Just as we are always told to aim for the highest, Ramalinga Adigal did not settle for a place at the feet of Shiva but instead asked to be placed with the new moon or crescent that adorns his tresses. Tavayogi asked us to worship Agathiyar. Agathiyar asked to worship Ma. Ma asked to conduct daily abhisegam. Today she has shown us to Father Siva. It is said that Erai is a thief; he steals your heart; he comes in the middle or dead of night; he comes without announcing; he comes when least expected; he consumes you; he leaves you desperate and yearning for him; his thought never leaves us after that. Siva has stolen my heart tonight too. 

Many saints realized their devotion or bakti slowly evolve or grow to that of love or kadhal for Erai. Swami Saravanananda describes devotion as the thawing and melting of the mind (intellect) while love to mean the thawing and melting of the soul (heart).

Swami Saravanananda has beautifully captured Ramalinga Adigal's experiences from his Thiruarutpa in his English translation of the Agaval published by the Ramalinga Mission, Madras. 
... this body has to be first purified of all its dross and veils and made a fit receptacle to receive the divine radiance. With the aid of this radiance, the illusory human body can be transformed into a pure body (sudha degam) followed by the body of sound (pranava degam) and finally into a Gnostic body (gnana degam). 
Swami Saravanananda reminds us again as all the saints have, that "this body alone is considered as the proper vehicle for the attainment of mukti. One is not assured that he might obtain another human birth. Man by losing his physical frame, has forfeited the experience of sachidananda. Leading a life based on exterior ephemeral state is no life at all; it is mere existence."

Let us come out of a life of mere existence to fully live this life, transforming both our body and thoughts towards the higher states. For the ball to start rolling, we need to go down on our knees and beg for Erai's mercy, to pardon us for all our wrong doings and pray that he absolves all our karma. We need to take a resolution to change a new leaf and walk the path of the saints before us. 

Ramalinga Adigal tells us that it is achievable in one life time and proofed it.
The aim of human life is to realize and gain the divine felicity in this world itself while there is yet time. Those who have attained the acme of creation, the human birth, must hasten to understand and achieve while there is yet time, the delightful bliss of the soul.
The atmas or souls in the cosmic space is said to be of three types namely: immature, transitional, and mature. 
Due to the differences in the levels of will, wisdom and action (karma) that are found in the cosmic space, atmas have come to possess threefold bodies (karmic, pranava, gnana).
The aspirant pours out his soul to the lord and prays fervently to mitigate their sufferings (other beings). Slowly, his body through the intensity of concentration of the mind begins to generate the flame of tapas, known as psychic heat.... Slowly the quantity of psychic heat is increased due to intense meditation and concentration on the universal effulgence.
What is this transformation that is spoken of so often all about? Swami Saravanananda quotes from the Agaval (verses 1449‐ 1473) on this transformation that took place in Ramalinga Adigal.
The skin has become supple; nerves function intermittently; bones have become soft and the tendons have lost their grip over the muscles; blood has congealed and semen has condensed into a solid ball; petals of the brain blossom and elixir fills up the body system; face glows and breath becomes peaceful; hairs rise on end and tears well up; mouth utters the name of the lord and the sound of OM pours into the ears; body becomes cooled and hands rise up in salutations; mind ripens and melts and wisdom fills up the mental frame; the ever pervading feeling has come to stay; egoism vanishes and the soul attains bliss; impurities get destroyed and purity alone remains; illusory tendency vanishes and a longing for god’s grace swells up…
"Thus the process of transmutation being completed and perfected, the aspirant becomes the possessor of a golden body. This body with shrunken skin has become ever youthful", an affirmation made by Ramalingam himself.
It has shaken off sleep, hunger, thirst, diseases from the system. It has been filled with divine light; it has developed immunity from all kinds of destructive forces.
Swami Saravanananda explains further, 
At whatever age the aspirant gains illumination or the effulgence enters in him or emanates from within, some remarkable changes take place in the body frame. The divine light seems to change the very structure of the DNA’s and RNA’s in each and every cell of the body, with the result, that they seem to function in the opposite direction.
Swami Saravanananda says the whole body of Ramalinga Adigal was soaked with divine bliss and every cell of his body began to enjoy the felicity. It is said that each cell of the body possesses partial consciousness and rudiments of intelligence. The divine light that passes into the cell makes them fully awakened into perfect or near perfect intelligence. The result is the perfect immortal physical body. Ramalinga Adigal compares the process of illumination of the cells with marriage with the compassionate celestial lady, hence the reason the saints fell in love with Erai.

MORE LESSONS FROM THE SIDDHAS

"I wake up and rush to get to work. While at work I am pressured to deliver. There are datelines set and my rice bowl is dependent on whether I deliver. Returning home late, I can only watch my child having gone to sleep after asking her mum numerous times when is daddy coming home." This is the standard lamentation from a family man these days. The routine starts again the next day for him. He laments that there is never time to be with the family or be with friends or just sit around and enjoy the moment.

Knowing that man would work till his last breath, there is a time when he is compulsorily retired or laid off. But yet he takes on another job giving reasons that he is bored or needs the money. I opted to retire early three years back, otherwise I would be retiring this September as I enter my sixtieth year. I did not want to die while at the desk. Agathiyar too gave me his blessings to devout more time to him. But I am always confronted with people who asked me what work am I doing even after telling them that I had retired. Do they really understand the meaning of retirement, I wonder? Old age is a reminder to wind up and take things easy. This is the time for us to do whatever we had wanted and cherished before but were never able to do or found the time for it. This is the time to take up that hobby you had always wanted to engage in. This is the time for you to step out on those tours you had eyed on but never could go on.

Finding more time with my family and Agathiyar now, he sends people around to my home. They are then drawn to share their problems with us. We have seen a multitude of people with all sorts of problems arrive at our doorstep. Agathiyar brings them here. The idea in sharing their stories here is not to belittle or ridicule them but to learn from their experience what to do and what not to do. Among them are those who lived beyond their means and end up in debt. They come to the siddhas expecting their financial problems to be solved overnight; expecting all their problems to go away immediately; and expecting their debts to be cleared by Erai. Erai does not settled your debts! Erai does not undo what you have knowingly done!

Tavayogi was always of the opinion that we should not participate in another's problems. Their problems are self made and they have to go through it. Tavayogi never touches on other's karma. His mantra was always: Realize that your sufferings are the result of your own doings or vinai or karma, and his solution was only one: He would point them to the worship of siddhas, never personally showing a way to reduce or come out of it. Neither does he get involved with them personally. Just as the doctor sees a patient; diagnoses him and prescribes a relief for him; without getting personal, so do we need to be professional in whatever we do.

Tavayogi reprimanded me once for taking on the problems of others. I told him that I took a beating from someone for advising her husband who had poured his problems to us. She accused me that the Arutperunjhoti mantra audio CD I gave him thinking it would bring some solace and peace to him, had triggered something in him that made him act weirdly and like a lunatic. On consulting Tavayogi to know where I went wrong, he told me to send all those with problems to Agathiyar, rather then listen to them and think of a solution for them. He stopped us from giving solutions to their problems. It was a bitter pill to swallow but we learnt a lesson; that in event we decide to listen, we have to have both parties present to get a true picture. At times they tend to hide some portions of the story giving only a vague picture. We draw up a solution based on what is told. Then it would not apply when they open up a little more. Then there are others who go on and on with their problems even after we ask them to drop them and move on. These are the times I wonder how could Tavayogi sit so patiently and listen to them.

When a staunch devotee of Agathiyar introduced others for a nadi reading he sat in as an interpreter too. He would then volunteer to bring them to carry out their parikaram or remedies, both in Malaysia and India too. There were times when he would go out of the way and scout and look for things of a rare nature to fulfill the remedy mentioned in their nadi. He would run the search and wear himself out and his finance too from doing so. He continued to help others despite facing numerous problems in his life. Then Agathiyar revealed the reason for his troubles and problems. He had gone overboard in helping others in relieving their karma. As a result he had taken on their karma to a certain extent. Agathiyar makes us understand that the reason remedies are given is that they want the affected party to put in the effort to nullify their karma. By putting the effort in searching and seeking the said items by themselves and executing what is told for them, they will tend to exhaust or burn out a significant portion of their said karma in the process. If someone else does them a favour by providing everything and laying them before them, it does not bring the desired results to the affected party concerned and in fact can harm the one who is executing it all for them.

When someone was told that she would have the gift to heal others by Agathiyar, he immediately added that she should have to remind herself continuously that she was only acting as a tool and medium and not give in to her ego thinking that she was healing. If ego sets in the karma of those she heals shall befall on her, warned Agathiyar. Similarly masters who heal others were told the same, to bring the divine down to heal and not think that they are healing their patients. They are also asked to charge an amount for their treatment so that it satisfies the conditions of taking on another's karma. Doctors especially are asked to light a lamp at the temples to discharge themselves of any karma that lurks as a result of they attending to their patients.

When he was knocked down from his bike by a bus while on the way to Methupalaiyam, it took Tavayogi a couple of months to recover fully. I was angry with Agathiyar for not preventing the accident. But Tavayogi consoled me and very humbly told me that it was his karma and added that he had to pay the price of adorning the role of a guru. He hinted that he had to take on the karma of the devotees who submitted and surrendered to him their problems as they fell at his feet touching it.

When Agathiyar came to our shores he told devotees to light a lamp and place their worries at his feet. Initially we made the earth lamps or agal vilakku, ghee and wick available to them to light it. Based on the above encounters now, we realized that it defeats the purpose if we were to supply all the goods and the devotees just lighted it. We now expect them to bring these along if they intended to light a lamp at ATM, which would be purposeful and meaningful. Similarly if someone is asked to conduct a puja for the siddhas at ATM today, we do not prepare the stage for them where they just attend to participate, as we previously did, but instead get them involved from the very start, right from purchasing the items for the Homam, Abhisegam and Alangaram to coming early to prepare, arrange and execute the entire puja with the only contribution from us that is giving guidance in telling them what to do.

Looking back at all the above incidents, today I understand pretty well why Tavayogi cautioned us then. I tend to realize the extend that one's karma and how it affects others too.

When I met Tavayogi for the very first time in Malaysia, he decided to initiate me. He called over a  devotee and staff at the local chapter of his peedham in Batu Caves and told him his desire and asked to make the necessary arrangements. The aid assured him that everything would be taken care off and said that I need only be present. That evening Tavayogi initiated my wife and me and six others. I did not spend even a single dime nor did I gift Tavayogi with the dakshinai (any donation, fees or honorarium given to a cause, monastery, temple, spiritual guide or after a ritual), that one needed to give a guru. I was so naive then neither having any earlier experience with any gurus and in these matters, nor did those around me highlight these things.

Since Agathiyar had told me to come back for a reading at 45, I informed Tavayogi that I was to seek the nadi as I had turned 45 then. He referred me to Nadi Nool Aasan T.Ramesh. In that reading Agathiyar told me to receive an initiation from Tavayogi that night itself. I was surprised and so was Tavayogi when I related the matter to him. He had just initiated me earlier. So I asked him to wait a while at the local peedham while I rushed to buy all the required items to offer to a guru before an initiation as listed by Agathiyar in the nadi. It was quite late at night and the shops were closing. I had to rush into several shops before they closed to gather the various items. Then I had to drive to Batu Caves. Tavayogi who waited for me, initiated me again although he was equally puzzled. Today I understand the reason to go back to him for the initiation. I needed to purchase the items that are a gift of appreciation or gurudakshina, from my pocket, which I failed to present to him earlier.

Although I happened to drop in on my first guru Supramania Swami unexpectedly and quite by chance, I wanted very much to meet Thavathiru Rengaraja Desigar, But in both occasions I walked in with bare hands, carrying no gifts, as I did not know of the protocols involved in meeting gurus. Neither did their aid advice me accordingly. And so it was that I walked in for an initiation from Tavayogi without any preparation or contribution on my part too.

When I made my way to Ongarakudil and walked in on Thavathiru Rengaraja Desigar, after asking for his blessings several times, and as there was no response from him, his aid told me to speak loudly which I did. Finally he turned to me and told me coming there itself was a blessing! What did he mean? How am I to understand his reply? I came back troubled that he did not bless me. This incident was bugging me for years since I had very much wanted to meet him as his publications and videos were my very first guide, when there was hardly any material on the worship of siddhas back then. Agathiyar answered my questions and worry after several years: if I was an unwanted guest; if I had strayed in without prior invitation; if I was not invited at all; and if I was not supposed to be there in the first place? Agathiyar told me I had made my way to him without knowing his full potential and his status then. I had been disrespectful by not knowing the protocol. Agathiyar asked me to go again and that I would be accepted. But I never made that journey to Turaiyur again, since I told Agathiyar I already had him (Agathiyar) for a guru. There will not be another guru in my life from now on except Agathiyar.

Agathiyar reveals and explains in a Jeeva Nadi reading by Sri Ganeshan of Tanjavur, the auspiciousness of hills, why the temples are located on them and how the karma of devotees are lessened by visiting these places. The hills are generally known for the extensive range of herbs and medicinal plants. A plant on the lowlands would possess 100 times its potential in the highlands. The reason for erecting temples and places of worship in the hills was solely to cater for the health and well being of devotees. Climbing the hills once a day itself is an Abhyasam or good practice. The hike up a hill will benefit man's 22,000 nerves. This is the physical benefit one gains in climbing hills. Speaking about the subtle aspect of this practice, Agathiyar says certain forms of karma is reduced with continuous worship and meditation at these places of worship. The level of the hardship one goes through in scaling these hills and mountains, is proportionate to the extent and reduction of one's karma. These places of worship are where one's past sins and wrongdoings, the forefathers wrongdoings, and sabam or curse is reduced speedily.

WHEN THE DOORS OPEN WIDE

There is a hive of activity going on all around us both in this visible plane and in the invisible plane of Erai, the many worlds we are told. This is the dance of Lord Siva. It all shall end when Siva stops his dance.



When asked to come to the path of the siddhas, Agathiyar opened up many doors one after the other, just as we have seen shown in the devotional movies. He had Nadi Nool Aasan Sentilkumar conduct a puja for the siddhas and their nool, the nadi. I picked up the rendition of the names of the siddhas from here, my first introduction to the siddhas by name. I took back this simple prayer and began chanting their names in my home during prayer, having purchased a picture of Agathiyar at the same time from Sivabalan. Soon I purchased all the books I could on the siddhas to better understand each of the name listed in the Siddhar Potri Thoguppu or compilation of siddha names. 

When I came to this path, there were hardly any guides to the worship of the siddhas except for those materials printed and distributed by the Agathiyar Sanmarga Sangam based in Ongarakudil. These served as a guideline showing me how to pray to the siddhas. Armed with the knowledge of witnessing a simple siddha puja conducted by Sentilkumar earlier and Agathiyar's picture I began closely followed the numerous publications and talks of Thavathiru Rengaraja Desigar. This devotion to his works brought me to seek and meet up with him during my maiden journey to India the following year. 

Agathiyar then introduced me to Supramania Swami of Tiruvannamalai at the end of my pilgrimage. I got involved in building a temple in this holy town through Supramania Swami that was mysteriously and abruptly stopped by the siddhas for reasons known only to them. Another venture to build a temple continued when I was introduced to my second guru Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal of Kallar. This ashram/temple saw its completion in 2016. 

Learning by watching Tavayogi go about the rituals of performing the Yagam and siddha worship, I followed them back at home, but in a smaller scale. Agathiyar sent a number of aspirants on the path to join me in prayer. 

Soon I began to experiment with various approaches to these rituals. Searching for more materials and songs on the siddhas, and extracting appropriate songs that I could include in my prayers, brought me to compile a compendium "The Book of Praise to the Siddhas." These songs were adopted and sang during our puja that would last some two hours, which included a homam, and abhisegam. As time went by the need to reduce the hours spent on rituals and begin to just sit in silence was felt within. Soon Lord Muruga, Agathiyar, Ma and Aiya  told the same too and showed us to do things differently. Today we have managed to reduce the time spent on rituals to 40 mins on festive days and just a mere 15 minutes for nitya or daily puja. 

Today I understand that devotion has to go through several phases too. I understand now why Tavayogi questioned us "How long are you going to be stuck here?" He asked us to move on to gnana from bakti. When he autographed his book "Andamum Pindamum" for me he wrote the following words, "Aandavan Uraigindra Edam Thangal Ullam, Athuve Payanathin Thodakkamum, Mudivum" when translated meant, "Erai lives in your heart, from where the journey starts and ends too."


When the time is right for us to awake, Erai residing in our hearts, taps it and awakens us from our long sleep of ignorance and indifference to Erai, and his creation. When we take notice of him, the first veil is removed. We then begin to take notice of all of his creation. We become amazed at it and begin to appreciate life that is given to us. When we become grateful and appreciate his world, the second veil is removed. From there on he comes to remove all the subsequent veils, bringing us closer to his kingdom.

If we have evolved slowly in all ways, including the methodology of worship and rituals, we have  also begun to understand that the approach towards Erai too has evolved, that from a servant, to a son, and to that of a companion as spoken in the various sacred text. The guru who led us, walking briskly ahead of us, calling out to us to hurry and catch up with him, is walking alongside us these days, whispering the sacred into our ears. Bringing us to do rituals and simple tapas, he made us carry out our social responsibilities besides fulfilling the family duties too. 

He brought fresh ideas to an otherwise age old practices. He shot down impractical procedures. He gave us the courage to break out of the norm and explore the infinite. Just as Tavayogi told me that the spirit cannot be caged, and that it has to be set free, we at ATM do not conform to any idea or code of practice but look towards ways to implement fresh ideas and ways to execute the task given and on hand. There is never a boring moment instead each prayer session goes with the flow, ready to accept any changes at any moment. Similarly our charity programs and the means to carry them out too change with time and experience. 

Rather then dictate to us the sacred texts, Tavayogi and Agathiyar brought us to the ground to experience for ourselves first hand. As they stood aside and observed we went about the given task diligently. As is said experience is the greatest teacher, we soon learnt things and brought appropriate changes, removing the knots and tangles for a smooth journey. We began to explore new frontiers. It has been an exciting and interesting journey, of exploration and understanding. This journey shall continue.

GURU BAKTHI

Agathiyar invited me to the path of the siddhas through a reading in the nadi. I took up his invitation. He invited me to go over to numerous temples in India. It took me a year to finalize the journey. I set foot in India, home of my late father Avadaiyappa Chettiar of Kilsevalpatti for the very first time in 2003. Agathiyar showed me Supramania Swami from Tiruvannamalai. A bond was cemented. Agathiyar showed me Tavayogi Thangarasan Adigal of Kallar Ashram. Another bond was cemented. While Supramania Swami showed me his guru Yogi Ramsuratkumar, Tavayogi showed me his guru Agathiyar. Having both my gurus and their lineage behind me I walked the path with pride just as Agathiyar wanted me to.

He was there for us in each of our endeavor, blessing all our programs and events. He found no fault with our arrangements but rather did enhance them. From writing this blog to streaming my home puja or siddha worship; from hosting his annual Jayanthi celebrations and Guru Puja in my home to performing the Siddha puja in temples; he backed us and motivated us.

Changing his mind and remaining at my home instead of gracing the Jegathguru Sri Raghavendra Mrithiga Brindavanam Kinta, today he has open a portal to the other world. He sits majestically at ATM blessing all his children. He started them on charity and rituals too. Through Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia (AVM), an individual's home prayer, he brought his other children to gather and conduct worship to the siddhas. From AVM he moved us up the spiritual ladder giving due recognition by honoring this humble home as Agathiyar Tapovanam Malaysia (ATM). 

Persatuan Teman Setia (PTS) was registered to form an umbrella that brought beneath it the rituals at ATM and charitable activities of Thondu Seivom (TS) and Amudha Surabhi (AS). Bala Chandran with his committee shall look after the affairs of PTS, while Mahindran shall look after Agathiyar at ATM while Suren shall continue to contribute towards writing this blog. 

These contributions of ours towards humanity and prapanjam as directed by Agathiyar shall continue. Meanwhile we await news from Agathiyar to move to a new and more spacious premise where we shall engage in a bigger task as hinted by Agathiyar. 

THE UNSEEN 2

We are not alone. You can go to the far reaches of the world - there is life around you. You can shut yourself in a monastery - there is life outside its high walls. You can bury yourself in samadhi - there is life in the earth too. It is amazing - the whole world is full of life. There is never a moment of silence or stillness or non motion. If we think that we are alone then we are mistaken. The mistake we make is to equate life with fellow humans. We think alone-ness is the absence of people. Even if there are none with us, there are the plants, tiny creatures and organisms living around us. There are the minute creatures in the air around us. Then there is the spirit of nature and the spirit of goodness. Take in a deep breath and you shall know that you are not alone. Agathiyar is in the breath. Our forefathers are in the air around us. Take a deep breath and you will feel refreshed. Take a walk outdoors and you return energized. The entire world is beaming with life.

We who are earth bound, are told that the earth continues to spin on its axis. The planets keep spinning and moving in their path without our knowledge. The sun and moon give us their darshan each day without failure. 

We have read of novels on expeditions to the center of the earth. We have seen movies on it. Agathiyar tells us that there is life within the earth's crust going about with their daily life.  

Similarly without us realizing, life goes on within us too. The cells are replenished each moment. The body sheds its old skin and is renewed without our knowledge. The alimentary canal and digestive system all work to keep us fit and alive without a day off, without asking much from us, going about their job without a grumble. The remnants of the food taken several hours ago is being ejected out of our system and body even at this moment, efficiently. The breath moves in and out without our consent. 

This is the unseen world around us, within it; above us and within us that is changing every second.

Then there is another world also invisible to us. When Tavayogi brought me on the journey exploring the abodes of the siddhas, he would look towards the sky and turn around to me telling me the siddhas were showering flower petals on us. As we walked the rough terrain he would tell me that they were ushering us. He would pick up certain aromas and smell and mention that they were around. But I never could see, smell nor sense their presence then.

When I was waiting for Nadi Nool Aasan Ramesh to read me my Nadi, I was overcome by emotion and love for Agathiyar who sat at his altar. Ramesh then brings in the Nadi from the adjacent room and begins to read it to me. In his opening words, Agathiyar tells me he saw me shed tears while watching him. During another time I garlanded him at the Sri Sakti Karpaga Vinayagar temple before making my way for the reading. Agathiyar tells me I garlanded him before coming over. After a long lecture on anger management he places me in a couple of rather difficult situations immediately after the reading and waited to see my reaction and how I would respond. Off course I failed the test and blew my top. My family looks up into the sky asking if there were close circuit television cameras fitted in the sky that was linked to the other world. Do we need more proof of the existence of the siddhas and an invisible plane running parallel to us? 

Then there is the world of the dead and spirits, again invisible to most of us. We are not alone. We do not die. Although it looks like we have left the physical body after death, we go on living. We go on living in others memories. We go on living in others. We continue to see through others eyes. We speak through others. We live our desires through our children. Dhanvanthri told me that Tavayogi lives in us. Even if he has left his mortal frame there is never a day that we do not talk about him in our home at ATM. He had captured our hearts and souls. He continues to live with us in spirit. He continues to lead us on this journey. If he had taken me physically on a journey of all the siddha abodes when he was around, today he brings me to the subtle world of the siddhas. He went ahead and opened the door to the portal that connects to the other world, bringing many visitations by saints. With him come all the Gods and Goddesses too. 

We are limited in vision both physically and mentally. Here is where we need the siddhas to open up our eyes and our minds. Opening our eyes we shall see the unseen, that which is not visible by the naked eyes. Opening our mind we shall acquire the much spoken about arivu that makes us see things from a different perspective, a different angle, a different plane and dimension.

Scientist have made new discoveries with the aid of technology. Technology has helped them bring the unseen world to us. Today we have a better understanding of how things work. Medical science like other sciences has seen a drastic jump in its comprehension and understanding and approach of diseases with the advent and improvement in technology. When my little toddler grand daughter refused to place her right foot on the ground and cried in pain when she took a step forward, we were worried if she had sprained her ankle or worst still had broken her shin bone. But there was no visible signs of a fracture nor a sprain. Her leg looked very normal but as she was in pain each time she moved to take a step, we rushed her to the hospital to have an x-ray taken. Asking to see a child pediatric we were referred to an orthopedic doctor instead. The dear doctor on the onset recognized the problem, asking if she had had a fever recently. With the advent of the internet our work has been simplified too. My work in writing this blog has been made easy too. There is the spell checker that corrects the spelling and even suggest appropriate words. There are the many books made available on the net that help with the references. 

But technology  in the hands of bad hats has lured victims unknowingly into all kinds of scams losing large amounts of money. My wife once answered an unknown call that cost us a some. It was a call from the Ascension island in the south Atlantic Ocean. The local telephone service provider washed their hands off as she had taken the call, although it was silent on the other end. Today we are extra cautious in answering unknown calls. This is where again we need the help of the siddhas to keep all these dangers at bay. Then we have to be cautious of those who step before us seeking directions or aid and con us or relieve us of our money and jewelry.

Strangers come to ATM for a solution to their problems. Listening to them we realize that their problems is all of their own making. Wrong judgement; wrong investments; wrong moves; falling prey to greed; standing as guarantors to others; these are some of the many reasons that lead to their current situation. Then I have to tell them off that Erai does not settle their debts. They will have too. Some are the only sole bread winner while the rest of the family live on him/her. I need to tell them that each and every member in the family needs to find themselves a job to jointly help settle their debts. Others having gone numerous places and seeing no results they come to be healed and expect a miracle to take place immediately.  But the siddhas are not shamans or medicine man, who drive away spirits and heal instantaneously. Neither do the siddhas do mass healing. They study the subject; his behavior and attitude; his faith and belief; his commitment to what is to be said; and most importantly his past karma. The subject might need to engage in certain prayers themselves. Only after this due process of evaluation is done, will they summit to cure or heal. Then they always tell them to be patient. The tangle and the knots that we have created isn't easily untied.

The saints have always included in their prayers to Erai, asking to be save guarded from both seen and unseen dangers. These prayers are recognizable in the numerous songs that serve as protection or a force field known as kavasam. Besides the fear they had of the wild animals in the jungles where they seeked refuge etc, we would have to include more present day dangers of the nature of IT and commercial crimes too. This is where we need to bring the divine into all aspects of our lifes. Seek their protection against dubious people and cheats.

Let us take the hand of the divine as we walk the journey. We need not become a saint. We need not become a legend. We can remain an ordinary person, yet carry out Erai's work. We need not adorn the garb of a mendicant or monk, yet serve Erai's children. We need not take the stage and preach Erai's word but put them into action through all the small and little ways and means as we walk this journey. That is sufficient.

THE UNSEEN 1

Knowing that there’s so much around us we can see forever changes our understanding of the world, and by looking at unseen worlds, we recognize that we exist in the living universe, and this new perspective creates wonder and inspires us to become explorers in our own backyards. After seeing the above videos and photos https://www.pinterest.com/pin/399413060675170509/ where science and photography merge to bring us the unseen world or the other side of Mother Nature, it comes as no surprise to us now when an ancient text the Padma Purana listed the 8.4 million species of life, dividing it into six large groups, namely acquatics or Jalaja – 0.9 million; trees or Sthavara – 2.0 million; insects or Krimayo – 1.1 million; , birds or Pakshinam – 1.0 million: , animals or Pashavah – 3.0 million; and humans or Manavah – 0.4 million.

TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE

A friend asked recently why people are so obsessed with cheating death that they fail to enjoy life? I tend to agree with him. There is so much talk about life after death and attaining wonderful states thereafter. Whatever done in the present works out to be a deposit or saving for a future life. They work towards it at the expense of not living life fully. 

Generally there is the paper chase to fulfill an ambition; followed by a need for recognition and a status in life; then working towards it; and finally settling in a life without worry. These are what is sought by many as they work towards their material goals. They can also be the least worried about the guy next door. Then there are many who turn to become philosophers churning out quotes of famous personalities in all situations. These are those who sit on the fence and watch the world go by, hardly putting in any effort, whiling away their time, moving aimlessly and eventually do not achieve much in life. Then there are others who pursue a spiritual path, leaving their well paid job and seeking the solitary of the monasteries and ashrams. They decide that you cannot have the best of both worlds and opt to live in seclusion. They have made the choice and taken the first step to attempt to break the cycle of birth and death. There are many other denominations too. 

But the world has a place for everyone. When man wants only his kind to rule and dominate the world, Erai is extremely generous in allowing all 8.4 million species of life on the face of this earth and below it, according to the Padma Purana.  Although not all of his creation worships him, yet he does not segregate them. He provides for all these wonderful creatures, animals, plants, and humans alike. 

Agathiyar tells us that he has placed us here to enjoy life. He calls this nation Bhoga Naadu and Shukra Bumi. While partaking the milk and honey, he comes along in mid life to remind me that there is yet another world of lasting joy out there. He tells me to follow him. Searching for more information on the path of the siddhas, brought me to several societies and associations run under his name. But non impressed me. He then brings me to Supramania Swami who ignites the flame of devotion and sends Tavayogi to nurture it. Agathiyar shows us a way to liberation or mukti that puts a stop to this journey of death and birth within this cycle of 8.4 million species. As Tavayogi told me he too shall come back, and as both my gurus tell me that we shall work on it till we perfect the technique to break the chain of death and birth, we are taking one step at a time, working on the task given by Agathiyar day to day, from moment to moment. 

Life is a wonder. The earth is a wonder. Birth is a wonder. We are surrounded by a whole lot of miracles taking place simultaneously at each moment in time and space, but sadly we have shut our eyes to it and closed our ears to it. We have lost the ability to appreciate and sense the aroma in the air, to taste the delicate qualities of food; and to feel the pleasantness in our surroundings.

A woman ovulates and a mature egg makes its way down her falopian tube towards the uterus. A sperm cell, one among many, competes to make its way towards the egg and fertilizes it after much effort. At fertilization the sex of the fetus is determined depending on whether the egg receives an X or Y chromosome from a sperm cell. The embryo takes shape. Its heart and lungs develop; it grows limbs; brain, spinal cord and nerves begin to form; the ankles, wrists, fingers and eyelids form; bones appear; the genitals and inner ear begin to develop progressively; bones and muscles begin to grow; buds for future teeth appear; fingers and toes grow; the intestines begin to form; eyebrows, eyelashes, fingernails and the neck all form; the skin has a wrinkled appearance; the fetus can bend its arms and legs; its kidneys start working and produce urine; and the fetus can swallow and hear. The fetus has its regular cycle of sleeps and wakes; fine hair appears on its skin; hair begins to grow; the eyes begin to open and the brain develops rapidly; the lungs are completely formed but have yet to function; the fetus kicks and stretches; it responds to light and sound; its eyes open and close; bones harden but the skull remains soft and flexible to make delivery easier; different regions of the brain are formed; and the fetus has hiccups! Now when does this 'I' come into the picture? My grand daughter who is a year and seven months has begun to make choices for herself. She picks either this shoe or the other. She has begun to state her stand. She refuses to take certain foods. She chooses to ignore instructions. The self is determining her actions. We would remember what she does now and narrate them to her later in life, but she might never have any memory of it then. As we grow up we become more identified with this body, looking after its needs, keeping it pretty and healthy. There is nothing wrong in wanting to look pretty and presentable. We need to be healthy and stay healthy too. 

Erai placed us here to reap the merits of our past actions. If we had done good, life would be pleasant. If we had harmed others, life would be difficult. Whether we gathered good merits or bad, life will end one day and we might have to come back another round to settle the scores. Agathiyar tells us not to be too preoccupied with the day to day living. He has asked us to devote a little of our time to be in the company of Erai. He is asking us to gather some merits in this life too by helping others. He reveals the task and mission we need to accomplish as children of Erai. Besides working for our needs he is asking us to carry out Erai's work too. It is truly an honor to be given the priviledge to do Erai's work. 

As Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha states that birth and the life that ensues is a blessing,
For a Jivatma, to be born as a human among the innumerable species of life, is itself a unique blessing in the arduous journey through countless births. Human birth provides the exclusive opportunity to pursue the Purusharthas — dharma (righteousness), wealth (artha), desire (kama) and salvation (moksha). Even in the brief life span, there is the inbuilt chance to gain access to knowledge of God, experience His infinite greatness, and seek salvation.
let us take up the opportunity and chance given to gain access to the divine knowledge and experience his infinite grace and greatness, and if we are fated and if he grants, we might attain mukti yet. Here is an opportunity for us to know Erai, our creator and pay obeisance and homage to him. Some worship him in the temples; others worship him at home, praising him, and thanking him. Others see him in their guru, preach and spread his teachings. Yet many never even give a thought that there might be a creator. As Agathiyar says let it me, he has given us an opportunity to know him and through him know Erai. He appeared in the Nadi to remind me of our bond. He came to me through the numerous miracles of his. He tells us that he was in the past, he is in the present and he will be in the future. He quickly adds that so are we. I was in Papanasam, in Shringeri, in Batu Caves, in the past births. I am here how. The present will determine and establish where I shall be in the future. If the past had played a role in where I am today, similarly the present will determine my future. If I handle my present tactfully my future will be as I want. I then am master of my destiny. Although I cannot change my fate that determines my body frame, shape, looks, race, parents, family but I can surely change my destiny both in the present and thereafter through my concerted effort. Taking care of my present also takes care of my future.

Let us make a resolution now that although we cannot change the past, but we can surely decide on the present. If my grandchild can make decisions surely we as adult can decide what is best for us. Once a decision is made wisely based on the circumstances prevailing and options available, learn to move on with life. Never regret for the decision made earlier for remind yourself that it was the best decision based on your evaluation of all the factors prevailing at that moment in time. Learn not to harm another and similarly life will not deal a blow or be cruel to you. Learn to aid all those who seek your help, to the best of your ability without jeopardizing your peace and life. Life will be a boon in the future. Learn to cherish the present moment. Live life moment to moment. Live a quality life each moment. Then you shall not regret later. You can tell yourself that you have given it your best shot. You need not go back to redo or amend the task. Do it with passion and love and the results will bring joy to you. Avoid shoddy work that requires you to come back again and again to make good the work you did.

Accept that you cannot change the past. Put in your best effort to the task on hand. If troubles trouble you leave it to Erai to take charge of it. Only surrender your problems to him but take charge of your life and work towards fulfilling your desires. But if all hope fails, if life deserts you, if all you face is problems, do not despair! This is where you then surrender your total self to him. Life has now gone beyond you and is His to lead. After all efforts have failed, turn to him to change your life around, only after you have attempted to knock on or open all the doors available!

WORKING OUR WAY THROUGH

How can I repay Agathiyar for all he has given me? He gave us a birth that is to be treasured. According to Sankara, he says that the human birth is first among the three most rarest gifts obtained through the grace or Arul of Erai. This human birth is followed by the longing for liberation; and finally discipleship to an illumined teacher.

Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha states that birth and life that ensues is a blessing: "For a Jivatma, to be born as a human among the innumerable species of life, is itself a unique blessing in the arduous journey through countless births. Human birth provides the exclusive opportunity to pursue the Purusharthas — dharma (righteousness), wealth (artha), desire (kama) and salvation (moksha). Even in the brief life span, there is the inbuilt chance to gain access to knowledge of God, experience His infinite greatness, and seek salvation."

We are told of couples desiring to have a child, engaging purohit or priests to perform rituals and Yagnas to please the Gods and the planets in present times. We have also read of such Yagnas and prayers conducted in much bigger scales in the days of yore. Erai has given us the gift of birth that is much awaited by souls, standing in line to come down and serve a purpose. The gift of a child is every married couple's dream too. When their desires match, a child comes into the world. Contrary to common belief that two individuals are brought together through arranged marriage or through love and romance for each other, it is the child that is waiting to be born, that brings the couple together.  My wife and I were brought together - again, by Agathiyar after considering my daughter's desire to be together - again. 

Living a life full of joy, the child grows up into a teen and youth. The youth grows up. Soon he fathers a child and faces his share of responsibilities. Towards the end of his life, when he has settled all his responsibilities towards his family, he begins to serve his community and the society. Soon he begins to look for salvation for himself and if possible bring others along too. For one who succeeds to bridge the gap, meet up with the divine, it is generally claimed that 21 of his generations gain moksha. Manusmriti 3:37 makes a rather similar claim:  A son who performs meritorious acts, absolves the sins of 21 generations; he liberates ten generations of his ancestors, ten generations of his descendants and his current generation.

It is also said that man recreates himself through his children. I am my father, my grandfather and my ancestors before me. I shall be my child and their descendants too. A story is told of how Agathiyar came across his ancestors who were cursed to hang upside down from a tree and how Agathiyar redeemed their curses, setting them free. When we go for a nadi reading, we are often told that we have been cursed by our forefathers, hence the suffering. We are given remedies to rectify the past wrongs and pacify our ancestors. Besides worshiping the ancestors, we are told not to discontinue the worship of kula deivam or ancestral deities, fearing that we gain their wreath too. Then there are kaaval deivam or deities that protect the village perimeters, whom we need to pay homage too. Moving up the ladder we are shown the temples and the presiding deities, that includes the whole pantheon of Gods and Goddesses. Among them we are often asked who is our favourite/personal deity or Ista Devatha? While pursuing the path of devotion or bhakti, we are then introduced to gurus or masters in the physical form. We are told that the guru comes to dispel the darkness and brings us towards the light. It is also said that the guru leads us to Erai, shows us Erai. So is all our previous worship false then?

Tavayogi came along to fine tune the rituals he had me started on. Agathiyar revealed himself through a nadi reading to me when I was 43 years of age. These precious moments of my first encounter with my guru and Paramaguru did not happen by accident. It was predetermined. All the effort placed and worship done, all the yearning in wanting to know Erai, and all the searching and seeking, caused ripples in the waters of space and time. The meeting between the guru and the disciple was waiting for the right moment to happen. The coming of the guru lit up an otherwise dark alley. The coming of the guru lit up the way. Each step I took henceforth, a lamp was lit slightly ahead of me, showing me an additional mile. It is interesting to look back on this journey of mine and count the miles I had journeyed. Tavayogi was a grand old soul having lived and having served Agathiyar in his time. Mataji Sarojini Ammaiyar was present when Agathiyar inaugurated the Sivalingam he made from the sand of River Kaveri, at the spot of present day Nattadreeswarar temple. Sri Krishna had ferried her across then. The Rajahs have served Agathiyar at Kuttralam. Dr Janar had served a siddha. It thrills us to know that we have traveled far and wide in this journey of the soul. We have served previous gurus and at times inconvenienced them and earned their wrath too. The bond between guru and disciple has carried on till this life time. It shall continue after this birth too.

Today Agathiyar, Lord Muruga, Dhanvanthri, Ramalinga Adigal, Ma and Aiya have all made their presence known to us. Siva and Parvathi with all their entourage have blessed this home and devotees. Both my gurus Supramania Swami and Tavayogi have shown their presence too. We are assured of their blessings for life.  This bond is here to stay. And all this began with the worship to the Siddhas. Thank you Agathiya for an exciting life time.

HOMAGE TO THE SAINTS

The siddha path is the path of grace or Arul Neri. A path only gains merits if people follow it. It is of no use if a single person had traveled the path and reached the destination without having others follow him. The path less traveled is often swallowed by the undergrowth and any trace of it is lost in the undergrowth and wilderness that consumes it. Then there comes a man who stumbles upon the path, follows it and revives the journey again. Many saints have traveled the same path although at different times. They give it a new form and name but the essence of it remains. 

Gnana Bharathi writes in his “Tamil Mannin Thanthai”, drawn by the divine and having worshiped him since young, at 12 years of age Ramalingam followed a guru and traveled the hills and the plains to the abodes of the siddhas. Coming to know that there was indeed a way to remain immortal he sat in tapas for 12 years under the tutelage of his guru.

At the end of the 12 year tapas his body glittered like gold and his guru himself could not bring himself to see Ramalingam as he shone with a blinding brightness. Ramalingam had attained a body that could not be affected by the five elements and could not be brought down by any other factors. His body was to know no hunger and thirst too, said his guru. His guru blessed him to teach the path to others so that they too could defeat death. Ramalingam was 24 then. 

Ramalingam came back to the society. What he saw disturbed him a lot. He felt the sufferings of the innocent people who were being manipulated by certain quarters in all ways possible. Ramalingam began to teach people to worship the jhoti. If prior to these we were shown god as having many forms, he brought us to the worship of light. From form to no form. For one who had abstained from naming his guru, he abstained from giving Erai a form too. 

It is said that numerous attempts were made to take his photo but surprisingly his image could never be caught on films. Could the reason his photo could not be taken - be to ensure that no one would deviate and sidetracked in worshiping him instead of the formless Erai he was talking about?

Coming back to the society of the day, he fought the problems that had cropped up and infiltrated the society during that time. Besides discrimination based on caste, and the multitude of religion that had arisen, he saw other faiths moving in and encroaching on the locals who were in dire state of disarray. He began a journey of propagating his new found path, the worship of light. Beginning from Chennai his journey brought him to Thiruvotriyur and Tirutani. Moving to Pondicherry and then later to Chidambaram, Sirgazhi, and Vaitheeswaram, he moved south to Madurai, Thiruvathavur, Thiruperunturai, and Karunkuzhi. He briefly goes back to Madurai, before settling at Karunkuzhi from where he used to frequent Chidambaram. 

It is interesting to note that while he undertook this journey to reach out to the masses and bring salvation to their souls, when the locals in Patiripuliyur gathered around him and seeked his advice as a result of confusion that had arisen after another movement was telling them that they should leave idol worship, Ramalinga Adigal replied to them to continue what they were currently doing as that was best for them. 

The locals at Vadalur donated a piece of land some 80 acres in size. He started the Dharma Salai to feed the hungry; the Sanmarga Sangam to bring together his followers and the Sanmarga Bhotini Padasalai to educate them in divine knowledge or jnanam. Staying at Karunguzhi he began to supervise and direct the construction of all these buildings. 

Before he entered the room at Sittivalagam Thirumaligai in 1874 and merged with Erai he told those who had gathered that although he would be out of sight, he would be around another 42,000 years as a Gnana siddhar and after that take on the form of a Pranava Degi or the Pranava Degam. Gnana Bharathi ends his book mentioning that Ramalinga Adigal went into a Peranandha Nittirai or the sleep of joy. 

Ramalinga Adigal’s disciple Kalpattu Aiya was adamant that his guru will come to take him just as he had come to Kalpattu Aiya’s home and instructed him to Vadalur, hence taking him in. After 25 years on 26 April 1902 his wish came true. Ramalinga Adigal appeared before Kalpattu Aiya. In that state of joy, Kalpattu Aiya dropped his mortal frame. Ramalinga did the last rites for Kalpattu Aiya. 

Just as Ramalinga Adigal exclaims joyously that he became a siddha, 

முத்தியைப் பெற்றேன் அம் முத்தியினால் ஞான 
சித்தியை உற்றேன் என்று உந்தீபற 
சித்தனும் ஆனேன் என்று உந்தீபற,

Mahakavi Bharathi too makes a similar claim. 

எனக்கு முன்னே சித்தர் பல ரிருந்தாரப்பா! 
யானும்வந்தே நொரு சித்தனிந்த நாட்டில் 
மனத்தினிலே நின்றிதனை யெழுது கின்றாள் 
மனோன்மணியென் மாசக்தி வையத் தேவி

The world’s great saints never attended classes nor took up courses. Some were trained under the watchful eyes of their masters. Guided initially by their gurus, they discovered Erai for themselves. Erai then guided and taught them directly. The saints were all leaders, never followers. 

Here we have to be grateful to the siddhas and Ramalinga Adigal for putting themselves through austerities and suffering to achieve the desired results for the sake of ours, so that they could share the secrets, the techniques and methods in a codified and simplified way. Their experiments to decipher the unknown and experiences on the spiritual path and journey has come down to us as wisdom or divine knowledge or jnana. The one who walked the path maps the journey for others to follow, leaving sufficient signage as directions, at times leaving even a boat and an oar for us to travel faster and at ease. 

The siddhas start us off with bringing compassion within us. This comes from feeding and serving others. Then when the grace or Arul of Erai falls on us, his Arul leads us to Anbu or love. When the love then binds the body with the uyir or life force, the state of deathlessness is achieved. For these to happen the siddhas drafted the way and means for the common man by walking him through the four states of Sariyai, Kriyai, Yogam and Jnanam. We are humbled that we have been given the privilege to travel the path Agathiyar and the siddhas took, something made possible by Tavayogi and Agathiyar. 

We at ATM are truly grateful to the divine for bringing us to know about these magnificent saints who drew up a path for us to follow out of compassion. We shall attempt to walk the path too, irrespective if we achieve the said results or not. At least we have began the walk.

IDOL WORSHIP

A head of an organization for Agathiyar took me to task for worshiping Agathiyar as an idol by quoting lines from Sivavakiyar's songs many years back. He churned out the popular verse, "Nattakalum pesumoh" and many others. 
நட்ட கல்லைச் சுற்றி வந்து நாலு புஷ்பம் சாற்றியே; சுற்றி சுற்றி வந்து முணு, முணுக்க சொல்லும் மந்திரம் ஏதடா! சுட்ட சட்டி சட்டுவம் கறிச்சுவை அறியுமோ! நட்டகல்லும் பேசுமோ; நாதன் உள்ளிருக்கையில்.
I replied that I just followed the dictates of Agathiyar who had instructed me to do so. Not satisfied he continued to ridicule me and my worship. I told him that he might not need idol worship as he has been on the path for some 35 years but I was still new entering my fifth year then. He would not end the debate but continued. I realized that I was talking to a wall and chose to shut my eyes and ears and began to be indifferent to his views. I do not remember how long I sat quiet but on opening my eyes later I realized that he had left the place. He was nowhere to be seen.

I was surprised to hear that come from one who was running an ashram in the name of Agathiyar and who had some 30 students under him. Why do people like to ridicule others' faith? Why do people quickly put others down in public? Agathiyar who tells us that people have held on to many wrong perceptions; believing them to be true; and have upheld the false for ages, also tells us, "Let it be." What a stand! The Divine in this instance becomes truly the watcher. He does not change the flow of events nor interfere with it.

I always look for a reason for any event to take place. Nothing is a coincidence. When two people meet there is something that each will learn from the outcome of that meeting, provided they are both aware. This episode took place at the time when I had decided that I was not seeing anyone. I did not want to meet him or anybody else for that matter in the first place. I had told Agathiyar I was not seeing any guru, master, or teacher after I came to him and my lovely gurus Supramania Swami and Tavayogi. But Dr. Krishnan, a dear friend, and also a Siddha practitioner and medical astrologer, asked that I meet the head of the ashram as he was into the worship of Agathiyar too. I was obliged to the Dr and made myself present at his office where the head was staying temporarily. After the showdown, I came back angry with myself for not putting my foot down and upholding my stand on not meeting them. The meeting had turned sour that day for both of us. 

As soon as I reached home I picked up my book, a collection of Siddha songs that had begun to collect dust. I ran through the 551 songs of Sivavakiyar that same night. Thanks to the head, I had the need to go through Sivavakiyar's collection of songs, to verify what he had said to me was true. At the onset, it seemed that he was right about Sivavakiyar and his stand on idol worship. There were the verses he had mentioned to me and many more, ridiculing external worship in the book.
செங்கலும் கருங்கலும் சிவந்த சாதி ­லிங்கமும்
செம்பிலும் தராவிலும் சிவன் இருப்பன் என்கிறீர்
உம்மதம் அறிந்து நீர் உம்மை நீர் அறிந்த பின்
அம்பலம் நிறைந்த நாதர் ஆடல் பாடல் ஆகுமே! 
ஓசை உள்ள கல்லை நீர் உடைத்திரண்டாய் செய்துமே
வாச­லில் பதித்த கல்லை மழுங்கவே மிதிக்கிறீர்
பூசைக்கு வைத்த கல்­லில் பூவும் நீரும் சாத்துறீர்
ஈசனுக்கு உகந்த கல் எந்தக்கல்லு சொல்லமே. 
What was the lesson for me? That night, I came to read a book that I had with me for a long time. I came to know and understand Sivavakiyar, or so I thought.

What was the lesson for the head of the ashram then? When the annual puja for Agathiyar was held at the Sri Sakti Karpaga Vinayagar temple at Brickfields (the weekend after I met the head), I had no intention to participate in the prayers initially, since I had told Agathiyar, besides not seeing anyone, I was not going anywhere too. But Tavayogi called me by phone from India and asked me to attend on his behalf, as he had an invitation for the event. I could not refuse my guru. As I dragged my feet to the vizha, who should I see entering the temple with Dr. Krishnan? It was the head of the organization who denied idol worship! I was both surprised and puzzled over the whole episode, right from the run-up to the meeting with the head; the outcome of the meeting, and the subsequent chain of events following the meeting. Today Ma tells me that everything is a learning process and that one's learning will be another's knowledge.

So was I wrong in worshiping an idol? Is it wrong to go to temples? Agathiyar reveals to Dr. VN Jayapalan of Bangalore, during his meditation that the very first temple for him build at the start of Kali Yuga was at Agasthiyampalli. It was built by Kuberan. Kuberan who was the king of the Asuras is supposedly the half-brother of Ravanan. Kuberan once ruled Lanka but was overthrown by his half-brother Ravana. Kuberan is also said to be the grandson of Pulastya. Interestingly, Agathiyar who started me on idol worship had asked me to commission an exact bronze image of him at this temple in Agasthiyampalli.

Agathiyar in his journey south to Agasthiyampalli, where he is said to have pressed his thumb into the ground and brought a balance to an otherwise tilted earth, had stopped in the middle of River Kaveri and formed a Sivalinga with his hands out of the river sand to worship. This place is now known as Nattadreeswarar temple. It is located off the banks of a small village called Kangayapalaiyam in Erode. This is only one of the numerous temples where Agathiyar had established the Sivalinga and started worship to it. Agathiyar took the lead in idol worship.

While Sivavakiyar in his songs seems to be against idol worship, rituals, etc, Agathiyar asked me to worship him as a bronze statue. What do I do then? I followed my guru Agathiyar and chose to ignore the verses by Sivavakiyar. The irony is that we have included Sivavakiyar in the list of Siddhas and many temples and ashrams have statues for him too where worship is done to him. The one who condemns idol worship is worshiped as an idol! Similarly, knowing pretty well that I would resort to worshiping him (Tavayogi) instead of Agathiyar, my guru Tavayogi broke me, killing the thought in its infant stage, the very moment and day I had him over to my house for the very first time. I am grateful to him for nipping it in the bud. 

Agathiyar came to my home as a bronze statue in 2010. He was commissioned in Swamimalai and was supposed to stay at my home for some time just until the Jegathguru Sri Raghavendra Mritiga Brindavanam Kinta in Ipoh was completed. But he decided to stay on permanently. Today Agathiyar tells us that we would have to move him to an even bigger venue. The reason is that my present house ATM can no longer accommodate his devotees. Besides that, Ma has asked us to perform libation daily, apart from the usual libations on Thursdays, Pornami, and Amavasai, and to stop only when she tells us.

It was through this idol worship that Agathiyar brought many to my home. Some he sent over after their Nadi readings. Others came to read this blog and searched for my place. Some picked up our location from Google Maps and headed over.

It was through this worship that he gave us the privilege to serve him, fulfilling the role of a servant and son as in Sariyai and Kriyai respectively.

It was through this worship that he showed us his presence. He showed us he was alive and living in the tiny piece of metal when he opened his eyes in his statue during the libation and ritual of bathing or abhisegam in 2013. Since then he has been watching us.


It was through this worship that he answers our prayers. He had asked that devotees light a ghee lamp and place their desires and wishes before him.

It was through this worship that he comes to us and cares for us 24/7 and saved us on many occasions.

There is something very mysterious about idol worship, we soon came to learn. Agathiyar will weigh a lot more once abhisegam is over, a very marked increase in his weight from his original 18 kilograms. Many have attested to this and are witnesses to this mysterious phenomenon. When Bala Chandran, Dyalen, Sugu, and Shanga stood ready to carry him on a litter, never did they anticipate that he would gain weight as they carried him around the Sri Mayuranathar/ Pamban Swamigal temple grounds. Again Dyalen who jokingly brushed off our offer to assist him in carrying Agathiyar's statue from the car park to the home of Bala Aiya, soon realized that Agathiyar had gained weight when he returned him to the car after the abhisegam. This is how Agathiyar weighs himself down each time we conduct abhisegam for him at ATM too.

The mystery of temples and idols has been deciphered and revealed by Najan in his comprehensive book "Aalayangalum Aagamangalum" by Pirathiba Pirasuram, Chennai, 1983. He states several reasons for us to begin and engage in worship. He claims that it is the only permanent and lasting solution to rid of one's worries. He adds that worship helps in self-cleansing, both external and internal. He quotes a song by Thuraimangalam Sivapragasa Swami to strengthen this statement.
திருக்குறும் அழுக்காறு அவாவோடு வெகுளி
செற்றம் ஆகிய மன அழுக்கைத் தியானம் என புனலால்;
பொய் புறங்கூறும் தீச்சொல் என்ற வாய் அழுக்கை
அருட்கிளர் நினது துதி எனும் புனலால்;
அவத் தொழில் எனும் மெய் அழுக்கை
அருச்சனை எனும் புனலால் கழுவா
அசுத்தனேன் உய்யும் நாள் உளதோ.
Najan explains the term idol or vikkiragam.

விக்கிரகம் = இறைவன் விஷேசமாக இருக்கும் இடம்.
வி = விஷேசம்.
கிரகம் = இடம்.

கோயில்.
கோ = இறைவன்.
இல் = வீடு.

Even before Agathiyar came as a statue he had come as a picture first, a mantra later, and a yantra too. How then does the picture, stone, rock, metal, copper foil, or plant become or turn divine? We have come to learn that we can bring the divine into these things. When Agathiyar asked me to worship him as a statue he told me "Neethan uruvum kudukkunum, uyirum kudukkunum"; asking that I pass on the spark and feed life into it. As we are all a spark from the source, he wanted us to pass on a tiny spark of us into the bronze statue and through 100,000 chants of his name, give it life too. These were what the Siddhas and rishis did in the past too. Through chanting mantras, they brought Erai, who is in all of his creation, to dwell in specific statues and places. Similarly, Erai who dwells in all of us chooses to show his presence exquisitely through selected people, whom we came to call saints. So is it with the idols. The raw form or material that the statue is made from, by nature carries its own characteristics. The sangalpam or thought that is brought to mind, helps us identify with Erai. The mantra that is unique for the deity, when chanted, bridges us with Erai. Constant repetition of the mantra further amplifies Erai's presence in the statue. The yantra that is placed below the statue intensifies its nature. The libation and other rituals conducted daily bind Erai to the statue. Finally with the attendance of devotees and their undivided attention, when focused and concentrated on the idol, their souls, although momentarily, merges with the divine at that very instant. The temple becomes one big powerhouse or transformer and the idol, a medium for transmission. The stone becomes divine.

The statue receives energy from the cosmos and becomes a conductor of positive energy which is then transmitted to people in the vicinity. During worship, there are so many elements that go into play bringing together this marvelous parade or show of energies, vibrations, sound, and movement that awakens all our senses at one go, drawing the divine down to our plane and level to grace and bless us, at the same time. The lights, sound, and actions bring the wandering mind to a state of focus and concentration where all the senses at least for that moment remain focused on the statue. The thought is held captive; the breath is halted; the vision is set on the deity; the noise around is drowned by the ringing of the bells; the hearing is alerted to the Pranavam AUM; and the aroma that the air carries reaches the depths of the soul and calms it down. The result is an experience of peace or Shanti.

To learn to see Erai in a statue is the simplest form of faith that one can possibly design, beginning with the child and it works both for the illiterate and the learned. It can be accepted at face value, without the need for a deeper understanding of its mechanics. Just as a child is given a play toy, we need to start worship with a child's innocence. She does not doubt even for a second that the toy isn't alive. She hugs it and puts it to bed; she feeds and dresses it. She does not expect anything in return from the toy but showers unconditional love and care and at times go to the extent of being possessive over it, seeing it as an extension of itself, just as we see the body as one, and tend to own it. 

Experience has taught us that there is some truth in the worship of the idol and that we can connect and stay connected with the divine. The divine spirit cannot manifest in its true form before our eyes. Even if it does we are not capable of seeing or sensing it. Hence the need for a medium either a person or base material for the divine to manifest through. Our ancestors knew this truth and build majestic places of worship so that people could get connected with the spirit of Erai. Back at their homes, they built smaller shrines or altars so that they could stay connected continuously.

So was Sivavakiyar against idol worship and rituals? If so why is he in Sivanmalai? I have been to Sivanmalai where Sivavakiyar is said to have meditated. We are shown an opening and an underground passage to a cave now closed up and grilled, just adjacent to Lord Muruga's sannadhi. From http://arundhtamil.blogspot.com/2016/04/294.html we understand that Maraimalai Adigal has interpreted Sivavakiyar's above-mentioned songs quite differently.
பொதுவாக அனைவரும் அப்பாடலைக் கடவுள் வழிபாடு (கடவுளுக்கு உருவ வழிபாடு) தேவையற்றது என்று வற்புறுத்துவதற்கே, மேற்கோளாக அடிக்கடி எடுத்துக் குறிப்பிடுவது வழக்கம்.
"நட்ட கல்லும் பேசுமோ? நாதன் உள்ளிருக்கையில்" என்னும் பாடற்பகுதி, கடவுள் உண்மையையோ, கடவுளுக்கு நாம் செய்யும் உருவ வழிபாட்டையோ மறுப்பதன்று. நாதன் இருக்கின்றான், உள்ளே இருக்கின்றான் என்றே அப்பாடல் கூறுகின்றது.
He reads it as,
"நட்ட கல்லும் பேசும்; ஓ(ம்);நாதன், உள்ளிருக்கையில்" என்றும் கூட, நாம் படித்துணர்ந்து பொருள் கொள்ளத்தக்க முறையில், அமைந்திருக்கிறது எனக் கொள்ளுவதற்கும் இடமுண்டு என விளக்கினார், மறைமலை அடிகளார்.
This brings on an entirely new perspective to the song. On another note, Sivavakiyar surprises us further by singing the following verses, denouncing rebirth, when Agathiyar reveals in the Nadi our past births and speaks about them. 
பசுவின் மடியில் கறந்த பாலை மீண்டும் அதன் மடியில் செலுத்த முடியாது. கடைந்தெடுத்த வெண்ணெய் தயிராகாது. பறித்த பூவும், உதிர்த்த காயும் மரத்தில் ஒட்டாது. அதுபோல இறந்தவர்கள் யாவரும் திரும்ப பிறப்பதில்லை.
Although we understand that there exist various views regarding idol worship and rebirth as with other controversial subjects too, and irrespective of what Sivavakiyar says, Agathiyar tells us he graces our home and is alive in the statue in numerous Nadi readings. Today he makes his presence made known to us in multiple ways, blessing one and all.

We know that when one reaches the state of Sivavakiyar, he can then drop idol worship and other ritualistic practices. For now, I shall follow the dictates of my guru Agathiyar, word for word. We at ATM are slowly beginning to realize the move that is taking place; from and through external worship we are moving within to internal worship and spontaneous meditation. Maybe one day we shall realize the truths that Sivavakiyar has spelled out. Till that day and till Agathiyar says otherwise, we shall continue with idol worship.

FROM HOME TO PEEDHAM

The idea in coming to the siddhas, sadly for most is to hope that the siddhas can settle their debts, cure their terminal illness, or remove their sufferings etc immediately. This was hinted to me by an elderly man back in 2005 when I visited Tavayogi who was staying at a Peedham then. He came over to me upon being introduced and asked me what was my problem numerous times. I did not go there with a problem. I just wanted to meet Tavayogi. He kept insisting that I had a problem, and that was the reason I came. After further denial he finally opened up telling me that people always came with problems. Traveling the path I came to know the truth in his words.

As both Tavayogi and Agathiyar say, they never came for jnana to learn the traits of the siddhas nor to gain experience similar to what they had gone through. Even if they came for jnana, they were more eager to set up peedhams and head it, as it came with the glamour and attention from the followers. Tavayogi had mooted me to carry out many things among them: bringing my family to the path; he mooted me to perform homa and he ask that I speak about the siddhas. He reprimanded us, reminding us to never to fall at his feet, not to perform pata puja or homage to his feet, and never to idolized him. Never had he at any moment told me to start a peedham. When many took the opportunity to bring him to officiate their peedham all over Malaysia during his many visits, it never occurred to me to start one either.

I never did like to start a peedham then and even now. The reasons are many. I saw how difficult it was for Tavayogi to gather funds and good people to assist him in building his ashram. I saw the numerous problems he faced including those created by others in sabotaging the venture. I have seen temple committees fight among themselves for post and power. And most importantly having struggled to build a temple, they were struggling further to upkeep the facilities. They needed further funds to maintain the structure; provide amenities including water and electricity and more funds to carry out the nitya or daily pujas if there was one. All these factors drove me away from engaging in starting a peedham or building a temple. I was pretty satisfied with what I had and how things went on at ATM.

Then it all fell into place on its own accord with the coming of many youngsters to my home. To identify the place I named my home Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia (AVM). Agathiyar later gave it a name - Jnana Kottam. I was too embarrassed to use it for I knew my standing. I personally felt we were not fit to use it, lest we tarnish the many genuine Jnana Kottams. Lord Muruga upgraded it naming it Agathiyar Tapovanam Malaysia (ATM). But all these was taking place in a modest home. Many who turned up at our doorway imagining to see a big temple/ashram/peedham complex were let down and left in disappointment. They never came back. But we are extremely comfortable with this arrangement. The only problem is space constrain as Agathiyar tells us he shall bring in more people to participate in our puja and other events, hence the need to move to a larger premise. 

After a brief mention in my very first Nadi reading in 2002 that I build a temple for him, Lord Muruga brought up the subject again in early January 2018. Seeing my passiveness and non-response to the request he got Agathiyar to talk me into it. I recall how my mother approached Agathiyar to help me manage my anger knowing that I would listen to him. He did give me a long lecture on it back then. Lord Muruga took a similar approach. Again I kept quiet not responding. Agathiyar tells me that it shall happen. I have began to give in to their wishes. Knowing Agathiyar everything happens for a reason, I am prepared for anything. Let the one who moves in us and who moves us, also move the venue, as he pleases.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

I have been asked to write on a very sensitive and personal matter, that is whether it is needed to be a vegetarian to gain the grace of Erai. 
Good afternoon Aiya. I have read few times somewhere in your blog about how you give up non vege food over the night. Its really amazing since people like me still struggling to give up the non vege food attachment. Of course i hv few vegetarian days in a week. But couldn't gv up totally. And.... someone told me that by eating non vege, you can't pray to Agathiar appa. If you have time Aiya, please gv some enlightenment or guidance to ppl like me via your blog writing. Thank you.
I replied to her,
These are the people who confuse others ma. God does not reject his child just by judging whats on his menu. God only sees the soul and not the physical. The reason they ask us to be vegetarian, and this answer is specifically for those seeking to become light like the siddhas and vallalar, is that it is easier to go through the transformation from solid to light body. Moreover at higher levels or states on the spiritual ladder, we need not even worry about eating because we will be taking in the ambrosia that is formed and oozes out from within. So why the fuss over food for common people like us?
She replied,
Thank you so much Aiya. i was so shattered and upset over the "remarks". Even i was told Siddhas get angry when i eat non vege & pray to them. I'm very clear now. I hv a stand that if i give up non vege food, it has to be voluntarily. No more even a slight liking in it.  I believe one day i shall give up totally this non vege food.
The reason to become vegetarian, for our purpose here, can be seen from two aspects. Ramalinga Adigal advocated his followers to be a vegetarian from the aspect of humanitarian grounds. He was a great saint and soul. He expressed compassion and love towards fellow humans in his days, where there was much oppression from all quarters towards human beings. He built the Dharma Salai to feed the poor and hungry. His extreme compassion crossed over to the animal kingdom too for these animals too tend to express their love, affection and attachment for both their offspring and their owners. Ramalinga Adigal's boundless love now then crossed over to the plant kingdom too when he sings a commonly quoted line, that he was sad at seeing the stalk of grain wither. Besides abstaining from hurting man and animal, and refraining from slaughtering and eating meat, he felt great sadness at seeing the wilted plants. Now let me place a question before you. If his heart and soul was saddened by the sight of the withering plant, would he have eaten them and other plants too? What could possibly be his diet then? 

The love in him went beyond boundaries, incorporating all of Erai's creation that he shunned from harming much less eating the meat, torso and carcass of animals. He had advised his followers to abstain from eating tubers and roots too for the sole reason that to harvest them would mean digging into the earth and removing them. They then "die". But he gave an exception that one could eat the yam or karunai kilangu. Each siddha and saint has recommended a life giving/saving herb to be consumed. Similarly Ramalinga Adigal's choice was karisalai, which is a plant. 

Ramalinga Adigal, we are told, only ate once in a few days and that too only a morsel or two. He would go on without food for days. In his state of spiritual transformation and attainment, he did not need food to sustain his body and life. How was that possible? He partook the ambrosia that flowed within. 

One should understand that what the masters, saints and gurus taught was from their own experience on the path to Erai. The problem with us is that the ego in us equates us with them without even coming to experience or reaching their saintly state. We dress like them and begin to churn the teachings of the saints minus the experience. 

One must remember that when we too come to their exalted spiritual state, all our aversions and desires too shall drop off its own accord, without any external force or directives. Our body is very intelligent. It brings the necessary changes for attaining a spiritual body and mind. We would not like nor dislike another, and we would not make choices in picking and choosing food. Neither would we prefer certain practices over others etc. An enlightened man would not make choices; he would not use his free will but instead live out the will of Erai.

Our prayer should then be that the divine work its magic in us too and help us subdue these cravings, rather then we curb it forcefully only to have it lay dormant and raise its hood when the situation and surroundings are favorable for it to germinate and grow again. All cravings should die a natural death never to rise again.

Agathiyar sees this debate from another expect. The need to abstain from taking meat arises if you are specifically working towards reaching the state of light or jhoti as did the siddhas and Ramalinga Adigal. In the process the body goes through numerous changes and inner transformation. It sheds its skin seven times just like the snake does. As often said, we are what we eat all the meat intake taken over the years need to be purged out, since the particles from the digested meat had gone into making the body, serving as building blocks of the body. If we abstain from taking meat early in life, the transformation would not hurt as much and would not prolong long. It would be quick and easy. These is based on true life experiences of saints and notes from people on the path to transform the physical body to that of a light body.

It all boils down to our choices in life - who do we want to be or what do we want to become?

Pardon me if I am wrong here. This is my understanding based on what I was told; what I have seen and been through and what little I could understand from the teachings of the great saints.
