Mysticism at its Height

Ally Oliver writes in "The Do's and Don’ts of Running When You’re Over 40",

"I’m not sure why I finally decided to give running a try. I think it was a stealth move by my husband. He has been a runner since his schooldays and even ran the London Marathon 15 years ago, but I’d never been tempted to join him because it was “his” thing. “My” thing, I have always said, is dance."

This statement, opinion, and thought of hers hold water for most of us do seem to have this notion of "My thing", and "His or her thing" in most matters. This is obvious in religious practices too coming down to even the simplest thing as a prayer where I have seen one of the couples engage while the other sits out of it. It is indeed a blessing if the couple can share all the fun and worries together, travel the same path, enjoy the same hobbies, enjoy the same food and the list can go on forever.

Although we come to know much of the saints, very little is told about their wives and children. But some masters had their wives equally engage with them on the path. I am blessed to have a wife and children who followed without question just as I followed Agathiyars dictates without failure. There were several instances though when I talked Agathiyar out of it mentioning my reluctance to accept his gifts or carry out the specified tasks. But he accepted my point of view and we moved on. Though this blog covers my point of view and experiences I have tried to include their views and experiences too as far as possible and permissible.

Experience makes us indeed. It is not the dress or company we keep. Experience truly teaches us. Unlike learning, this experience is not easily forgotten. A devotee who wanted to invite Agathiyar to his new home placed a request before him. Agathiyar agreed for us to bring his bronze statue over. My family was strictly asked to stay out of the preparations and in conducting the puja. It was to give them the full experience of hosting a puja. At the end of the day, the host agreed what a huge task it was to host one. He too gained a new experience.

The following couple's journey carried by a Network too is interesting and mystical in all ways. Those who have had a sample of mysticism would definitely connect with their experiences too.

HI THERE (WITH A SHEEPISH SMILE)

Hi there. If I had thought that I had hung up my hat, well I am back writing another post. It was hardly hours ago that I wrote in the last post, I would take a break from writing. But something of interest came up that opened up my understanding further as I waited for my car to be repaired this morning. I wanted to share it with my readers too. What could I do while waiting, but to begin writing? For I do not browse the web and net aimlessly to kill time. I just cannot do it. I cannot sit passively watching reels upon reels of trash that are uploaded or shared these days. We have become slaves to this one tiny palm-sized gadget, the smartphone. If the elders in those days upon waking up looked at their open palms, we these days wake up and look at this glaring screen in our palms. We just cannot seem to leave it behind or look away even for a moment. Just look around us and we shall see ourselves in others. This is one thing that we seem to share alike. Take a count on how many sit around or walk, gazing not on the road or up ahead or to the skies or the nature that surrounds them. We see children playing and having great fun at the park, and we see the adults accompanying them, who are supposed to join them in the fun, staring at this gadget. If in the past our joy and pleasure after a hard day at work was, sadly though, not in returning to the family, wife, and children, but the TV box that delivered continuous hours of entertainment, this small gadget in our palms has taken its place and practically taken over our lives too, these days. Our joy and fun it seems come out from this tiny gadget that brings the world to our fingertips. Yes while there is equally a whole world of information on the net that has come to replace physical books too, we have to learn to be selective in what we follow, read, or watch and not go on watching all that is shared and streamed continuously. As my time has to be used for something useful and productive, I am selective about what I watch or whom I follow. It should be informative, constructive, and life-changing.

Sending my car for service to the foreman who had just opened up for business for the day, he went about with his routine prayer to the deities paintings that he had placed at several altars at his worship and also across the road. I inquired about this practice of worship to the "Lesser Deities" or "Siru Deivam". We shared some moments talking about their world and their souls. An interesting thing that caught my attention was how the foreman came to place an altar of these deities, Madurai Veeran and Kali in his home too. I learned that the reason he and most likely others too were asked to place a painting or statue and worship these deities at home was if and when their houses were sitting in the path of these deities when they made their rounds. It is akin to the elephants that are said to have a good memory keeping to the same path all year round, crashing into and bringing down barriers, and constructions laid later by man and obstructions in their way. So when the elephants came gate crashing at Kallar ashram as most likely it was on its path too, Mataji upon consultation with others had a granite statue of Lord Ganapathy installed on the premises and worshipped. The story goes that when we sit on the path of these deities traversing their route who are known to travel in a straight line, as they do not maneuver the bends, curves, or obstacles, which was news to me, we are subjected to their wrath. So is it that we hear of uncalled visitations into the homes of people, and freak accidents on the road when they cross our path or rather when we sit on it or cross their path.

Now I understand the encounter my office colleague had with a deity many years back. He, his cousin, and his friend were having some beer one night in an open restaurant. His cousin left to pee some distance away. When he returned he wasn't himself. While his friend made a dash for it, my friend could not leave his cousin behind. The deity in his cousin asked that my friend deliver him to a temple that he kept pointing to. As my friend saw no temple in the vicinity, the deity sat in his car and began to show him the way. But he kept saying go straight all the while, often raising his voice for not following. My friend explained that he could not go straight as there were turnings, bends, corners, and numerous obstructions. Eventually, he saw a temple and they got off. He asked that my friend light up the camphor and immediately left his cousin's body. Now it is pretty obvious that these souls and deities travel in a straight line.

My wife some time back had discussed with Agathiyar, telling him that she could not bring herself to make offerings for the dead. Agathiyar explained that we do not need to make offerings and don't need these offerings. But those who had carried many desires and had wants that never saw the light of the day or were never fulfilled have to be appeased. They have to be given these offerings. I came to understand from my foreman friend who has been living and working with the Chinese community since 17 years old, that the Chinese community has got it right in getting to appease their ancestors' souls by burning mock cars, houses, and cash, all in paper, for their use in the afterlife. This brings us to accept what our community does, serving whatever the dear and dead loved to eat, days after their death and annually and a day or two before Deepavali.

All these make sense now. The subject of souls and their travels is truly intriguing. We can understand this gross world to a certain extent but trying to fathom the subtle and invisible is a challenge. Most gurus do not dwell on this subject but prefer to solve our day-to-day challenges. But Agathiyar wants us to prod the subject of souls and understand its workings. By this, I guess we will come to accept everything visible and invisible. I guess that is the reason I for one who drew a line between the "Siru Deivam" and I told them "Let us not cross paths" was made to receive them in my home and places I went to, with Agathiyar telling me that they too were his creation and not to sideline them. Just as in any administration or organization, there is the rank and file so is it with their realm.

The world of the Gods is truly amazing. If the above was a journey traveling the external, when we initially connect with them through external worship and Puja, and external rituals and later move within taking up Yoga, amazing changes take place in this gross and physical body. A reversal takes place whereby we begin our journey back to being a child in all manner. When Agathiyar said the soul or Atma after building this dwelling to house itself and the breath stays with the child, from 1 to 5 Varagai, a time frame that I am not familiar with before the Atma is veiled, this seemed interesting as I grew up hearing the story from my mother that Lord Brahma, who determines our fate, speaks to the child revealing and giving a day by day account of his or her life's events. This is why we see all sorts of emotions in a newborn. The child smiles, cries, etc in his sleep. The elders always warn us not to press the soft spot on the head. We feel this spot throbbing when we place our palms gently on it, remembering not to press it. Some time back, a reader from Kerala shared the following belief that was prevalent in her homeland.

In kerala (maybe you heard abt or too) special attention with reverence is given to the new born babies' top of the head. The portion where the skull is not closed.. we say that the soul connects to you through that pit. When Agathiyar told this I thought about it..

When the fetal skull closes the conversation with God ends. Science describes the skull of a child as follows.

The fetal skull contains cranial bones that have not yet joined together. The spaces that lie between the large cranial bones (the frontal bone, the parietal bone, the temporal bone and the occipital bone) are the membrane-bound fontanelle. This is why new borns have a "soft spot" on their head.

The anterior fontanelle is the largest of the fontanelles. It forms a "diamond-shape" structure and can take between 12 and 18 months to form the coronal suture that joins the frontal bone to the parietal bones. The anterior fontanelle closes at about 12-18 months and is larger than the other.

The posterior and sphenoidal fontanelle appear more "triangular-shaped" and close within a couple of months. The posterior fontanelle will close to form the lambdoidal suture that joins the occipital bone with the parietal bones.

The sphenoidal fontanelles (one lying laterally at each side of the cranium) will close to form the squamosal suture. The squamosal suture is bordered anteriorly by the frontal bone, superiorly by the parietal bone, posteriorly by the squamous portion of the temporal bone, and inferiorly by the greater wing of the sphenoid bone that joins the temporal lobes with the sphenoid.

(Source: https://www.scientistcindy.com/the-skull-anatomy.html)

Though nothing of this makes sense to me as I cannot imagine it by just reading it, the skull is said to give way, and the opening that was once in the infant in the beginning, but closed up as the ego in us was strengthened by our personal likes and dislikes, practices, habits, and external causes, reopens by the grace of the divine and the divine practices given and undertaken. The crown of the head begins to throb. A swirling sensation is felt that is equally cooling too. Sakthi the volatile energy that is both constructive and destructive, which created this gross body and the Tattvas in us and went into hibernation in the Muladhara, upon awakened by the grace of the divine and Yogic practices or by other means, rises up to meet Arujothi or the Effulgence that comes within through this soft spot. The Arujothi that comes within to meet its other half the Sakthi at the Crown Chakra, Sahasrara, where the union takes place is then engaged in the dance of Siva and Sakthi. Next is Atma Darisanam where the Soul that traveled with us and maketh us into who we are both physically and spiritually comes before us revealing its form as the guru and guide. We taste God. The individual is charged with Divine Grace. Gnanam dawns as the Prapanjam becomes accessible. Beyond this, only the experience of Brahmam exists. This is Samadhi.

This subject was brought up when one of the foreman's assistants who accompanied him to come to my assistance when my car tires were punctured beyond repair when I went over nails presumably thrown on the road some time back. His assistant who did not fail to notice the extraordinary growth of my hair between the time he saw me last then and today, enquired about it. I told him that yes it was growing at a fast rate and that it was black now. To the question, as many who know me and saw me asked, why I did not crop my hair, I just brushed it aside saying let it be. But the truth is that Agathiyar had told me before the advent of the pandemic itself when he dissolved the AVM group in September of 2019 and asked me to go within, not to let anyone touch my head. But during the lockdown barbers were not accessible and since Agathiyar had said thus, my wife would give me a crop.

But on 22 August 2022, I felt an "explosion of energy" in my belly as I woke up and stretched in bed. It felt like I had stretched a nerve below my belly button. I felt nauseous and my whole body became numb to the fingertips. Then a sudden swirl of energy was released in my abdomen bringing on a cold feeling throughout my body. I had to pee and ease myself. For fear that I would pee in bed, I got up to go to the toilet. I fell twice but picked myself up. It soon subsided. Towards night the top of my head was cool. The next day, I woke up to go to the loo but I could not piss. I fainted again. I called my wife asking her to bring the peacock feathers over and brush my body. My body became numb from the shoulders down. I lay like a log on my bed. I could not move an inch of my body. But I was aware of what was happening to me. I asked myself if this was what a dead body would feel like.

Seeking answers to what had taken place, we placed a request before Agathiyar to clear the air. And he did. He told me the following. There was nothing to worry about. Previously he had told me that energy had stagnated what I understood to be at Svathisthana. Tavayogi told me that our effort is only till this chakra. They have to come and lead us on from there. It was released now. But since the chakra was activated late in life the blood is affected. The blood count will tip the scale. He gives a warning to all of us. When the chakras are activated late in life it would have some adverse results on our bodies. When the heat of tapas increases in our body, blood flow will be less bringing on numbness. This would result in urinary and excretion problems. As it worried me and my wife, Agathiyar asked to go for a Medical checkup. He asked to seek allopathy treatment. He did treat me too by dipping my hands into a bowl of lukewarm water to the accompaniment of my family chanting the Arutperunjothi mantra. He ran his hands along my back and spine, placed his hands on my head, and applied the sacred ash over my body.

Agathiyar even spoke of death in the event it happens. Death is another doorway to another journey says Agathiyar. "Do not be afraid of death. It is but another door to another journey. One who invites death is a Siddha. There is much I need to carry out through you. Enough of my praise. Write about your bodily experiences. Let your writings be about the changes taking place in your body. Let your readers know the changes that take place in the body if they come to worship the light and seek to merge with it. My wisdom shall be your experience. Experience first and I shall clarify the experiences later. Experience is knowledge to you. Nothing is beyond experience."

The doctor gave me a clean bill of health. Agathiyar removed the fear in me though both he and Ramalinga Adigal had told me not to fear on numerous occasions. Though I knew a cleansing process was going on within I needed assurance that it was not a medical problem or problems that crop up with old age. When I ask him for an easier approach, Agathiyar tells me that there is no easier way to attain or merge with the breath, the sensation, the vibration, the magnetism, the Prapanjam, and the Jothi. With a little effort from us, the Siddhas shall aid us further. Then the energies will do the rest. Agathiyar surprised me by saying that my gurus should have come to my assistance. But as they are engaged in his work, they have asked Agathiyar to come to our needs. The Siddhas never abandon us in times of need.

The swirling sensation felt for several weeks in the abdomen just below my navel was regularly felt in the crown of my head but with a lesser intensity in the days to come. A chill and swirling went on irrespective of my daily activities these days. It was more intense each time I brought my attention to it. I guess this is what Agathiyar meant when he said I shall feel a magnetic wave arise. A couple of days later, it seemed more like a flowering of petals and was blissful. Following the flowering in the crown that went on without my effort, participation, or action, I asked Agathiyar what I should do further. His reply was to do nothing and that it shall do its work. But I am time and again told not to lose my cool and get angry for it shall bring me down from this state and it shall all be a wasted effort.

So, thenceforth, I even told my wife not to give me a haircut. Thus this is the reason for growing my hair long.

Just as I completed the draft sitting at the workshop, I received a message from a reader.

If it shall be a real break from the blog, I guess Agathiar appa is teaching me and may be some other ardent readers too -  to let go of attachments to your blog aiya. Acceptance takes time, but as how the (AVM) Whatsapp group desolved and finally I came to acceptance, this shall happen too. Thank you so much for your blog entry aiya. Looking back, It have change me and my perspective all together to better way.

I thanked her adding that Agathiyar was known to throw surprises.

Muruga tqvm ma for being an ardent follower. But knowing appa he is known to throw surprises.

And she replies,

I will be watching out for the surprises. As I always mention,  u are a lighthouse.

TAKING A BREAK

I think I shall take a break for a while now and be quiet, silent, and do nothing as both Agathiyar and Lord Murugan have asked of me. Let them tell me if and when I should continue writing this blog and upload videos on my YouTube channel. This would get me off the laptop and smartphone for some time too. Thank you very much for following this blog and the videos. Maybe they might have someone to continue writing and creating videos in the coming days. Let us wait and see.

A STORY

Bored at going through life that churns out the same routine day by day, one day we decide to take things into our own hands and work towards changing our fate and work towards a new destiny. Thinking that material gain shall overshadow all our troubles and worries, we work hard to rise up in life. We now have all the money and all that money can buy. We have all our friends and relatives milling around us. Then as time goes by, one by one all those whom we loved to have around leave or pass away. Only a handful of us remain behind. Some are bedridden. Some are immobile. Others have gone senile. Yet some others don't remember us. The young ignore us. We seem to be alone in this world of strangers. A sudden fear of death takes over. The thought what shall our last moment of life be like sets in? Should we wait longer? Or is our time soon? We are left in a limbo. This is the 1st scenario.

As we were promised the promised land of milk and honey, God's kingdom, we began our quest to reach it. We were pointed to several paths that apparently would take us there, each pioneer claiming that the path they showed us would bring us there. It is tough to decide. We are confused as to which to follow. We step on one anyway. We begin the journey at the expense of sacrificing time and money and leaving family and kin behind. But there is no sight of the promised land as yet. Days have gone by. Months have gone by. Years have gone by. But there is still no sign of God as promised. We arrive at the crossroads. We feel lost. There is no signage. We are lost for direction. We are lost for a guide who has traveled by or been there. Questions crop up. Were all these hearsay by others that we believed and followed and tracked up till now? Have we been conned? Have we been deceived? We look towards the skies now for guidance hoping a star among the many shall shower its love and compassion and come to lead us to God's kingdom. We pray even harder. No one comes. No one appears. Should I wait longer for a sign? Or should I retreat back? This is the 2nd scenario.

Looking around us we see many arrive at our bedside waiting for the hour clock to strike. We have yet some time to pick up a chat with the one beside and opposite us. As for the 2nd scenario, there is hardly anyone around. Who do we turn to? Loneliness sets in in both situations. Fear sets in in both situations too.

Where are you standing right now? Here is a spoiler. If in the first scenario, we are still bound by the material world, in the second we are ready to take the leap into the subtle world, that of knowing the (Jeev)Atma or Soul or Self.

Then a light appears from beyond in the 1st scenario. Suddenly a golden figure reaches out to us. Almost immediately a dark figure grabs hold of us too. A tussle goes on. We are now in the clutches of the golden figure. The dark figure retreats. We look behind to see that we have left our dwelling, our home sweet home, behind. We cry out loud, protesting that we do not want to follow. We want to return to our precious dwelling. We plead with the figure. He seems not to hear. There is no smile on his face. But wait, he doesn't have a face to begin with. Soon we pass through alien territories unimagined. We travel for days. We soon begin to quieten down, knowing pretty well that it is of no use. We realize that we are a captive now. We do not have the cash and money to buy us out as we did back then on earth. We begin to take in the surroundings. We begin to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds. We then suddenly realize that we have been passing through here before, not once but several times. It suddenly dawns on us that we are being brought to be judged. We remember and recall the large screen that is going to display our life's work for all to see. Already shame starts to set in as we start to recollect our life's work. It is written all over us. We cannot possibly hide anything anymore. We stand stark naked before the assembly of the wise that awaits us. We stand with our heads held low waiting for the show to begin. Guilt and shame build up in us. After the show is over the reviews come in from the members of the assembly and others, some of whom we recognize. Some are harsh to us while others seem to ask to be lenient on us and give us leeway and another opportunity. The verdict is given. There is no space or moment to appeal. The next moment we plunge into the darkness. Soon we sense and feel that there is some light and some mumbled voices. We know that we are close to man and his kind again. We begin to work on ourselves preparing another dwelling to house us. All that was said at the assembly is fresh in us. Days go by. Months go by. Then we find ourselves ejected out of a capsule into the world. We are back. As days go by we begin to lose the memory of all that was said to us in the assembly. We lose ourselves again to the world. We get caught with its antics and mischiefs. Then something happens that makes us regain an inkling of the memory of our true Self. It is vague but there waiting to be discovered. We find ourselves in the second scenario now. We are searching for the way back home. We are promised the promised land of milk and honey, God's kingdom, and begin our quest to reach it. We are pointed to several paths to arrive there, each pioneer claiming that the path they showed us would bring us there. We begin the journey at the expense of sacrificing time and money and leaving family and kin. But there is no sight of the promised land as yet. Days have gone by. Months have gone by. Years have gone by. But there is still no sign of God as promised. We feel lost. We are lost for direction. We are lost for a guide who has been there. Thoughts ring in our minds. Were all these hearsay by others that we chose to believe and follow and tracked up till now? Have we been conned? Have we been deceived? But there was something in us that drove us to investigate our Self in the very first place, right? That cannot be a lie, right? That cannot be false, right? We look towards the skies now for guidance hoping a star among the many shall shower its love and compassion and come to lead us to God's kingdom. We pray even harder. No one comes. No one appears. Should I wait longer for a sign?

Then the unexpected happens. A star shines extremely bright in the skies. We recognize it. We follow it. We come upon a dwelling in the woods. A frail old man is sitting in the shadows of the fire he has lit. There is a faint sound of chanting, something unheard of. We move closer to him to have a clear view of him. He invites us to take a seat. He seems to know us. He runs through the past, present, and future that awaits us. He enlightens us. We begin to learn our purpose in coming here. He bids us farewell telling us that we have all his grace, love, and compassion. We track back home to start life anew. We make headway fast with his grace. The lure of the world loses its hold on us as time goes by. We have aged too in the meantime. There is no more responsibility or work on hand. Satisfaction fills us up. We carry love and compassion. We settle for completeness. We sit still. We do nothing. We become in the image of that frail old man whom we met in the woods.

One day someone steps before us as we sit outside our home lighting a fire. We seem to know him. We invite him to take a seat. We run through his past, present, and future. We bid him farewell telling him that we are only one call away from him. He moves out of our sight but he lives in our hearts.

*This is a work of fiction laced with some true happenings.*

YOGA

My father-in-law, 87 now, who was 83 back then, was asked to do the Yoga pose Surya Namaskar by Agathiyar. He had me show it to him. Even I doubted if he could do it at his age and wondered why Agathiyar wanted to put him through this regime. True enough the man gave up just minutes into it. I left it at that. Each morning he continues to walk in his courtyard, pray to the sun, and worship all the deities though. But I have come to believe that with self-confidence and confidence in Agathiyar's words, one can start yoga even when in old age. I guess Agathiyar has faith in us but we do not.

You tend to feel at a loss when you cannot do all the things you did once upon a time. This is what we have come to know about my mother-in-law's feelings. She laments that she cannot do anything, even to serve us when we visit her as she is ill now. It is time she learned to let go and live in the moment, savoring even the pain and agony. We can never go back to the past except in our memories. She has to learn to forgive others and forgive herself too to move on. Each one of us is put on the face of the earth to experience and learn from these experiences and in return teach another. At the end of the day, it is how much we have learned and how much we have given in return.

The youths who turned up at my home to watch and participate in the puja my family and I did, after they were directed by Agathiyar in their Nadi beginning in 2013, were asked to be taught Yoga Asanas and Pranayama in 2021. Agathiyar came and monitored their progress, often pushing them to do it. While a handful followed diligently, understanding the importance of Yoga to advance spiritually, many others ignored doing it. One thing was apparent from all this. They lacked discipline. I guess my career as a civilian with the military forces helped inculcate obedience and openness to taking orders and imbibed discipline in me. It has helped me throughout my journey, for this journey with the Siddhas is one of listening and following too.

THE GURU

One can go on and on asking questions thinking that he shall be enlightened. The other would vomit all that he or she had read or heard or digested from both. It would make him look intellectual and studious. But he is nowhere near the truth. The truth is rather simple and pretty near. But Maya creates an illusion of layers and distance that shifts the truth farther and farther from us. I guess this is why Lord Siva came into my dream telling me to keep my doubts and questions to another moment back then when I was loaded to the brim on the verge of exploding.

Just as Srinath Raghavan posted the following on FB, we are living in a bubble. The secrets are not in the pages of the sacred texts or books but at the feet of the guru, one who has walked the path and experienced it.

We all live in a personal bubble of our own,
A bubble which is highly colorful but opaque,
So nothing outside it's purview is ever seen by us,
We live and die our life, inside this fantastic bubble,
Thinking and believing whatever in it is the only truth,
Nothing outside can ever exist and it should not too,
We can very well break it's brittle wall from inside,
But we choose not to, for the fear of being exposed to uncertainty,
When with the touch of the Master from outside, the bubble breaks,
That's when we will finally realize, how foolish and limited we were,
To have accepted the truth that's known to us, as the Final Truth...
~ Freedom is breaking the bubble and seeing and feeling the reality beyond your own.

With the touch of the Master from outside, the bubble breaks, and reality dawns. If Bhagawan Ramana Maharishi says, "... the spiritual energy of a master transforms the consciousness of men", Swami Muktananda mentions in his book ‘SECRET OF THE SIDDHAS’, Siddha Yoga Publication, 1980, that his master gave him one word that completely transformed him. Muktananda says,

"That word (Guru Om), which I received after so many years, spread through my body from head to toe like wildfire carried by the wind. It produced in me both inner heat and the coolness of joy. Before meeting my guru I had practiced many different kinds of yoga, but it was I who had practiced them. However, that word activated a spontaneous yoga within me. I was filled with amazement."

He says everything - postures, Mudras, and breathing processes - all happened on their own. He became ecstatic.

This is the reason one soughts out an initiation from a proper and genuine guru. It would be even better if the divine brought us to him, as I arrived in Tiruvannamalai at Supramnia Swami's feet, or the divine brought him to us, as with Tavayogi reaching our shores, rather than we go searching for one and become disappointed. Prapanjam is never wrong. If Supramania Swami left behind the merits of his 40 years of austerities to me, Agathiyar tells me that Tavayogi left me his very nature or Guru Tanmai. These helped transform me I believe with minimum effort on my part. It skyrocketed me to where I am today. I am indebted to my gurus. What else could a growing student expect from his master's?

When I took heed of the call from Agathiyar to come to the path and worshipped him and the Siddhas beside the pantheon of Hindu Gods and Goddesses and followed all his advice, dictates, instructions, tasks, and practices given, coming as updates through the Nadi and later through his devotees, an internal transformation began flowering in me without my knowledge. This culminated in the river bursting its banks. A spontaneous flow of energy traveled to higher Chakras reaching the crown Chakra within days. There the dance began and goes on till this moment even as I pen these words at 4 in the morning.

Swami Muktananda continues explaining the transformation, something I am going through.

After the awakening of the Shakti, this process of yogic movements began to take place within my entire body. The pulsation of his ecstasy pervades my entire body like the movement of the wind. The Kriyas were his, the yoga was his, and meditation took place because of him. The final message that I received was from him. The power of his word permeates each of my blood cells; the fluids of my entire body are his. That is why I am joyful. Gurudev entered me and replaced all my bodily fluids with his. He evicted me and took up residence in me. He annihilated my ego. By making my individuality his, he became me. This is the guru’s compassion. Only when I lost myself in the ecstasy of Bhagawan Nithyananda did I realize who he was.

He adds "Only the guru can know that delight and taste the elixir that arises in every pore of the body", which Ramalinga Adigal too mentions.

Just as a seeker yearns for a guru to lead him, a guru looks out for a seeker whom he can groom to realize all that he saw and felt too. But just as gurus are rare to come by so are the students.

When Ramakrishna met Naren, who later came to be known as Swami Vivekananda, for the very first time, he told him, "My ears are nearly burnt off listening to the talk of these worldly people. I thought I would burst not having anyone to tell how I really felt!"1

Today Agathiyar tells me the same. He laments about "listening to the talk of these worldly people too." People think that by coming to the Siddhas they shall save them and keep them safe, solve their problems and troubles, dish out goodies, and fulfill their dreams. Though the Siddha is known to do all these, their prime purpose and role in coming to us is to make us another Siddha. But sadly no one wants to become a Siddha. They would rather stay under their shadows, serve them, pray to them, and wait for their blessings and grace forever. No one wants to step into the shoes or rather sandals of a Siddha.

Just as "An ocean current is a continuous, directed movement of seawater generated by a number of forces acting upon the water"2 we too are subjected to the Tattvas and its nature. Knowing them and tackling them by not responding to their wants, we settle in the bliss of silence. The guru brings us to know and be this silence, thus returning back to the source.

The first encounters of gurus with their masters had always amazed me. These precious and prized moments where the guru identifies the disciple and the disciple accepts the teachings of the guru are always exciting to read again and again. I have compiled these sacred moments when the master meets the disciple and vice versa in a book entitled ‘FIRST ENCOUNTERS WITH THE MASTERS’. Read further at

THE GRACE OF THE GURU

I wrote in an earlier post "Having seen the many possible meanings to the instruction given to me by Agathiyar and Lord Murugan to do nothing and just be, "Summa Iru" in a previous post at Siddha Heartbeat: BE QUIET (SUMMA IRU) (agathiyarvanam.blogspot.com) so what do I do now?" Do I just sit? Do I sit still? Can I get up to have my food? Can I take a walk? Can I read a book? Can I blog? Can I watch something? Should I shut my eyes and ears? Can I speak? Can I have visitors over? Or can I go over to their place?

It is said that as long as there was a question-answer session none of Lord Dakshinamurti's four students attained Gnanam. It was only when he kept his silence that Gnanam dawned on them. In "Sri Ramana Darsanam" by Sadhu Natanananda, published by Sri Ramanasramam, 2002, we read that first among Lord Siva's human forms was that of Sri Dakshinamurthi, the primal guru. Bhagawan Ramana who came later is said to "indicate through his silence that the state of Mauna is the aim of human birth."

This is truly earth-shattering for we are told to take up an ambition, a must in everybody's life walking the material plane. Later walking the spiritual plane, we are told to find our purpose here. Now Bhagawan shatters all these telling us that the aim of human birth is to arrive at the state of Mauna(m).

Doing nothing. I see the picture now. I understand why Agathiyar and Tavayogi had me carry out all the dictates and tasks they gave me stage by stage, leading me through the numerous phases, and finally, Agathiyar had me drop all and go within. Today he and Lord Muruga ask me to do nothing, "Summa Iru".

In doing nothing silence prevails, both in speech and thought. In silence, we arrive at achieving our purpose here. This is the biggest blow that they could give me, going by the many blows I received at each step I took. All these blows were to wake me up from my deep slumber, the sleep of ignorance. It was to pull me out in the nick of time before I drowned in the waters of the very actions and activities that they had me start for want of those experiences and a learning.

Bhagawan Ramana who "remained in the meditative state of Self-abidance", tells us "This state cannot be described except by silence. Remaining still, having realized the truth as it is, is the Guru's grace." No wonder Agathiyar told us that Gnanam was not gifted nor to expect to be spoon-fed but one has to experience it traveling each Chakra within oneself to arrive at this realization.

When Bhagawan pointed out that the cow Lakshmi was in "Nirvikalpa Samadhi", I wonder what states my grandchildren enter without effort amid all the activity and play.

Agathiyar had mapped out a mandate and purpose for mankind in coming to the Tamil Sangam in the past. Giving mankind the five tenets that lead one to know his purpose here, we mistook it to be some form of action and the fruits of these actions that we left for mankind. There seems to be a higher purpose in coming here. The truth is that there is nothing to achieve nor to leave behind except to realize the silence within. This is only made known to us after we had done the day's work and not any sooner. This is like Donkey asking Shrek "Are we there yet?" at each juncture. We think this is it. We have arrived. But it appears to be another mirage. Then we ask if this is it again. It is yet another mirage. I guess this is what is referred to as the world being a handiwork of Maya. The grace or Arul of the guru has brought us to know this truth. This realization is impossible without the grace of the guru. The guru has brought us this far. Now the ball is in our court.

CHARITY

My late father was a philanthropist. His Chettiar clan was known to build and manage temples without seeking donations outside of the clan. They did manage their temples well both in India and Malaysia. When the Japanese invaded the shores of Malaya the same day Pearl Harbour was bombed and drove the British to Singapore, he merely missed the bullets by inches when he was stepping out of the bank with two bags of currencies in his hands. The continuous array of machine gun bullets from a plane above made him hit the dirt. He survived to tell his tale. He dropped his hold on money and property after the surrender of Malaya back to the British. Like Saint Pattinathar, he began giving away a car, the shophouses, and other properties he had owned. The family eventually began renting. But we never went hungry though. We had a good main meal and finished the leftovers at night. He left for India. I was nine then. We understood that he stayed in an ashram serving a guru. The guru then told him one day that he had responsibilities back at home and told him to see to it. His parting words were that they shall meet again if the divine wills. I never knew who that master was. After he returned, he served as a priest in a temple in Ulu Tiram before he was forced to return home when he had a stroke. He recovered after daily pushing himself to keep writing. He passed away peacefully at the age of 76 in 1991. Knowing his end was near he exceptionally, called for a cup of coffee, which he always made himself. By the time my mother came with it, he was seen sitting in a corner of the house, and his pupils were locked in a gaze. Fearing something abnormal, my mother placed her hand on his shoulder. He collapsed onto her lap. He passed away.

I guess there was this stigma that we ended up poor due to his generosity towards others that had us keep to ourselves and never donate. When I read the Nadi in 2002, Agathiyar had me donate towards temples and others in the disguise of remedies and doing Paraikaram. I began to give starting with the Naadikku Dhaanam or a small contribution towards the Nadi that Agathiyar directed I give and that goes to the reader. It was also to pay homage to the Siddhas for documenting our past, present, and future.

Next, when I stepped into the Kallar ashram in 2005, Tavayogi suggested that we carry out feeding the locals and the natives who had pitched their huts next to the ashram. As Deepavali was around the corner, Tavayogi, Mataji and I shopped for new items of clothing for the children. With the coming of the many youths whom Agathiyar sent over to my home after their respective Nadi readings, we began to entertain them and other devotees serving all food and delicacies. Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia (AVM) came to be formed followed by its feeding arm, Amudha Surabhi (AS). These youths who initially were from Thondu Seivom (TS) carried out the charity programs concurrently. Agathiyar initially had us take over from a devotee who was tasked to hand out food and groceries to families on 8 Ammavasai or the nights when the moon does not show itself. Once the number was met she stopped giving. Agathiyar had us take up the cause. That is how we began to visit these homes of the poor and unfortunate and distribute cooked food and groceries. When we got to know Pothigai Tharma Chakram (PTC) who gave food to those on the streets, we joined them in street feeding. When we held puja in temples and lighted 1008 and 108 oil lamps we fed all the devotees too, immaterial of whether they were rich or poor. Agathiyar initially to get us started on the habit of giving willingly drew no boundary between caste, race, and economic standings. We gave to one and all. Soon after when compassion blossomed from our hearts, he educated us to look out for the extreme poor and suffering. We began to focus on these few. In 2019, he had us drop everything telling us that others would continue from where we left. True enough PTC took over the tasks. Devotees at AVM were asked to go within. After the pandemic, Agathiyar had them take up Yoga. This Sunday will see the revival of AVM under the leadership of Mahindren. One wonders what is in store on this next leg of the journey?

Though we had stopped doing charity as a group, I continued doing my part whenever I came across individuals who were hungry or suffering. This morning I was shown another lesson as the event unfolded before me. There was this sweeper engaged by the council's contractor, much older than me, whom I would buy food when I went for my breakfast after my morning walk. Then there was another man much younger than me who was an assistant to a lorry driver. If the former had a home to return to staying with his daughter and grandchild, the latter was a bachelor and slept in the park and corridors of the shop houses. As I walked over to the restaurant I met them both and we exchanged greetings. I thought I would pack them breakfast. Handing it over to the sweeper he told me to leave it in his cart. I saw there was already a drink and food in it. Pointing this out to him, he acknowledged that he had food and he told me to leave mine there. Moving on to the other man happily sitting in the park, shaking his legs, I asked him if he had had his breakfast. He answered he did. I told him I had bought him too. He then told me to give it to another. I was shown to give what was in excess to another and not keep it to ourselves.

This reminds me of another encounter I had some time back. As I came down the pedestrian crossing in the city a grandma in a wheelchair extended her hands. I gave her some money. When I returned there was a mother with an infant in her hands sitting next to her. I told the grandma why don't you do your part and hand her some of your takings for the day for your needs are little compared to one with a child. She immediately retaliated telling me that she was "earning" more than her. I walked away in disgust.

GETTING CLARITY

While having my morning and evening walks I used to see groups of enthusiastic people concerned about their health, gather and carry out all forms of exercises, be it modern-day aerobics, ancient Chinese art forms, like gazing at the trees and hugging them, meditating, and individuals running, walking and the elderly going about with those slow movements and exercises. I have also seen a group of young children picking up the Indian art form of self-defense, Silambam. What captured my attention was seeing older youngsters teaching the younger ones.

Today as I came around the field I saw a group of youths playing the traditional Indian music Tappu Melam. I had to stop to film them. Learning by listening to the music played by others, they started their own small team naming it the "Sri Maha Kaliamman Karupar Tappu Melam".

I remember back then when my wife's parents arranged for an Annadhanam at the Kanthan Kallumalai Sri Kaliamman temple in Chemor, Perak. A Yagam was done followed by puja and feeding. It was a temple tugged in a cave amidst the serenity of nature.

But the tranquility and serenity were replaced when the temple saw a festival, as we edged our way through the road that had so many cars parked on both sides to carry out the Homam that Agathiyar had summoned us to do last Sunday at my wife's parent's home. I had never seen such a large turnout of devotees at a temple festival for what is commonly known as "Lesser Gods or Goddesses", "Lesser Deities" or "Siru Deivam" except for the annual event held for Muniandysamy in Jalan Baru, Prai. Since we were staying in the vicinity of the temple we saw the huge numbers of devotees coming from all over the country. After that, I got to see this equally large turnout at the Kanthan Kaliamman temple festival.

While the large temples had the patronage of the kings of the past, the smaller shrines were family-owned shrines and village shrines that were at the mercy of these families and villagers. Hence they never became famous except among the locals staying there. On the local front, many of these deities' temples and shrines can be found in estates where there was a large following. But with social media and transportation available these days, these lesser-known temples of "Lesser Deities" are making waves in the realm of Bakthi with waves of devotees frequenting them.

My wife's parents were directed earlier to continue the worship of Madurai Veeran, whom their ancestors had worshipped in the past but were discontinued as everyone had left their hometown to pursue jobs and take on new careers in other cities. They were asked to place the deity's picture on an altar on the porch and light oil lamps. They were visited by the deity Karupanasamy last evening. Karupanasamy is known to be present in places where Siddhas had their abodes. He was sort of the guardian angel for both Siddhas and devotees alike.

When Agathiyar came to conduct the Homam in my wife's parent's house on Sunday and ushered his guru Lord Muruga, he covered the main points. Before Agathiyar started the Homam he instructed my wife to light the lamp for Muniandisamy. Yesterday as it was a full moon, a puja was done for him with offerings. Karupanasamy or Karupar as he is lovingly called came instead and addressed my wife's family through a devotee. He filled in whatever Lord Muruga left out.

Speaking to Mahindren this morning about this, we were amazed at the network and cooperation that existed among the Gods. Ramalinga Adigal whom his present-day followers say had shunned the worship of these "Lesser Deities" surprised us when he redirected a devotee who faced resistance in his career to Karupanasamy for a solution some time back.

I had grown up seeing worship to these deities. Though I would stand back for fear of being whipped or scolded as I had seen some get it, I would indulge in eating the meat of the sacrificed animal. Later I told them let us go our way and not cross paths, after seeing their closest devotees going through much suffering. Lord Siva came in a dream and told me to keep aside all my anger, doubts, and questions. This was the beginning of my 14-year self-exile staying away from all forms of puja, be it home or temple, and all reading of books on the Agamas and religion. But after learning from Agathiyar that it was all Karma that was in play, I could accept and return to the fold. Agathiyar in wanting to show me that it was all his creation too, brought these deities and addressed them at AVM. I learned to accept them into the fold again. Soon these deities came forward with messages that saved the day for us. The moment they sense trouble in the neighborhood they rush to our sides to cover us. That is the nature of these deities.

In having just a short morning conversation with Mahindren over the phone this morning, a profound truth came into the open. Science can evolve because we accept changes. What was once believed that the earth was a square is no more the truth. Space journeys have proven that it is a globe. Religion and spiritual practices on the other hand are buried in time. We are not willing to accept newer understandings. As man's mind develops his understanding of these spiritual texts and practices too should evolve with time just as science evolves. We are not willing to drop the earlier understanding of religious practices and spiritual understandings. Only when we come out of this Maya that envelops us do we see it all in a new light and begin to accept them. This is accentuated further if we have those experiences too. Then no one can say we are wrong for we have walked the path and experienced and learned from these experiences.

HAPPINESS

I have yet to come across a happy man these days. A neighbor whose wife passed away remarried but he is not happy in the relationship. Several newlyweds we know of have divorced. Many are not happy with their careers. Then some are bugged with health problems and, hence are losing their peace of mind. These are some of the people we know. Then many happenings all around the world are brought to us through news media and social media that cause distress and sadness in us. Where does happiness lie? It looks like we are looking for happiness with a partner, friend, family, job, career, food, drinks, etc. When we lose a job, a life partner, a family member, a friend, a pet, money, property, or anything else, our whole world crumbles. Are we then dependent on others for our happiness?

What about those who lose themselves and their identities and roam the streets indifferent to what is happening around them, sleeping on walkways and corridors, picking food from trash cans? They seem to be not disturbed in any way.

What about the children in their own world laughing and shouting and indifferent to what is happening until we enter their space?

What about the sages and saints keeping to themselves and in their own world. They seem to be in a state of bliss.

Acceptance of all moments and happenings brings us happiness. Contentment and not comparing with another brings us happiness. Good health brings happiness. Coming under the wings of the Siddhas brings us happiness. All this applies to the common man and a sane adult. So where do happiness and bliss reside? For the materialistic man, happiness is only found in the company of others and in the world he creates with money and wealth. They live in the past, present, and future. For the man who has turned cuckoo, happiness, and sadness are something entirely alien to him, I guess. He has no idea about his past, the present, and his future. For the child, happiness is in the moment with whatever is in his or her hand. They live in the moment. For the man who has shed all things material, happiness is found within. There is no time-space in his vocabulary.

THE PRESENT

Having seen the many possible meanings to the instruction given to me by Agathiyar and Lord Murugan to do nothing and just be, "Summa Iru" in a previous post at Siddha Heartbeat: BE QUIET (SUMMA IRU) (agathiyarvanam.blogspot.com) so what do I do now?

Nothing. I have to patiently await the experience of the Self or Atma to unfold. Meanwhile, since there are no Sariyai except for an occasional visit to the temple with my grandchildren; no Kriyai except when called for; no Yoga except to check on the breath and its flow regularly; and the occasional discourses on Gnanam that Agathiyar comes to give us, my daily routine is taking a walk in the morning and evening to keep myself fit and taking in the sunshine, the breeze, the aroma, the sounds of the outdoors. When a certain subject comes to my mind I immediately take notes and expand on it later. These make their way to my readers as posts in my blog. As for YouTube videos, as and when there are events that call for taking of footage, they too make their way to my viewers.

I guess Agathiyar and Lord Murugan want me to be in the present moment each moment, hence their repeated reminder to do nothing. They caution me not to lose my temper too for that would sabotage all the work and effort that they put in me all these while. Distancing and staying away from people and events, news, and social media, might help reduce the situations where I could lose my cool. Rather than control my anger and temper, I guess what they want me to do is to learn to laugh it off in all those situations and move on. It shall be tough but it has to be done.

THE VEIL

Radhanath Swami in telling the story of Narada and his disciple in his book "The Journey Within", Mandala Publishing, 2016, writes, "Narada loved his disciple but sometimes love requires firm action."

The story is an interesting read. It goes as follows.

Narada had a disciple named Kailash. When he told him to take his spiritual life more seriously as time was passing quickly, the latter replied, "Sure, once I am finished with my studies first." Narada left. Several years later, he returned and reminded him again. His disciple replied that as he had just got married and started a business, he needed some time. Narada left. A few years later he replied he had children to care for. On his next visit, Narada was told that there were his grandchildren that he had to care for too. When Narada returned later the news of the death of Kailash awaited him. As Narada walked away disappointed that he had failed to help his disciple, a dog barked at him. It was Kailash. Narada tells him though he was a dog now that it was not too late. Kailash replies that he had to guard the family estates. When Narada returns later to find that the dog has died, he hears his disciple's voice in the tall grass. He was now a snake. He tells Narada that he has to protect the crops from predators. As they say, there is always the last straw that breaks the camel's back, Narada knocked on the door of the family home and told them there was a snake in the grass. The villagers gathered around and beat it up. Kailash cries out that he will come.

Radhanath Swami writes, "Death doesn't care if you have finished everything. When your times up, you have to move on."

There is a similar story told by Dharmalinga Swami of Kollimalai who moved to Tiruvannamalai later, in an audio of his, of a potential, soon-to-be disciple, identified and approached by a Siddha asking if he was ready to leave all behind and follow him. He gave the reason that his mother wished to see him married. The Siddha left. Once married he told the Siddha that his mother wanted to see her grandchild. The Siddha left. The Siddha came again to the man in his mid-life. The man told the Siddha that he had a responsibility to get his child married off. The Siddha left to return many years later. This time before the man could give more reasons not to follow him, the Siddha asked for some fresh coconut to quench his thirst. When the man was up the tree the Siddha shouted out "Stop!" and asked him whether he was holding on to the branch or the branch was holding on to him? Immediately the man realized the truth of the statement and how foolishly he had held on to the material world. He left with the Siddha that instant.

Just to make this point clear Agathiyar had us carry out our 6oth wedding telling us later that it was to acknowledge that we had to move on to another phase, and to the children he asked that they let us go.

Just as the Siddha comes by to remind us of our responsibility to their cause too, and lead us on various practices, techniques, mantras, meditation, etc, the Siddhas could come along in many forms to stop, halt, or divert us to another platform as they see deemed fit for our soul to progress. Supramania Swami, who had just begun the groundwork to start a temple was stopped by a stranger questioning him why he took a step back into Bhakti? If Tavayogi started me on the practice of Asanas and Pranayama, praised by Agathiyar as a treasure and equating it to a treasure-house, Agathiyar came later to stop me from furthering the practice. When it was seen and deemed to have served its purpose, in opening the chakras and energizing them he made known that further practice would only accentuate the pain I was undergoing then. The masters come along to break our dependence on things too. They come along to break a routine for spiritual evolvement means moving on to new frontiers. Hence the need to move away from tried methods and procedures that were initiated in the very first place, even if it was by the Siddhas.

A story is told in "I Am That", Syda Foundation, 1978 by Swami Muktananda of how Ashtavakra helped King Janaka drop a practice. Janaka who was initiated into mantra Japa or repetition of a mantra used to practice it on a nearby riverbank daily. As Ashtavakra came along one day, he could not help but notice the king chant the mantra at the top of his voice. Ashtavakra who knew that King Janaka, who was known as "a Videhi Janaka, the one who had gone beyond body consciousness, and who ruled his kingdom from the state beyond identification with the body, wondered why Janaka was repeating the mantra in this manner. Ashtavakra watched Janaka for a while, wondering how he should instruct him."

He sat beside the king with his water bowl and Yoga Danda and began to chant loudly, "This is my water bowl, this is my Yoga Danda", repeating it loudly to the annoyance of the king. The king chanted his mantra even louder. Now Ashtavakra raised his voice further. After a while, the king opened his eyes and looked towards Ashtavakra asking him angrily what he was doing? Ashtavakra asked him in return, "What are you doing?" The king replied that he was repeating a mantra. Ashtavakra said he was repeating a mantra too. The king apprehended him asking, "Are you mad. Who told you the bowl and Yoga Danda were not yours? Why do you need to keep shouting that it belongs to you?

Ashtavakra replied to the king, "It seems to me that you are the one who lacks understanding. Who told you that you are not That? Why do you have to go on shouting that you are That?

We too tend to carry on doing what was given throughout our lives not realizing that these methods and techniques are mere tools given to practice and benefit at that moment in time, or at that phase, stage, or state. Hence we understand the reasons Agathiyar and Tavayogi have us move on to the next phase after completing the previous one. Indeed Agathiyar too has been harsh and came down hard on us several times for stalling away and delaying the tasks given, all because he loves us. When Maya envelops us we fail to see our true Self. When are we going to wake up from this deep slumber that has come over us as a dark cloud that envelops our consciousness and prevents us from seeing the light beyond?

IT IS ALL ABOUT LETTING GO

The very first thing Tavayogi did the moment he landed on our soil in 2005, seeing throngs of devotees visiting temples, he told us to come out of Bhakti into Gnanam. Just before leaving, he had me drop my hold on him even before it could develop fully. Tavayogi had me drop my hold on amulets and rings that I wore on me saying, "We do not need these, my son" when I went over to his ashram a month after his departure. Returning home he initiated me to conduct the ritual of lighting the fire or Homam in 2005, a smaller scale of the Yagam that he did on his temple grounds. I was reluctant initially, but yet I did it. Agathiyar came later in the Nadi to reinforce the need saying that I was not doing it for myself but for the continued sustenance of the Prapanjam. In later years, Agathiyar tells us to come out of it too, unless it calls for us to take it up again. The call came when the pandemic started. Lord Siva told us to do it. Prapanjam herself asked us to do it when she foresaw the deadly virus re-emerging later. We did as told.

Tavayogi taught me and several others Yoga Asanas and Pranayama on his subsequent visit in 2007. Agathiyar had me stop doing them in 2012 when the Muldhara Chakra that was activated without my knowledge in 2010 resulted in excruciating pain in my lower back.

Agathiyar on his part had me commission his bronze statue in Swamimalai and bring it over on 2 January 2010. That was the day the seed was planted for Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia (AVM) that germinated with the coming of several youths in 2013, whom he sent over after their respective Nadi readings. He was to go over to the Raghavendra Brindavanam but Agathiyar stayed put eventually.

Tavayogi who asked me to see my Gnana Kaandam on our first meeting in 2005, and read the Jeeva Nadi in his possession on his last visit to Malaysia in 2016, told us to come out of our dependence on the Nadi too. All these are initial tools while traveling the path. Do not carry it with you. It is all about letting go.

Agathiyar then closed the doors to Puja and its associated rituals and with it further gatherings at AVM in the wake of the pandemic in 2019. He wanted me and others to let go of whatever attachment that I might have towards this group and its activities. Subsequently, he had me connect with my body and breath asking me to start back the Asanas and Pranayama practices I learned from Tavayogi in 2007 which he had me halt in 2012. I did as told. Recently he wanted to revive AVM and agreed to the appointment of Mahindren to lead the group. Citing my age, he told me he was not going to give me any further tasks.

In 2023 he had me part with his statue too by having me hand it over to another devotee. I did as told. Agathiyar eventually told me to let go of him too. He wanted to bring me from Dvaita to Advaita. A year later he comes back bringing a company with him, a statue of Lobama too.

These days he asked that I do nothing. So what do you do after letting go? Nothing. That was what Agathiyar and Lord Murugan tell me these days. After having me quieten my mind and still the thoughts by being alone and in solitude in the years following the emergence of the pandemic, this helped the dormant energies in the seat of the Muladhara Chakra, which unknowingly became activated with the Yogic practice given by Tavayogi in 2007, to pool in Manipuraka. Agathiyar then breaks its bunds and has it travel up through the remaining Chakras in 2022 and to the Sahasrara Chakra within days. He asked that I do nothing further and let these energies do their work. I am told to stay quiet, "Summa Iru".

Carrying out our 60th wedding, he wants me and my wife to enter the next phase, that of knowing our souls.

In QUIET MIND, FEARLESS HEART - THE TAOIST PATH THROUGH STRESS & SPIRITUALITY, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Hoboken, New Jersey, 2005, Brian Luke Seaward quotes Teilhard De Chardin (Seaward B. L., 2005),

“We are not humans having a spiritual experience. Instead, we are spirits having a human experience. …..earthly existence is enshrouded in many veils of illusion. It is a brave soul on a noble adventure who attempts to lift these veils. .... If you recognize that you are indeed a spirit on a human path, then every situation that you encounter will be a learning experience. This is how consciousness evolves. The drive that inspires the human journey is a desire to have this view of life - a clearer understanding of life’s mystery and role or purpose in it.”

Shantideva says he who longs for him knows him.

“The self is not known through the study of the scriptures, or through the subtlest intellect, or through much learning; but he who longs for him knows him. He makes us dead to our own existence and alive to his own.”

He says, “God appears when the ego dies.” The death of Anavam, which after Kanmam and Maayai, is the third and final of the three Malams or Impurities, brings us to Advaita, a state of no separation but only oneness in all manner. This is the death of Maya in its totality.

In handing over the tasks of reviving AVM to Mahindren who has journeyed long on this path, and have me do nothing he wants me to move up the ladder of spirituality, gain Soul Empowerment, and evolve. The soul that is generally tied down to the three Malams or Impurities, has to shed its baggage of Karma first. It has to learn to differentiate the good, bad, and ugly from experience, and not pick up more Karma. Then it learns to see through the veil of Maya that is constantly changing and all the tricks it has up its sleeves. Once we beat Karma and Maya at their own game, we have to shed or drop Anavam which distinguishes us as separate from everything else.

Now they want my mother-in-law who is ill to let go too. Her soul has to let go of the body that has become fragile and weak with age and illness. Lord Murugan listening to her call, came on Sunday, as Agathiyar carried out a Homam in her home. It was to assist her soul to leave with him without pain, regret, or sadness. It was about letting go too. If some years back, she held back to life, asking Agathiyar to heal her, now she tells Lord Murugan to take her home. Eventually, it is all about letting go.

BE QUIET (SUMMA IRU)

Saint Arunagiri was told "Summa eru Sol Are" to be quiet by Lord Murugan and he sat for 12 long years. Agathiyar and Lord Murugan tell me the same and I cannot even sit for 12 minutes. I guess I will never make it into their good books. Lord Muruga came yesterday to remind me again. What should I do? Nothing. That is what he and Agathiyar have told me numerous times. When he told me this, I wondered how was I to achieve this. As I tried to digest these words he continued, "Is that puzzling?" புதிராக இருக்கிறதா?  and added, "Well go research it"ஆராய்ச்சி செய்.

What happened to Arunagiri when he sat quietly? He too sings that ‘சும்மா இரு சொல்லற என்றலுமே அம்மா பொருள் ஒன்றுமறிந்திலனே..’ that he knows not the meaning of keeping quiet.

We come to know that Saint Pathinathar too was told the same from https://tamilhindu.com

“சும்மா இருக்க வைத்தான் சூத்திரத்தை நானறியேன் அம்மா பொருளிதென அடைய விழுங்கினனடி”

Tayumanavar too was asked to remain such by his guru Mauna Guru, "Be silent. Rest in peace. Keep quiet (Summa Eru). Have faith. You will reach the supreme state of Bliss." The Saint sings the same.

“சும்மா இருக்கும் சுகம் ஒன்றறியேன் பராபரமே”

Stating all the Siddhis that one gains he praises the Lord.

சிந்தையை அடக்கியே சும்மா இருக்கிற
திறமது சத்தாகியென்
சித்தமிசை குடி கொண்ட அறிவான தெய்வமே
தேசோமயானந்தமே!

"(Thayumanavar's) search for a teacher ultimately led him to a man called Arul Nandi Sivachariar, who was also known as ‘Mauna Guru’. This teacher could trace his lineage back to the famous saint Tirumular, whose book, Tirumantiram, written well over a thousand years ago, became one of the canonical works of Saivism. When Thayumanavar approached him and asked if he could become his disciple, Mauna Guru nodded his head, thereby giving his consent. Thayumanavar then asked if he could follow him wherever he went. Mauna Guru responded by telling him ‘Summa iru,’ which can mean ‘Be still,’ ‘Be quiet,’ and also ‘Remain as you are’. This one phrase apparently brought about a major spiritual transformation in Thayumanavar. In later years, when he began to write ecstatic devotional poetry, he frequently mentioned this event, this phrase, and the effect it had on him. He frequently called it ‘the unique word’ in his verses."

Ramalinga Adigal laments about his impatience in reaching this state.

Tavayogi also sought this state where there is only non-participation bliss (Summa Eru). He would sing Ramalinga Adigal's plea to God too at every Sannadhi or holy spot we arrived and sat at.

Saint Nakkirar prayed to Lord Vinayagar to create a state of complete silence whereby the disciple could see Sivam in its completeness, upon merging with and merging in the guru.

We learn that it is to experience the Self by
  • "Just Be".
  • "Cease Thinking"
where the Self abides in itself.
  • "In this state, it is aware of and has an experience of itself to the exclusion of all other things."
  • "This is a state of self-realization Prajnanam which ultimately leads to Jeevanmukti or Kevala Avastha."
  • These are "mystic experiences which one cannot express or explain to others. Nor can they be understood by others unless such others themselves go through such experiences."
We understand that being quiet is not about not speaking but quieting the thoughts. It is a thoughtless state. What then is a thoughtless state? The author https://tamilhindu.com says that only each person's experience can answer this. Dr. S.R. Jayavelu too writes at https://murugan.org/research/jayavelu.htm that it "denotes the highest state of conscious ‘being' which could be understood only as a mystical experience."

We learn that "Full awareness and absolute stillness of mind are very elusive."

Could it also denote "a state of being happy". Is this then "losing oneself in the presence of the Absolute", for each time Agathiyar and Lord Muruga come they keep asking me if I am going through and enjoying the state of happiness that comes with doing nothing and being quiet. சும்மா இருக்கும் சுகத்தை அறிகிறாயா? காண்கிறாயா?

Dr. S.R. Jayavelu writes that "The states of Mauna, Nishtai, Tavam, Santham, and Ananda are all associated with and allied to "Summa Iru". He writes further that,

"The cycle of births and deaths is due to karma classified under ‘sanjita', ‘prarabda' and ‘āgāmya' karmas. But every karma becomes functional only through the medium of the mind and its ancillaries. If, therefore, the mind and its ancillaries are stilled into a state of inaction, karma is rendered functionless. It follows that so long as the mind and its ancillaries are stilled into a state of inaction, karma is rendered functionless. It follows that so long as the mind and its ancillaries remain perfectly still and the soul or self is just aware, that is in the state of ‘asmi' or ‘asi' or ‘Summa Iru' without any reference to Tat' or ‘twain' or ‘aham' or ‘ayam', it is in a karmaless state. In that state it is subject to neither birth nor death. But the moment the soul or self reverts to any other state (even the state of Godhood of which state it is cognizant or aware) it gets bound at once by karma even as the moss on the water surface of a pond quickly covers up the small visible patch of water when a person withdraws his hand. It will be clear that in the state of ‘asi' or ‘summa iru' there can be no death. This is referred to as ‘deathlessness' (immortality) or ‘the great living in deathlessness' or ‘maranamila peruvazhvu' as saint Ramalinga Swami would put it. Tayumanavar, Tirumoolar and many other saints refer to the ‘summa iru' state. Most of the Hindu saints from Tirugnana Sambandhar down to Ramalinga Swamigal have attained suddha avastha and Siva mukti as the prasāda of their ‘here and now' state of ‘Summa Iru'".

Indeed only one's own experience can fully justify these states. Although the word 'Summa iru' uttered by a Guru can bring "immediate and liberating impact on those who are in a highly mature state", Bhagawan Ramana says "conscious deliberate effort is required to attain that mauna state or the state of being quiet", the reason being, "All the age-long vasanas carry the mind outward and turn it to external objects. All such thoughts have to be given up and the mind turned inward. For that, effort is necessary for most people."

Bhagawan Ramana adds that the exception is for those who have placed the necessary effort in their previous life. For them, it is possible to "achieve the Mauna or supreme state indicated by ‘Summa iru’" at once."

Thayumanavar in 1742 withdrew into his hut leaving a message pinned to the outside of the door. The message read (translated) :

Dear friends, Withdraw the mind from the senses and fix it in meditation. Control the thought current. Find out the thought centre and fix yourself there. Then you will be conscious of the divine Self; you will see it dancing in ecstasy. Live in that delight. That delight-consciousness is the God in you. He is in every heart. You need not go anywhere to find Him. Find your own core and feel Him there. Peace, bliss, felicity, health – everything is in you. Trust in the divine in you. Entrust yourself to His Grace. Be as you are. Off with past impressions! He who lives from within an ingathered soul is a real sage, even though he may be a householder. He who allows his mind to wander with the senses is an ignoramus, though he is learned. See as a witness, without the burden of seeing. See the world just as you see a drama. See without attachment. Look within. Look at the inner light unshaken by mental impressions. Then, floods of conscious bliss shall come pouring in and around you from all directions. This is the supreme Knowledge; realize! Aum! Aum.

(Based on "Bhagavan and Thayumanavar" by Robert Butler, T. V. Venkatasubramanian, and David Godman.)

This was his final message.

Devi Amma of Bangalore quotes Bhagawan Ramana as follows,

"Bhagavan would say - “Submit to me and I will strike down the mind.” Or, “Only be still and I will do the rest.”

When the dormant energies in the Muladhara were awakened unknowingly in 2010, as I practiced the Yoga techniques that Tavayogi showed me since 2007, and when these energies pooled and stagnated at the Manipuraka, and were apparently released in 2022, I asked Agathiyar what should I do further or if there were more practices to adopt. He replied the same as Bhagawan said - Do nothing. It shall do its work.

And he has been telling me not to let my guard down on anger as the energies currently assembled at the crown of the head would head back to lower chakras which would be a wasted effort as he had put in so much work into it.

SIDDHA PUJA RENEWED

For most of us, we have come to substitute temple worship and home worship of the deities with Siddha worship. Siddha worship goes beyond merely bringing our palms together and standing in prayer before their idols or paintings. To worship the Siddha is to eventually become one ourselves. How can one attain the state of a Siddha without doing the practices and following the methods that are given or that we are directed to do? Lord Muruga in coming to us yesterday, told me not to get angry that others are not attempting these practices. He told me not to expect others to do what I did. What did I do? I just listened without question and put in the effort. Telling me that we have jointly traveled far on this path, he is pleased with my accomplishment. Today he tells me that I need no longer do anything.

In the eighties, I studied the books and texts trying to look for God within these pages. I did not find him in it. I took to carrying out home puja to the deities and Gods and Goddesses. I came to know them in the happenings in the lives of friends and relatives. I was saddened and confused. This was the moment Lord Siva stepped in and gave me a break, coming into my dream. He told me to withhold all my questions and doubts to a later date. That day came 14 years later when I saw my Nadi and I could place why those happenings took place. It was each individual's Karma I was told. I was also told of my Karma. I took up the worship of the Siddhas after Agathiyar asked me to come to it in the Nadi reading. I took all available resources and experimented with them. I arrived at a formula that worked out to my advantage. This was when Agathiyar sent Tavayogi to our shores and I met up with him. If Agathiyar asked me to spend a couple of days at Tavayogi's Kallar ashram in India, Tavayogi too extended an open invitation to visit him. I took up the directive and the offer. Tavayogi led me on an excursion of abodes and temples related to the Siddhas, the caves, and the jungles. I did not understand anything he mentioned in passing or showed me then. Nevertheless, I traveled the path with the guidance of both guru and the Siddhas holding Siddha puja in my home that turned into Agathiyar Vanam Malaysia (AVM). But as I had to step out of Sariyai, Kriyai, and Yogam into Gnanam, he had me wind up my association with others and AVM saw a closure. During the years that followed, he monitored me and the energies that he activated to run through my body. Today having seen and experienced the touch of the Siddhas in our lives, all their teachings come alive.

In an effort to reinstate Agathiyar Vanam, Mahindren has come forward to move and bring together these devotees to higher states in Bakti and devotion and Yogam. After a long break, he and his family shall play host to the Siddha puja on 22 September. Both Lord Muruga and Agathiyar remind me again that I had done my share and part and I have to step aside for new and fresh blood to be injected into the existing network of devotees.

SEE NOT, HEAR NOT, SPEAK NOT, DO NOT

When animals and nature can adapt beautifully to the drastic and often disastrous changes taking place, or migrate elsewhere, why can't man? He is so hooked on his choice of food and pleasures. He even corrupts the deities he worships by offering what he eats. He extends his likes and dislikes to his deity too. Rather than becoming in the image of his deity taking on the purity in thoughts and deeds, satisfaction and completeness, he transfers his nature into the idol and worships him or her. The idol and the deity become an extension of him now. But some are moving in a positive direction where many temples dedicated to what is commonly categorized as "Siru Deivam" or Lesser Deities that previously served meat are switching to vegetarian dishes. Agathiyar and these Gods have relayed their wish to see man stop these sacrifices in the name of God. God does not demand meat. Neither does he want our body, which is basically a huge lump of meat too, unless to carry out his bidding and tasks. He only wants to guide our souls to return home, not after we pass away but while living. The merger with him has to happen in this body itself.

The Siddhas had instead devised an alternative means to sacrifice and offerings. They used the element of fire as in Homam and Yagam to conduct these offerings to the deities and Gods. The wood, herbs, etc derived from the elements of earth and water are offered in the fire. It then is carried across through the medium of air and to higher regions of the sphere.

I returned home with my daughters after facilitating Agathiyar and the Siddhas to carry out a Homam at my in-laws' home yesterday. We were tasked to bring along the Homa Kundam and firewood and items that go into the sacrificial fire as offerings. That was all. Agathiyar came to conduct the ritual through a devotee who was tasked to see to this ritual. He asked my wife to light a lamp for the lesser deity that my in-laws were asked to worship some time back, after a long lapse. The generations before them had apparently worshipped them. It was amazing that beginning with a song that was familiar to us, Agathiyar sang another that was unheard of. If only I had a photographic memory I would reproduce this song. But though we heard and understood it it was erased immediately. Asking my daughters to light the Homam he also asked them to ensure that it does not die out. Calling to me he asked that I recite the Arutperunjothi Mantra. He then offered the offerings into the fire speaking to the Gods in Tamil. Though I was keen to know, since I was tasked to recite the mantra, I could not take in the words. Lord Muruga subsequently stepped in and addressed each one of us and our needs.

Coming to my turn, as I stepped before him, he again reminded me to do nothing. He also reminded me not to lose my cool for I shall drop from my present state and shall find it difficult to ascend again. I understood that he now wants me to see not, hear not, speak not, and do not, but only to be aware of the breath. Apparently, this shall not trigger anger and frustration in me that shall pull me down into the dungeon of no return.

THE MANY MANIFESTATIONS OF AGATHIYAR

We are addicted to coffee and tea. We are addicted to liquor. We are addicted to cigarettes. We are addicted to drugs. We are addicted to sex. We are addicted to so many things that start off as something that we try but eventually, it takes hold of us and becomes habitual and our identity. But no one admits that he is addicted to God. That he cannot live without God.

Indeed we cannot live without God. Agathiyar was introduced to us as God by Tavayogi when I met him in Malaysia and as the mantra "Arul Gnana Jothiye, Agathin Jothi. Taniperungkadavule Agatheesar Aavaar" during my first initiation later that evening. But Agathiyar did not remain as God forever. Arriving at his Ashram, he tells me the next day during his morning walk that Agathiyar came to him with a message. When I asked how with bewilderment he answered as the Jothi or Light. Later when he spoke about the statue of Agathiyar that he had placed in the Kallar hills which he had some boys bring us to, he told me that that was the spot where Agathiyar came to him as Light. Now Agathiyar was Light. Traveling with him into the jungles he pointed out to the scents and aroma in the air telling me that the Siddhas were ushering us and looked up towards the skies telling me that the Siddhas were showering us with flower petals. Now Agathiyar and the Siddhas were shown to be in nature and as nature. Stepping down from the steps of the Nattadresswar temple Tavayogi turned to me and said Siva and Agathiyar were one. Now Agathiyar was Lord Siva. Giving me my third initiation before I left his ashram for Malaysia, he told me that Vaasi, or the breath was God. Agathiyar was now the breath.

Then when we began to worship Agathiyar he who was God to us, became a father and a guru. Later he became a companion and now is one in the family. He dines with us. He sleeps with us. He speaks to us. He cries with us. he laughs with us. He is in our breath and every cell. Agathiyar spoke about the importance of the breath. Take heed of the breath and give it its due respect. For without the breath, where are we? Where is the "I"? Where is the ego? Where is the body? Where is the world?

AGATHIYAR ON YOGAM, GNANAM & ATMA

When was the last time you had a good stretch? Yoga Asanas does well to stretch all those aching parts. Though people seem to be well educated on the goodness of Yoga, a balanced diet, exercises, and values in life, they are rather complacent with their current lifestyles. What stops them from stepping into it? Why do we put off doing good things?

Just as a home is nothing without an inhabitant, a body is lifeless without the soul residing in it. The soul is the thing to look up to now as Agathiyar tells me and my wife as we bring closure to the first 60 years of our lives. We have apparently lost touch with our soul and all the rest too in our excitement and delirious chase to appease all else.

It needs the guru who has seen his soul to come along and remind us of this. This is why and what the Siddhas are trying hard to do too. But our sight is on all things except looking within. We give all sorts of reasons to wait another time, to postpone the search within, preferring to look outside, for the external world is brimming full of life, color, and excitement. But just like us who are addicted to all things external, the saints and sages who have tasted the nectar and ambrosia within can never come out of their addiction too. But just as Agathiyar told me that my desire for him too has to be severed, these holy men too eventually give it all up and release their souls willingly.

Death for the body is inevitable be it for a commoner or a Siddha. But the soul continues its journey into another body and yet another, experiencing more and more pain and pleasures that come with life, and eventually finds its way back to the Param from where it arose. Learning about, knowing, and experiencing the soul's journey is Gnanam.

Sadhu Om who was with Bhagawan Ramana brings us Gnanam or Divine Knowledge about life, its purpose, and meanings through his songs. His songs have been set to music and sung by Sriram Parthasarathy and his wife.
