.
The Atma does not carry our karma, but the Atma shall help rectify our karma. When the karma is rectified, the Atma's seeking shall be hastened to the extent that man's daily seeking shall be exhausted. His entire seeking shall shift towards efforts on reaching me (Agathiyan).
This is today's lesson for you. I shall reveal further another day.
We are a composite of the Pindam or Udal or body, Vaasi or Uyir, or breath, and the Soul or Atma. The Pindam is made of Tattwas. So are the Uyir and Atma. The Pindam, made of the elements derived from the Pancha Maha Bhutam in a specific proportion, takes a form that begins to reside in the womb. The 5 elements are taken from each parent's body to shape the body of the fetus. If the proportions are compromised, complications appear in the fetus. Since this proportion is regulated by Lord Brahma, we know him as the creator of lives. It is interesting to recall the belief that in the initial months of a child taking birth, the child would speak to Lord Brahma, who is said to run through the chapters of our life here on this earth. Hence the reason for the child to cry or laugh. We suppose that good things said would bring joy and laughter, and bad things that are to take place bring crying and sadness.
The Pranavayu is the primary cause of the conception of a zygote into an embryo, fetus, and a child. The Pranavayu that flows in with the elements from both the parents moves to take a shape that has the potential to become life. Life is hence given to the embryo. Air is breathed into the Pindam. The breath that is Uyir takes the body as its vehicle to move and execute its actions. It primarily drives our body, moving the limbs that are otherwise motionless.
A new life begins. We learn the same from Genesis 2.7 that "Then God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."
Initiating and engineering this marvel of creation, and monitoring and supervising it, is the Soul or Atma. It designs the Body to a particular specification, size, shape, gender, and model according to its purpose in coming here. The Atma keeps both the Udal and Uyir under its grip. But the Atma soon loses its grip and hold on us between 1 and 5 Varahai, a time period used in the ancient days that I have yet to find an equivalent term or reference to present times. Agathiyar said he could not reveal the reason for the Atma to be veiled. Not everything is to be told, I understood, especially to me, as he often would jokingly say that I shall put it in my blog then. Some things are meant to remain a secret, just like his origin, though many have given many versions of his story. As for us, he told us that it was not important. What was important was the teachings and practices that he has given us to scale this mountain that is life, reach its peak, and plant our flag of achievement.
Once karma has cleared, the search to know the Atma intensifies. His search for his selfish gain loses its intensity. His seeking would be solely on knowing the Atma (Agathiyar) and reaching him.
If I had shared my external journey and the internal changes that came as a result of the internal journey, journeying through the Chakras, with others and my readers till now, Agathiyar has now tasked me to share my search and what I have come to know about the Atma (Atma Gnanam).
And so Agathiyar brings us to climb the mountain and attain the state of Light in his words, having me note them down. In bringing us his Guru Purnima message, Agathiyar paves the path for us to explore and return to him. He has simplified the journey in terms that we could grasp and travel along. In asking us, "Who is Agathiyan?" he says that we are him. He does not sit as a master or Lord presiding over his subjects, dictating and ruling. Now I understand why he asked me if that was what I desired when he came around asking each of us gathered at AVM what we wanted. I knew at that moment that this was not the ultimate. As I had nothing to ask, but as he stood waiting, I thought taking further births and coming back to serve him would be the thing to ask. Thinking we should ask for Gnanam, he told me that it was not gifted but shall be known when we travel the Chakras.
As I put together all that he told me, I got the full picture. We have to put in the initial effort required of Yoga, which would open the Muladra Chakra and activate the sleeping Kundalini to begin her journey to Svadishtana. He would take up from there, releasing the energy to move to the higher Chakras in a jiffy, cleansing and energizing them as the crown Chakra Sahasrara opens to receive the greater energies, bringing forth the dance of Siva Shakti in the crown and the subsequent flowering of the 1000-petaled lotus.
Continuing to read his memo, if we are this close as the nail and the thumb, he asked us then, why is it that we do not realize nor feel him? He has the answer for that too. It is because we have not attained the state of preparedness or readiness to realize him. We are so cooked up in these worldly affairs, either basking in the sun, boiling in the pan, or cooking over the fire, either happy or suffering or in pain. We are preoccupied with our desires or wants, or caught or tangled in the web that we have created for ourselves. Once battered and brawled over, torn and shredded, we step outside to find some time to recover. He says that once our soul attains this preparedness, we shall realize him as we turn a new leaf. The soul comes to show us the way out of this mess that we created, for he was with us all this while as a witness and the Watcher. Or rather, we are IT. The soul either brings us to a guru in the physical form or turns guru and leads us on. It charts and paves the path henceforth.
What is this path like that we need to take or travel on, which prepares us? It is the path of the Siddhas. Of course, Agathiyar would only show the path he had traveled to attain his present state. He told me in the Nadi, in giving me practices and tips, that he was only sharing what they had done, seen, and realized in these practices. It all begins with knowing the Siddhas and traveling to their places and abodes, witnessing the miracles, entering the states of bliss, and not forgetting to bring back these feelings and work on them further, nurturing these experiences, and keeping the flame alive and burning by nurturing it in our homes and our hearts.
Then Agathiyar says that the Siddha shall come down. If we had gone looking for them earlier, now they come down from their abode into our homes and hearts and lives. The soul becomes enlightened about its potential and its state and takes the dive. When we follow their directives or those of the soul, they shall walk with us, holding our hands. Just as Tavayogi told me, "Only now the true journey begins, my son," as we left for the caves and the jungles to explore the Siddhas, now another journey begins: that of exploring within us. This travel shall not be that of an external journey but of an internal journey. Yoga is the key to this travel within.
From Sariyai arriving at Kriyai, now they teach us Yogam. The journey within begins initially necessitating our efforts, but soon the awakened energies will take the reins and lead us on. All we need to do is watch, as Agathiyar told me. We shall stand witness to many unexplained mysteries and happenings. We shall encounter and see many things. It would be puzzling to us. It would be new to us too. Continuing this internal journey, we shall arrive at each Chakra and eventually see the cosmic dance of Thillai in Sahasrara, says Agathiyar. A 1000-petaled flower will keep on opening up continuously, as in the ripple in the waters. Arutjothi will come to reside here. The divine energy and its effulgence enter within. Just as the Kundalini, upon awakening and making its way up, traverses each Chakra purifying them, this effulgence travels down a similar and known path and brings on the shine and luminosity in these Chakras. Jothi Darisanam takes place where one sees the Light or Effulgence. The body takes on the same. Vibrations begin to emit within and around us and are felt by those tuned to receive and feel them around us. They shall in turn follow us, wanting a taste of it too. We attain the state of a Jeeva Mukta, one who has attained Mukti while living in the flesh. Henceforth we are no different from Agathiyan, and Agathiyan is no different from us. Agathiyar proclaims, "You are me, and I am you."
We have arrived at the final truth.
In acknowledging that the right thing to ask was to come to their fold, or ThiruKootam, to attain the state of a Siddha, he then reveals the ultimate accomplishment in this travel - to become him, or rather.
When he says that we all are Agathiyan, he is implying, as Buddha did, that we are all Buddhas. It is just that we are not aware of our present state.
In revealing to me that we had known each other for ages and that I had slowly gained and accumulated Gnanam over these births, he says that he had stood by in this journey of self-discovery, having me learn from the experiences gained during this time.
In proclaiming himself as Esan residing in us, he is the very JeevAtma.
In asserting himself as the indwelling Lord, he is the ParamAtma.
In asking me to let go of him, the merger happens. He brings me from Dvaita to Advaita.
In asking me to shed my identity, that I am Shanmugam Avadaiyappa, he has me dissolve into the Param.
